Yes, I also see this as a HUGE slap in the face of ordinary citizens of SA: when the hoi-poloi was here during the SWC 2010, the SAPS almost passed out with the effort of being visible, being everywhere and sending a clear message to thugs: stay away.
As soon as the distinguised guests left our shores, the only thing that makes SAPS members pass out is the tightness of their belts around their fat stomachs, the result of munching too much KFC during working hours.

it's not blaming it on the past, it is saying the past had an impact on the present, and for any criminal, situation and event, this is true. people don't become religious unless they are taught, people don't become socially inept unless alienated from people, people don't become house robbers if they have families and drive expensive cars. every single thing has factors and side effects. there are plenty of people under the same conditions who don't kill people or steal from others, but you will find other factors have moulded these people.
saying people to get over apartheid after 15 years is like telling vietnam veterans to get over the war. the government in my opinion does care enough, but they're just incompetent and corrupt and don't take their job as seriously as they should

i agree, but as far as i'm aware they were told to make a bigger effort to advertise the country and many were paid overtime? this is where the government is slacking

Yea but why do we not focus on what is making people criminal and violent and tackle that issue, why are we spending millions on the blame game? Look for a solutions to the problems you face you is certainly not a motto many african countries would use. Better to ignore these problems and lay blame than sort them out.
O well it is rather disappointing to see educated folk thinking along the same lines though.

from what i understood from the study the government didn't agree with it, saying that it doesn't explain countries that had more violent wards turning out more civil despite being in africa. i am a firm believer that apartheid does have a lasting impact on people, just as much as it does on the people who miss Die Stem and the Good old days. previous studies have shown that most criminals are disturbed or desperate people with nothing to lose, desperate as in they still display some intelligence and morals but can't get money another way, and disturbed as in they have terrible reasoning skills and family lives.
the government is useless, there is no doubt about it, but i still feel that apartheid has lasting influences in the long run.

Simply by using the word 'blame' in their headline (and you will notice that slightly more intellectual newspapers like the M&G didn't use the word 'blame' in their headlines because the report doesn't blame apartheid for anything) News24 has done nothing other than spark off a great big round of contentless 'debate' about how blaming stuff for things doesn't get you anywhere.
Reading all this **** you have think to yourself that the only explanation that makes any sense is that people are trolling.
Very sadly, I think this is actually what they really think: 15 years is enough to get over Apartheid; people are violent because they decide to be; blaming the ANC for being useless will actually get us somewhere.
The irony is pretty rich, though.
Actually there's an important factor which contributed to lower crime levels during the WC that you are neglecting to mention. The thugs were too pre-ocuppied with all the soccer going on.

Karoo, tjomma, lived in a farm shack house, the farm didn't belong to us, my father earned a living doing labour intensive work as a general handy man. Never stole, murdered or killed anyone on my life, and I don't see poverty as a reason to do so whatsoever.
I got brought up on a farm, sure it was not a shack, it was a nice homestead. I also remember having to have the staff sleep at the entrances of the house when the men were out... with fire arms. I remember two neighboring farms getting attacked during that time. I remember having to watch for the land mines and the stories of rape and murder. I guess having a farm between the Ciskei and the Transkei was perhaps different to living in the Karoo.
I dont think poverty is being blamed for the culture of violence, but simply one of many factors in todays violence.
so ons kan aflei: two areas can have the same levels of poverty, but different levels of violence, hence violence is only correlated and not related to poverty, there are other factors, cultural maybe, domestic?, lack of upbringing, who knows poverty isn't one to blame.

No poverty is not to blame. That is too one-dimentional view of what Apartheid did to black people in this country. It didn't just subject them to poverty, it did many other things too.

(I'm assuming you think AA and Apartheid are just as bad as each other because they are both official forms of racial prejudice. In the same way that holding someone's hand is the same as having a week-long orgy because they both involve touching people...)
