Hi MrR,

This test has allowed us to gather very important data.

The ultimate conclusion is that South Africans are still very bandwidth hungry, and that it is not possible to upgrade accounts without either increasing the contention ratio (thereby decreasing the quality of the connection) or charging for the upgrade.

This will be a reality until Telkom stops milking ISP's and ultimately the consumer with their ridiculous IPC costs.

Just out of interest, what do you base your statement "South Africans are still very bandwitdth hungry" on? Don't get me wrong, I'm not challenging your statement, I would like to understand what benchmarks our local ISP's use to make such comparisons/conclusions.

I think most of us are with you on understanding why you can't/won't automatically bump accounts to the next speed levels as it may be unsustainable from both financial and performance & capacitiy perspectives.

Easy there tiger. Now I know that I'll probably also rage just like you if I had the same problem, there is a way to get quicker results. Instead of PM'ing TelkomZA, rather complain via Telkom's Twitter directly (https://twitter.com/telkomza). If you're too lazy to create a twitter account, then so be it. I've used it three times and had good results. Twice to complain and one time to order a new installation and each time they were quick to respond.

So give that a try instead of waiting for TelkomZA to PM you. Infact, Charl (TelkomZA rep that normally replies here to PMs) is part of the twitter team and they consist of at least 5 + people, so not all of them check the TelkomZA account here for PMs. Hope that helps and good luck.

Grrrrr!

Yeah, mate, I did just now :p Thanks.

My public IP address is, according to speedtest.net, based in a town in Mpumalanga. It's about 500 km away from here. Should I worry about this trivial thing?

I'm still waiting for TelkomZA to do a port reset on my line. Why can't I do this on my own? sigh.

EDIT: it's weird, really :( Only reddit.com can be loaded instantly. That's it. Hahaha! This is so funny.

Might be a good idea to migrate your line to Axxess or Afrihost. You can do your own port resets there. You don't need a data account for that and it is cheap.

Hmm, will look into it next week if the situation's still the same after this weekend. TelkomZA kindly did a port reset on my line and it improves web browsing speed a BIT. Some sites still take forever to load. Not good enough for a 2Mbps line :(

My current public IP address seems to be pointing to a location in Mpumalanga province and I'm based in Eastern Cape. Is that the reason why I've been getting crappy speeds?

I doubt a simple port reset is going to fix your problem. If I were you, I'd get back onto twitter and log a fault with them to have a technician checkout your exchange. It is possible that the routing with your account might be a bit haywire, although MrBEEP / OW support can confirm that for you. Otherwise, in my case, I too had problems early November (slow speeds, high latency in games etc). It turned out that my port on the DSLAM was broken and I got moved to a different one. No more problems after that.

So, hop onto Twitter again, and demand a techie to check your port on the DSLAM :)

Over the test month, bandwidth usage tripled, and this was during the 'quiet' December period.

The more bandwidth we chucked into the pipe, the more it was eaten up.

Ok, will do, thanks very much :)

Eish. And the more we use, the less you make. Can you maybe give us some indication on how your profits dwindle and become a loss the more we use?

For instance, I pay R389 (or thereabouts) for my 4Mbps Gamers King account. If I have a particularly heavy month and do 300GB on that account, won't you in fact lose money due to my heavy usage?

I think I might have done that much maybe once. I can't currently check my usage stats with the details I am currently on. My userCP only has my original details from before I got the alternative routing account I now have.

By the way, I'd be a good feature to be able to check your usage in CP, Mr Beep.

Even though "it's a nature of an uncapped account" (as I was given an answer a while back).

Youtube and some International sites are still slow :( Other than that, everything else seems fine.

EDIT: F that ****! It's nearly impossible to watch any video on Youtube. Just great!

That's been an issue of mine for a long time now. I just assumed Youtube was shaped during office hours, too. :(
