was crawling along at 15KB/s this morning at 9.30. only started using the account since tuesday. is this normal performance?

Please try after 18:00 and provide feedback.

Peak time shaping is currently in effect

My latency issue seems to have resolved itself now, so touch wood for now. Torrents are still crawling along, though.

Mr Beep

Is the shaping also affecting gold uncapped unshaped accounts? Because NNTP was flying yesterday at avg 405KB/s and now it is between 150 and 260KB/s.

EDIT: Speed tests are 100%. Currently on trial/test account that was working full tilt. very happy.

Thx.

No, shaping is only applied to shaped services.

Then something is rotten in the state of NNTP. :)

Just checked my 1M silver packages at home and it is running at 2KB/s. I doubt the shaping rules will be that severe.

I`m on the standard uncapped 1 meg trial for about 14 hours now and so far i`ve been very happy. During office hours utorrent runs around 50 kB/s and after 6 pm between 90 and 120 kB/s.You tube, browsing ect. is working fine during the day after disabling utorrent.I`ll send another update after my trial has expired. So far so good.

I'm also having poor NNTP speeds at the moment (I'm on a 1mbps Gold a/c on IS backbone), I've been speaking to OW about it when I have seen it, just dropped MrBeep an email now as part of some troubleshooting he has been helping with.
Not getting anything better than 15kbps at the moment.
Speeds were maxing my line until about 10 days ago when this started. Speeds up now and then and a/h but has been fine o/h before then.
Does seem like it is NNTP being shaped as I can pull a file over FTP & HTTP from IS at full speeds (I'm using IS News server)
I would have thought (maybe wrongly) that being local traffic from the IS News server it wouldn't have been shaped.

I have logged a fault regarding the IS News server.

Engineers are busy investigating, as we have had a few complaints about this today.

Hi Mike

I will check your mail and respond.

Wishlist:

I wish OW had a live ticker on their site that displays the current packages and what protocols for each are currently being shaped and at which level. That would make trouble shooting so much easier. So when we experience issues, we can go have a look, and if it shows that a protocol is shaped at the moment at 50%, we do not waste hours on troubleshooting. this will be so handy.

There are so many variables involved, from ISP to telkom plug in your living room, to birds crapping on your cables. Is it possible to implement a feature like this, or is it a pipe dream? will also make your life easier.

I am currently on the R169 Gamer's Delight special. I saw the new Standard uncapped special and thought I'd upgrade to 2Mbps. I didn't read the bit that said I would not be able to do that. I have now cancelled that upgrade.

That begs the question then: How useful are these specials then if they are for new customers only? Now if I want to upgrade to 2Mbps, I have to fork out R88 extra over the special, apart from the line rental. It brings the total extra I have to pay per month to R228, instead of R140. That makes me think twice about upgrading the line and getting the faster account, especially when the Standard account is probably not as optimised for gaming and downloading as the "Gamer's Delight, Downloader's Right" special is.

I have been touting Openweb all over the place as the ISP to be with, but I am a bit let down by this now. And now it leaves me open to considering specials from other ISPs, like WebAfrica's R239 2Mbps account. Where is the logic in that?

Edit: I was in fact being a massive idiot: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...dback-Thread?p=9874364&viewfull=1#post9874364

I have to agree with you in a sense, it's a great strategy for getting new customers in the door but helps very little with customer retention. I wouldn't mind seeing ISPs entertaining the idea of some sort of loyalty program that benefits subscribers who stick around.

My thoughts exactly. Now it leaves me open to considering specials from other ISPs, like WebAfrica's R239 2Mbps account. Where is the logic in that?
