How does the gold account perform with torrents during the day?
Am I wasting my time with this or should I give it a bash?

Will I get 200kb during the day?
I am currently on a Redafrica special and it runs happily at 450k during the day with torrents.

Yeah dude I switched from a Red Africa to a OW standard and its fine, so gold will be just fine. ;)

Just switch off your encryption on the torrents - its IS and IS doesn't like things that dodge shaping & push GBs. Speeds will be fine w/o enc anyway.

Well I emailed support last week with the same problem and suddenly it was fixed for the day (torrents were still a no go but I don't worry about that really), then today the same problem with the IS news server, so emailed again and they gave me a new login to try which is working. Hopefully it carries on working. I'd say email support tomorrow, might be better to deal with them directly.

Thx. Nduimiso. Just mailed them, via my reseller (maybe they will take him more seriously). Lets hope there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Hi Mr Beep, I'm having the same problem as many other users. I'm currently on a 1meg Silver Uncapped, and during the day from about 8/9 am, I get 'shaped' to about 2 kb/s on the news server and about to about 1kb/s on torrents. Yet my HTTP downloads run at full speed all the time.

Now this is odd as I originally trialed the standard account for 2 days, and I was never shaped during the day, yet on the higher Silver package I am 'shaped', which doesn't really make sense. Should I contact support?

Thanks

Funny, I had the same issue, in the sense that my silver package ran nicely for a few days, and then became severely shaped. Almost like they were shaping based on usage? I thought OpenWeb were above that. I hope there is a sensible solution to this problem. If anyone has any bright ideas, let me know!

Hello,

You cannot expect full speed 24 / 7 on torrents and NNTP. I'm afraid it is impossible to offer this on a shaped package, due to Telkoms wholesale cost.

It should however not be 'dead' slow, as someone quite elegantly put it yesterday. If it is very very slow during peak, kindly email support@openweb.co.za

However, it is very important to note that during peak periods, shaping will be enforced on shaped products when the network is busy. If you would like unshaped access 24/7, we have a great range of unshaped services available.

We do NOT throttle.

I would also like to add, around 55% of any given month is completely unshaped (off peak periods mainly). This gives you an opportunity to experience full unshaped speed, yet still pay affordable pricing.

so whats the reasonable expectation during shaped periods? 50% of line speed?

There is no figure, as it is based on how busy the network is at any given time.

a few KB/s is not accepted.

Agreed, I certainly don't expect full speed on nntp, but I was concerned with the sudden drop of speed during peak hours. Getting close to 4% of full speed seems a little extreme as far as shaping goes, so I have contacted support@openweb.co.za. I would imagine that above 25% of full speed would be an expected speed. Does that sound reasonable?

Thanks for the help :)
