OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread

wanted to know how common it was for this connection to be shaped to 10-20 kbps during the peak hours. I can understand shaping, but not being able to use the Internet for half a day doesn't sound right.

its been getting progressively worse for the past 2-3 months (besides December which was ok mostly as everyone was on holiday I presume). At the moment its the worst its ever been in my experience. Browsing during the day times out, FTP downloads from a local site are around 4KB/s etc etc.... Its like being back on dialup during the day! I don't see how this can be blamed entirely on shaping, I know what shaping is and how its meant to work. When there's not enough bandwidth to give me more than 5KB/s then there's a bigger problem. And i'm not going to log a call, as I see its affecting loads of people. I also know its not my line nor router, as other accounts work fine. I"m just going to suffer through this until they either get more bandwidth, fix whatever's broken, or my patience runs out and I move on...

Kindly PM me with your ADSL username and the name and surname of the registered account holder so that I can investigate

@MrBEEP

You know the issues with shaping during business hours, I need a working account and this one just isn't (Gold)

My experience with OW:

Email support - I'm done wasting time dealing with support emails. Why should I bother to have you "look into it"
if you very well know it's a shaping/problem with many accounts. Just read here (and on Hello Peter)
Call centre - It's impossible to get past the agent at the call center. All they do is take your number and
nobody ever call you back. Still waiting for the CEO's call from weeks ago.
Cancel account - Nobody replies. So you want to take another R299 for poor daytime service in Feb?

I can't use the service during the day.
I can't actually speak to anybody at accounts/admin/support, ever.
I can't get things fixed via email.
And I can't get a reply/confirmation on my cancellation request/questions.

And for this, you want me to pay for Feb?

Trying to download new GW2 patch (it's a biggie) and keep getting hit with 0KB/s. It starts off then just dwindles down in to nothingness.

Any explanation?

Edit: Switched to a 1GB capped account, seems to be doing that there as well. My apologies.

I have personally experienced a situation where tracerouts are good, router stats are good and there is an unshaped period and still getting very slow speeds with normally fast protocols. It turned out, more than once, to be a Telkom fault. I have no idea how that works, but it does happen. Even phoning Openweb support, Telkom support and Axxess support (where my line is) I got responses that my line was either fine or something indeterminate is wrong. Nobody could give me an answer as to what was going on and each time it resolved itself eventually.

Weird stuff.

Nothing but awesomeness this side MrBeep :)

Went to my mate's house yesterday and he says his gold account is going like a Boeing too

What a great way to start the day, with such positive news!

Thank you agentrfr for making my (and the teams) day!

I suppose capd won't be posting here now that there is a positive sentiment around?

The problem I see, MrBeep is that all the people that are not having issues on the account don't say anything, and only when there is a problem they come round to complain.

We did 300 gigs last month. If only telkom would get their butts in gear and move me to a closer exchange. We have 59dB attenuation connecting to an exchange the other side of the equator when there are two exchanges within 220m of where I am sitting.

I'll chime in and add that my 10mb Gamer King is also still going great guns. I just did a speedtest to see what shaping is like today and it's only shaped to 650kBps. That's a whopping 65% of my max line speed available for downloads & streaming during working hours! Loving it! :)

Sjoe, two exchanges within 220m?

Are you sure they aren't SDCs (green/blue boxes)?

No, big white boxes with teledata fiber trunks next to them. The white boxes are fenced off and have multiple keylocks.

Cool, probably an exchange DLU or UMC/DSLAM then.

DLU, SDC, UMC/DSLAM.

Changed my mind, I can't suffer like this, I need to work... MrBeep, will PM you my username, please have a look. Browsing VERY slow, Gmail timing out when sending mail etc....

I've found a solution for today - the local coffee shop with free wifi. Slow internet (that works) and much better coffee than I can make at home.

Yesterday was torment. Scrub that: January has been torment.

Can anybody give feedback on how gaming on xbox live functions during the day? Just want to check it it will be worth putting in leave for GTA V

So at some point we should have a new tool to show line speeds:

http://www.engadget.com/2014/01/21/google-video-quality-report/?ncid=rss_truncated

Google can now say if your internet connection is quick enough for YouTube
BY JON FINGAS JANUARY 21ST, 2014 AT 11:07PM ET

Many are tempted to blame stuttering YouTube streams on our internet providers, but who's really at fault? Google may shed some light on the subject now that it has launched a Video Quality Report. The tool tells surfers how well their providers typically handle YouTube in a given region, breaking reliability down by the feed quality and time of day. Services that properly load at least 90 percent of 720p videos get a "YouTube HD Verified" badge, while those that tend to choke wind up in standard definition and lower definition categories. Only Canadians have access to the report at the moment, although it should reach other countries in time. Wherever it goes, it should help viewers decide whether or not it's time to switch networks -- and it just might spur some companies into making much-needed upgrades.

Link for said tool: http://www.google.com/get/videoqualityreport/#how_video_gets_to_you

Sadly it does not work for us just yet.
