RICA

They are so greedy they'll break the law, to ensure the revenue stream keeps coming... Welcome to ZA!

And what pisses me off is, I spend my entire lunchtime RICAing some prepaid SIM cards, and over 2 hours later they are STILL USELESS and I have to hear "ag shamepies.. the platform is overloaded"

I'm waiting to see what happens to me (if anything) on August 1. If I'm still up and running I'll wait a couple days then name and shame the person who unlawfully contravened govt legislation by RICAing me without my knowledge/info/consent.

Are you sure that it was actually a MTN representative phoning and not a scammer?

Just remember, if you don't RICA - you will still pay your bills... :)

Just because you're cut off - you are liable to have gone and RICA'd - you are still bound by your contract.

30 June cut off. July 1 - no connection.

Bound by contract to RICA? Wheres this?

RICA is a joke. I've heard that RICA equipment has already fallen into the hands of criminals (please correct me if I'm wrong) So all we've ended up with is some extra schlep for the law abiding average consumer.

Indeed... I hear its also been hacked.. that's why people are finding themselves magically RICA without even doing the effort.

Souce? Or is it this third-party-in-a-pub-arguing-about-the-stupid-government type of information?

I will try and remember who told me but there has been at least one RICA machine that's gone missing. As for the hacking part... you can do your own search on the internet... the info is there.

I'm pretty sure there would be some sort of server/client relationship with the RICA machines. It would just be a matter of disabling that client on the server. As for the hacking, really, what would be the benefit? It's not as if they log your credit card information. The practice of needing identification when registering for a mobile phone is a custom all around the world, as per usual South Africa has been a bit slow in catching up.

Errrmmmm, no idea where you have been, but internationally, although they ask for ID, they don't need proof of address. When I arrived here, I went to the first mobile operator shop I saw at the airport, and bought a prepaid SIM, showing my passport during the transaction. The provider does not even have my address now, since they don't need it! When logging in online, the address fields are non-compulsory... :)

How can I check if my MTN number has been RICAd? I was advised to dial *131*3#, I did that and got a response that said "Yello! Your MSISDN is 2783*******" (the stars represent my number which were shown, I can't give out my number :)). Does that mean I've been RICAd?

No, that just sounds like you checked what your own number is.

As expected, Im connecting perfectly on all 3 contracts but never RICAd at all. And no wasn't a scammer, you can smell those a 100 miles away... i love them, i have great fun with phone scammers, leading them on heh heh. Once a scammer said he "paid" money into my account for a router i was selling, hadn't cleared yet and he was pushing to come collect, some story about going overseas tomorrow, i said no problem and gave him my address to come collect: he lived in PTA North and I gave him the address of teh Selby Police Station, ha ha! never heard from him... i miss him.
