I'm on the R250 uncapped and I've been having extremely slow connectivity to any Google service (Google search, youtube, Android updates, play store, google apis etc) for the past few days.
This only happens on the Rain network, if i switch to ADSL, it's perfect.

I use Cloudflare DNS for both the Rain and ADSL, and I even tried using Google's DNS so I doubt its a DNS issue. Also tried restarting the router and switching bands between 1800 and 2600 mhz. Nothing helps.
I'm in Durban, if that makes any difference.

Requests to any google service just seem to stall and only work after a few retries.
This affects quite a few websites, as alot of sites nowadays use Google font's or have some Google integration.

Anyone else getting this?

So you are not having issues with non-google services and sites?

Ours is slow since yesterday morning, but seems very unspecific. Not just google services, just randomly will be slow. Speedtests shows fine though, 30mbps down. 20mbps up all day long. very odd

Yeah, been having the exact same issue in durban as well. It's not exactly like that for me though, like on youtube the images wont load and navigating the site is a pain but videos play quickly and fine in 1080P. I switched on a VPN and that fixed the issue so its definitely something weird going on with their network - in Durban at least

Yes! I should've mentioned that part, the actual youtube video plays fine even in 1080p, the rest of the site barely loads.

I thought its only me having this problem but seems to be a problem with Rain.

Anything google is slow and takes multiple reloads before it works. Even sites that use google fonts are affected since they don't load properly without the google fonts (includes rain.co.za at times).

Rain has messed up their network & priorities and its ruining their reputation.

I am in Pretoria and i noticed people either don't notice or are afraid to say they are having bad experience with rain these days. We used to brag about using rain but now its on par with cellc and the joke is on us.

OP you're not the only, my Rain has been doing the same thing lately. It takes a good 30 seconds to load up youtube both on my phone and tv, but works fine when I switch to telkom.

I've been having similar problems, Google searches timing out, YouTube videos buffer 4 seconds in and then plays normally.

Game downloads from Xbox App swing between 0 and various speeds every 3 seconds

Must admit I too have noticed slow connectivity past couple of days just getting into random sites be it mybroadband or youtube and at times sites wont load unless i reload - thought it was my browser at first but it wasn't. Speed tests show the same usual decent standard speeds. 55+ download and 19 upload. I happened to come across a post by @cavedog talking about cloudflare CDN and local connections etc somewhere in the forum and that promptem to change from cloudflare DNS. That did not help either. However switching from the 5Ghz network to the 2.4ghz seemed to help and sites didn't refuse to open on the first try. Still cannot track the issue but there is something amiss somewhere.

Another rain user here. Everything is fine for me, any time of day: except this place. The forums are just slow. Sometimes 5 or more seconds to load a page, which was always instant before a couple of weeks ago.

For those that feel that mybroadband.co.za and takealot.com is slow. It is because Cloudflare has stopped access to it's local CDN servers for anyone not on Cloudflare Enterprise. Right now traffic goes to the nearest CDN that your ISP announces and it varies. Cool Ideas goes to London. Afrihost,Webafrica and Axxess goes to Kigali Rwanda. Telkom ISP and Telkom Mobile goes to some random North African country.

You can confirm this by doing a trace route to mybroadband.co.za or takealot.com to see what route it takes.

As for google they still have their JHB peering for everyone so google should not be slow unless Rain is routing it somewhere else. Can someone on Rain just do a trace route to 8.8.8.8 to see what route it takes but should peer with google at NAP Africa JHB.

Google services are not necessarily slow, they don't connect well, its almost like there is no connection then after multiple reloads it connects and works well. With youtube it takes time (or multiple page reloads) to initially load but once it does the videos load fine without buffering, the buffering that might occur is only due to overall recent slow speeds on rain.

Only their rain knows why its happening.

Traceroute to Google DNS. Just the last 4 hops shown, and Rain had 1 extra hop compared to ADSL.

Vox ADSL:
41.193.119.66 - Vox Cape Town
72.14.216.94 - Google USA
**** - Unknown Hop
8.8.8.8 - dns.google

Rain:
41.73.34.234 - igw02-jhb-core.rain.network
196.60.9.113 - 196-60-9-113.ixp.joburg
**** - Unknown Hop
8.8.8.8 - dns.google

Also, Takealot and Mybroadband are pretty quick for me, it seems to be only services coming out of Google that are problematic.
