Paying so much for games

Why not? I'm buying Batman Arkham Asylum off Gumtree for R450. Original retail price R899. I have no issue with this, at all! I guess that makes me scum! As you so wonderfully put :)

I bet you even borrowed someone's tools before, instead of rushing out to buy a R10k full set for yourself. What a scumbag.

I've already said that you can't compare major capital purchases with buying software. If you can afford a secondhand game you can also afford to buy it new. All games will be discounted to a price point that meets your expected utility sooner or later.
Toys are toys whether they are cars bikes skateboards or games. Cars also come in different price points some new even lower than cars available on the 2nd hand market like the chinese things or vivo, figo etc.
Same price point, expected utility argument...

I meant that pirates are scum. Should have worded out any ambiguity. But nonetheless, Arkham Knight has been out for a while now and will be included in the end of year sales. Can't understand why you wouldn't wait to buy it new and actually reward the dev for such an outstanding effort.

My point is, the dev has already been rewarded for that specific sale. Its no fault of mine that the game has become second-hand, hence I pay the appropriate second-hand price.

Your aggressive manner negates any need for a considered reply.

Can I come live in your world where there are no poor people please

I never said that people should magically produce more money. The same money that is being spent on secondhand games can be spent on new games.

All this heated discussion is fine and dandy, but this in no way helps the OP :)

@OP and console game players: Would it be useful if there was a tool/site where you could get notified via email the moment somebody puts a second hand game up for sale?

Lets say you select a game as "wanted" and put up a price threshold of R300 max, and if somebody lists the game within your threshold you get an email.

PC gamers already use something similar. isthereanydeal.com lets you sync your wishlists, and will notify you of any major discounts. If your threshold is R300, you can basically buy any PC game that isn't brand new. Change to PC man.

No, toys are not toys. The difference is big - a secondhand car buyer can't afford the same product new. Cars also have a much longer useful lifespan, and are far more complicated a purchase with all the many warranties, parts and considerations.

If you can afford a secondhand game you can afford a new game. Just wait for a sale.

/confesses to playing SuperMeatBoy on my sons PS Vita instead of buying my own copy

Mwuhaha, I'm so scummy I created my own profile on my son's PS4 and played Assassins Creed using the DVD that he bought

Oh yes, and my brother gave me a lift to the doctor (I should have bought my own car or called a/n [-]Uber[/-] taxi (bad Uber's put taxi's out of business) after I tripped and hurt myself on all the Assassin's Creed game tie-ins I bought.

I'm not going to read the whole thread but it looks like you have something against buying games secondhand? There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. It's part of the appeal of buying a game on a disc versus a digital copy.

If that's not what you are saying, then sorry. Just taking a quick break from work.

I specifically directed the question at console gamers looking for 2nd hand games, but thank you for the answer. I dropped PC gaming many years ago in favour of simplicity and the fact that kids can use them as well, so seriously, enough with trying to convert the atheists to your religion of choice.

So, console guys, would you guys use something like I described?

Oh....this is your point.

and console owners? (who hardly get such sales)

I find that hard to believe. My step-bro plays mostly on PS4 and is constantly telling me about games he's bought on sale.

PC gamers are the atheists here bro.

Time is also a factor my price point could be R300 for the game NOW not when it is on sale in 6 months. If it is offered at R300 on any market new or secondhand NOW then I will buy it. My price point now is simply lower than the new price. You cannot remove time as a factor of a purchase.

Heres another example, I wanted a Nexus Player. I could order one from ebay for R1200 and have it in a month's time. But due to plans and wanting to use it now I bought it from a SA store for R2000. Time influenced my price point.

I'd rather pick my own games and pay full price than pay a monthly fee for random, old, schit games.

I would hardly call Battlefield 4 and Battlefield hardline (EA access) and Tomb Raider (Last months free Xbox gold game for free) as that old .
I would also not really call Titanfall a bad game either....
What about Fifa 16 ? Too old ?
Have you even seen what games are on offer at the moment through EA access before you commented ?

What about the fact that I will be playing Star Wars Battlefront from 12th of November already ? or is that too old as well ?

On second hand games.

I am pretty sure the hefty price of new games factors in the second hand market.

When I on sell my second hand game I cannot use it anymore.

Many second hand game buyers will go out and buy version x+1 of the game because they enjoyed version x a lot. So for developers the second hand market can generate a lot of sales if their products are decent.

A win-win for all.
