Openweb uncapped ADSL feedback

Ah, didn't see your email this afternoon, MrBeep. I see you sent me details for a DSLHeaven account, but I think I'll stick with the IS account for now. I've been monitoring WebAfrica's feedback threads the last few months, and I do not trust their network at all. It seems a bit on the unstable side.

I think my problem might just be that I was very spoilt on the VB backbone, with it being almost a true uncapped account at one point. The IS account does seem to have some slowdowns during the day, but at night and over weekends it runs fine, like right now everything is flying again. In the coming months most of my usage will probably take place at night anyway.

It's much preferable to going onto the WA network, at any rate. I really do appreciate the effort from Openweb support, though.

Well, I'm back to full speed ahead this morning so all is very good. (IS Backbone, 4MB Gold)

Thanks for the "turn off the router for 20min" tip MrBeep. I must admit I am aways fearful of calling Telkom to do a port reset as I just dont have the kind of time or patience. :-)

No, my bad, same as yesterday it would seem.

That 20min reset did not work for me. So glad this is my last day with"gold". Usenet is dead, torrents not even crawling. And can't even update my peerblock lists.Cape Town

And things like Facebook, 9GAG and Gmail? Also slow/dead?

Im just trying to figure out where things are falling over. I mean I'm getting 3.4Mbps on speedtest, this forum is almost too fast but have an image in a forum post and you're it takes forever.

Odd. Just ran the speed test provided by mybroadband. Local download speed is 3.47Mbps (Awesome), International is 0.06Mbps (Eh?)

Is there a line down between SA and the rest of the world, are we running over a piece of wet string?

Nope, switched my router off at 9:30AM, and just switched it back on. International downloads and torrents still crawling.

This is clearly shaping protocols, because speeds die and come back on the clock. I get crappy speeds more or less between 8AM and 10PM. I can hardly believe it's normal to get download speeds of 6-8kb/s on a 384 line during peak times, especially not when on the clock at 10PM it goes back up to full speed.

MrBeep emailed me details for a DSLHeaven account, but those accounts are notorious for being crappy, as WebAfrica has a crap network that is either broken or severely oversubscribed. Don't want to go from bad to worse.

Oh No. DSLHeaven is where the internet goes to die. Horrible, horrible place. But ja, I would imagine that these Gold accounts would have shaping on download protocols during the day, it would seem logical. To be honest I've never tried as I only do my thing from around 7PM onwards.

I'm going to do this router off/on between 13:00 and 14:00 (Business line) and see what comes of it. Will report back shortly after that.

Yeah, most of my internet activity takes place at night as well, so it's not too serious. It would have been nice to be able to have downloads running through the day so that they're finished when I get home late afternoons, but it's something I can live without for now.

Had the router off for 30min and...........Hard to explain. Over all its a better experience. Google images flies now which it didnt before the reboot.

MrBeep. Is there anyway for us lowly people to get a port reset done without having to deal with 1st Tier Hellkom Support. For example I have a connection that works in on of the Telkom shops, could they request a port reset on my behalf?

Please mail me quick: [email protected]

I would like to investigate your issue further.

Thanks MrBeep.

Have emailed you the username. To help you out I have done the following:
1) Changed Routers
2) Changed DNS (from auto assigned to actual local to actual overseas. Overseas was the absolute worst)
3) Factory reset on new router.

Like I've said, for all intents and purposes one would think this account is performing. And it does, it completely flies on some sites where others it is dead. Thats on both local and international sites.

Last week, MOnday to Friday I had not a single issue. Monday until now, not so good. I dont know, I must be a line/exchange problem as I doubt its you guys. I know Im not being throttled as my IS usage stats I'm full speed.

If it helps in anyway, I download off of Usenet using an international server and I've never had less that 400kbps albeit after hours and weekends.

Per my feedback, I dont know what you did but PLEASE dont change a thing. If 4MB flies like this I dont even want to know what a 10MB line would do.

THank You very much.

Mine's also going a lot faster today. Not full speed, but more than acceptable for a shaped account. Whatever might have been wrong previously seems to be fixed now.

Well, I switched from Webafrica to Openweb Gold, on the 1MB site.

A definite improvement, as a clan gamer, we need good latency, and the openweb account is delivering as advertised.
Thank you.

The only thing i have with WebAfrica is my Line rental @R250 pm. the reason for this is that on their weblogin- where i can manage my line- they have a very handy feature that allows me to check the attunuety of my line\general quality. Secondly, there is a handly link that allows me to reset my telkom port - and it takes 2 mins. I really hope openweb will have a simular system inplace when their web interface comes online.

Speed also has been superb, regardless of time\weekend or weekday. which is also quite important with my current requirements to connect to VPN and RDP - and gaming.(A League of Ledgends server would be nice tho - Battlefield latency is around 15ms.)

Keep it up - please!!!! :D
