OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread

This is dynamic shaping.

I have not yet contacted OpenWeb support. I first want to see if my issue would be considered a genuine fault or merely the expected behaviour of the OpenWeb Gold product. A few minutes ago, I started an NNTP download which has not yet managed to exceed 40kB/s download. I understand that shaping is normal, but I consider less than 20% of line speed is a little harsh (I have a Openweb uncapped gold 2Mbps account).

Is this a fault or should I go looking for another ISP?

No, this is not an official support forum. We reply on this forum as a measure of goodwill. We do not support clients on here, and if we have, we shouldn't.

Our official support channel is available here:

http://www.openweb.co.za/contact.html

The forum is a good way of sharing ideas, thoughts and product knowledge with each other. Unfortunately it has turned into a complaints forum more than anything else.

what irritates me is the people who cries 'my line just dropped'. only to return 5 minutes later to profess all is well.

Understood. I won't bother logging a fault then.

But log a fault anyway.
Without contacting support and having them check it out, you wouldn't know whether it is in fact shaping. This is my point exactly. MrBEEP can tell you how it works, but it doesn't necessarily pertain to your current situation, you know what I mean?
After checking out your account, support can tell you, whether it's shaping or whether there's a problem. For all you know there is actually a problem with your account.

I'm sorry to harp on about this, but this is a perfect illustration of how not to do this.

Anyways, I'll shut up now. :D

Anyone know what the real difference is between Uncapped Gold (Orange) and the original Uncapped Gold? Other than price.

The difference is the contention ratio.

Gold Original has a lower contention ratio than Orange.

Damn, my line just dropped...
Someone bumped my mirror.. ;-)
Just kidding...
Personally if I experience a problem, I first check this forum to see if it is a general problem of perhaps regional.
Can often be telkom or openweb experiencing a localised or regional problem. Also gives me an idea of trends and statistical anomalies..
In contrast, my pet peeve is guys just popping in to say that everything is fine in the middle of others reporting similar issues. I get why they do it and also the value of a balanced view, just somehow don't factor that in during a troubleshooting session...

I just want yo say, I've been with Openweb for years now. Had issues now and then and they have always been resolved pretty quickly. Big Kudo's to Mr Beep, and the team at Openweb. In my experience they provide one of the best value for money services and support around. This is now an official happy forum. :)

Been dealing with OW support now. Basically, to change my ADSL password I have to give it to somebody via email. They can't let me change it myself via a 'client zone'. They can't lock down my account to a single number, and they tell me that the usage statistics displayed on users.isdsl.net are incorrect.

Does OW not care about client security at all?

Anybody on the Gold Leon 10Mbps account? Experience?

My line got upgraded today, need some advice on good 10Mbps packages.
