Report blames apartheid for violence

You know the reason I've decided to take the Devil's advocate position on this one is as follows. I've spent a fair bit of time in Europe and the States, and have seen pretty much the same patterns of disgruntlement. The youth basically feel let down by the government. It's really not just a South African thing. Job markets are competitive (and at the moment depressed), and people just don't seem to have any hope. There was a pretty descriptive Time or Newsweek article on it a few months back. Just reminded me that it's not something just isolated to SA.

The equivalent here would be - is it more important to feel that there's progress or for actual progress?
If so then let's be specific. It's too simple to play ANC-vs-Apartheid games. There must be better options than that. I think we deserve better than what either set of people have presented...

No where else to go? Kenyans went to Tanzania, Tanzanians went to Zambia, Zambians went to Zimbabwe, Zimbabweans are here... guess we had to put our foot down.

The French/Belgians/English could go back to the continent, the Afrikaners had no where else to go.
 
Well for me...we can always say that apartheid is how old and what what but I still believe it still influences South Africa today.For some reason race is still a big issue.
 
What other african countries had apartheid governments? Colonization is a different beast altogether.

The ANC needs to take it's fair share of the blame for the poor education prior to '94, post '94 100% of the blame.

Basically none as far i am aware yet you see the same thing through out africa. Violence and corruption but in SA it is because of apartheid the rest of africa blame the colonialists. As long as you are playing the blame game the people will believe it is fault of the past and not the present and things won't change because nobody in africa thinks they are fault or doing anything wrong for that matter. They truly believe the white man made them this way and it is the only way they can go about things. Criticize them for it and you are a bloody racist agent :D
 
I blame the ANC. Can I write a report and be paid millions of tax payers money?
 
there seems to be huge issues in both camps. yes, apartheid is still to blame today. i don't know why every white person takes this as a personal insult to them or think it's the governments way of dodging responsibility. if a girl is raped as a child, that effect stays with them their whole life, and if they become a mother eventually and because of that psychological damage pass it on to their child, it passes onto another generation. it's easy to say "15 years is enough!" forgetting that people live on average for about 60 years, and that is still a lot of time to carry emotional baggage and pass it onto others.

with that said, there are plenty of people also to blame for rushing to use racism and apartheid as an excuse for just about anything and to avoid responsibility, but i feel that in this case that it is justified, and that many people are using the "oh look, the ANC is using apartheid again, let's whine" disclaimer to avoid what the study is really trying to say
 
Smalltown so if a female gets gang raped and has a baby will that baby be as messed up as the mother as well? What is the study trying to say? I lost the message in between all the blame.

there are a lot of factors that affect a mother and child, that is why there is psychology. no matter how good the parents are or how close the community is, if you struggle to get work and are degraded at work you are going to be angry, and the study was not WHY there was crime, it was WHY the crimes were so violent. i think being degraded as a human being is a pretty good reason for crimes to be violent.

i heard the study on the radio this morning, and the title wasn't "Apartheid to blame for violent crimes", it was why crimes in SA were so violent.
 
Ok so wait a second if i get degraded at work and struggle does this mean i am going to get my 3 mates and go gang rape some hospital workers? Gouge out someone's eyes? Rape and murder a family?

Good GOD just the other day i was feeling a bit down and this old lady walked by and thought yes bitch you gonna get it now!!!!!!!!!! FEAR ME i have been degraded ATTACK!!!!!!!!!!!

Blame who you like but until people start looking at themselves the problem will never go away, when people are able to pass the buck with such ease it makes murder and rape seem fine. I did it because the white man degrades me, i have no idea why i just raped and murdered this black lady though since my hatred is for the white man o well i am only 19 but apartheid made do it.

no, because you spend your time on mybb :p you're assuming a criminal will see things from your view and make judgements from having your experiences. most criminals HAVEN'T had the family you've had, the education you've had, the life you've had. understand that. most criminals probably couldn't even pass an IQ test.

again, taking the situation and twisting it to your life. have you had someone lock the door when you walk past simply because of your skin colour? have you been told that you're a stupid inferior race when you've put all your effort into something?

yes, apartheid going away made magical houses fall out of the sky and made millions of educated white people descend on townships with good will to teach students to help them get an education, and all white people gave up their wealth and universities lowered their fees so that everyone in the country could have a tertiary education.

rape isn't about sex, it's about control. there are plenty of ways to get sex without breaking into a house just to rape someone specific. why do you think these people need to display control? or is it easier to just say the government condones it and hands out free knives and guns? better yet, the government doesn't care, because they aren't sitting outside our house 24/7 protecting your fancy furniture, car and internet connection.
 
Well dude how many poor people who live in those same conditions do not resort to violence? It seems an easy way out, let me go kill and blame it on the past. The government does not help either, crime almost seems normal to most folk because the government is corrupt, the cops are corrupt so now a nation of uneducated people will just follow the lead surely? Of course it is racist to suggest that could the problem.

The government doesn't care, if they did you would have world cup security round the clock surely?
