Looking for a job ;p ?

1. What is the difference between their Gamer's Bling uncapped accounts and their Gold uncapped accounts?
Gamer King accounts are blended acounts in that they run on the 'Standard' service level during office hours, and on the 'Gold' service level after hours. Gaming traffic (traffic generated in-game to specific servers, not downloads from Steam or Origin) is prioritized on the 'Platinum' level 24/7

2. What is considered after hours?
After hours usually starts sometime between 17:00 and 17:30 and ends at 8:00 the next morning (Monday to Friday). Weekends & public holidays are obviously included. OpenWeb often announce special unshaped evenings or weekends for all types of accounts

3. What sort of traffic is streaming considered as? Is it considered download type traffic, or is it considered web browsing?
Certain streaming (i.e. YouTube) is not shaped as much (hardly at all) as p2p / NNTP / HTTP-downloads, but other streaming (eg. Vimeo / Facebook videos / cracked.com videos etc) is. Netflix & Hulu run at 480p, and sometimes 720p during the day on my 10mb Gamer King account, depending on how busy the network is. I get 720p/1080p after hours and weekends.

4. Are VPN's considered abuse?
No, but I assume VPNs could be subject to daytime shaping. I don't really use VPNs so I stand to be corrected. SSL NNTP is allowed, and is not shaped nearly as much as p2p during the day, for what it's worth

MrBEEP,

Is there any reason is particular why linux distro downloads are being throttled?

deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free

All of these (and any others) give me at maximum 20 kbps; But when I download any other file from the net it maxes out at 800 kbps.

Literally any repository relating to Debian I get terrible speeds.

The network is completely unshaped currently, and never throttled.

Kindly email [email protected] for further investigation

Why don't you rather use a south african mirror?

http://debian.mirror.ac.za/debian/
http://ftp.wa.co.za/pub/debian/debian/ <-- I personally use this one, works great on openweb accounts
ftp://ftp.is.co.za/debian/debian/ <-- should work well on openweb accounts

My config:
Code:
root@heaven-htpc:~# cat /etc/apt/sources.list | grep -v "#" | grep .
deb http://ftp.wa.co.za/pub/debian/debian/ wheezy main
deb-src http://ftp.wa.co.za/pub/debian/debian/ wheezy main

@MrBeep.... I'm hoping you could help me.
I recently cancelled my MWeb account so I have until the end of next month to decide on a new ISP. I've had Openweb and their 6Mbps gold uncapped account in the back of my mind for months now.

My question is, is there some way a potential customer could trial an Openweb account somehow? I just want to be able to maybe run a SpeedTest or something for a 1/2 hour or so to see whether the bump from my current 4Mb to a 6Mb account at Openweb would be worth it (also, whether my line would be stable at it's current sync rate).

Preferably I'd like to do the same with a "normal/cheaper" 10Mb count from someone like WebAfrica or whomever so I can decide, 6Mb premium/gold Openweb account or 10Mb "normal" account from another ISP. Price wise it should works out more or less the same given he bit of online research I've done.

Swe-e-e-e-t! Thanks dude!
(Jeez you guys are on top of these forums :D)

EDIT: Holy crapballs. Super fast service from Openweb on a Sunday Morning, nogal. Received my test account within 30 mins and I can use it until Friday!
You guys rock. And BTW, the speeds I'm getting are insane. Should have done this ages ago.

Received the exact same level of service when I asked yesterday (saturday) :D

I guess Openweb know when to cash in on all us Ex-MWeb subscribers :P

Got a question. I want to upgrade to gamers 2mb. My current package costs 100. So that's paid to the end if the month. According to the website I will pay pro rata. Thus I don't have a problem with.

My question is around my already paid for subscription for the month. Is the cost of the old package calculated pro rata and netted off against the new package cost for the month.

Eg if I have pro rata of 100 on old package and 150 pro rata on new package, will I eventually only pay 50?

Hello akescpt,

When you upgrade an account, we bill the full difference amount between the old account and the new. Pro rata does not apply on upgrades.

It would appear my news server downloads are slightly slower as well. Sitting at between 30 and 60kbps on a 2mb Gold.
