RICA

I have a MTN number via Nashua Mobile .... I went in to the NM store where I organised my latest contract, and they (Nashua) state categorically that my SIM is RICA'd

But if I go into the MTN site and enter my number, it tells me it is NOT RICA'd.

So my question is .... who will supposedly cut me off after the RICA deadline date? NM, or MTN? And what recourse could I have against Nashua Mobile, who state that I am RICA'd, whereas MTN says I am not

The incompetence of our mobile operators, and of our G'ment who introduced this RICA nonsense, knows no bounds.

Thank you for the overwhelming response to my initial post regarding assistance with RICA guys. Ive since left this subforum and renounced my RICA officership so regrettably im no longer able to assist you in this.

Is anyone else able to assist us? I'm having the exact same issue atomcrusher is.

I've recently upgraded, and part of the upgrade is that you have to RICA, otherwise you can't upgrade. So I went to the store with all the documentation and RICA'd, but checking on the MTN online RICA checker, it says that I'm NOT RICA'd.

Complaining to MTN about this, they just tell me to go to the store again and redo this.

How the hell can they still not have my details after being a customer for 10 years, through 5 upgrades.

Hi all,

I have an MTN SIM (or rather, my husband has one, I just use it) that has most definitely been RICA'd. My husband made the effort to get this MTN number RICA'd specifically when he got his new cellphone contract (also at MTN).

I received a call from MTN about 5 months ago asking me to please RICA my SIM. I told the lady that the SIM was already RICA'd. About 2 weeks ago I started getting sms's from MTN reminding me to RICA my SIM. I assumed it was a generic message so I ignored it.

I got another one an hour ago, saying specifically "Your number is not RICA'd". I used the MTN link to check, and lo, my number is not RICA'd. This SIM was definitely already RICA'd. I refuse to yet again spend time on getting it done when it has already been done. What happened to my previous RICA information? Did MTN magically "lose" it? Well then tough for them.

I plan to kill this contract when it ends anyway, so I am not wasting any more of my time to put together and go give my private information to people who apparently lie to you about doing the RICA'ing and then throw away your paperwork. RICA sucks, and is totally useless because it's not helping us track down scammers and thieves anyway. And if they can lose your RICA so easily, then what hope is there for anything good to come out the system?

Sucks a lot ... I have had to do mine 3 times. Seems that the sms's finally stopped.

@snakepit, how does this RICA stuff affect visitors to S.A.? I always buy a sim card for 3G, to use for a week or so, but it expires after three months, so next time I have to buy a new one.

Hi Koffiejunkie

you will still need to Rica when you buy a new sim card (with Passport etc)

I've just had my service suspended because I am "Rica bared" for not registering even though I have and THE WEBSITE SAYS THAT MY SIM IS REGISTERED!

MTN you are a bunch of %$%^% I hate you. Never again

WtF? You've got 'til the end of June.

I would LOVE to see how many subscribers have still not RICA'd.

I am really hacked off that I have to submit to the forces of Evil before month-end.

Small question, what if i don't have proof of residence? The only thing that i do have is an electronic Telkom bill, everything else is prepaid. I am currently paying occupational rent and waiting for the transfer to happen, which means i don't have a formal rental agreement. Would a offer to purchase work as proof?

Thats a good question- il check and revert back. what i did to RICA was have a letter signed by my landlord along with a water/ lights statement no older than 3 months, that'll work.

eisch....1 month left, this forum is gonna get a liddle busy with cutoffs from people who aint rica'd, im a liddle scared TBH...

RICA - What a FARCE

The labourer at work lost his phone, and needed a new SIM card, so he goes to town (I give him a lift) He buys a MTN SIM from the street corner vendor 25 cents, borrows my phone, to activate the SIM, verbally gives his address, and ID number, and WHAM, the SIM is RICA'ed, and activated ... , the joys of living in Africa ...

I won't RICA and if MTN cut me off (3 contracts) end June, I will cancel their debit order, not pay another cent and move to another SP. In terms of their contractual agreement, they must provide a service as long as I pay the associated fee - there is no mention of anything to do with forcibly providing information or RICA on that contract, regardless of legislation being passed (they are 2 seperate matters). If they want my business so bad, they'll send someone to my house to RICA me. Same with "Premier Banking" and FICA. You like my business so much? Don't make me run after you.

I hope many join me in this opinion and action. Yes, I have been NUMEROUSLY screwed by MTN so YES there are sour grapes but this RICA thing is them digging their own grave as far as my relationship with them is concerned. If MTN comes knocking on my door to RICA me, no problem life goes on, but considering they don't even have the decency to respond to complaints or provide solutions to ongoing, big, legitimate customer problems, what are the chances? I love it.

Last week I realised what a farce RICA really is... Was in SA for a week, and needed a local mobile number, thus went to the shop at OR Tambo. Got the SIM card, and the lady said, okay, now we need to activate and RICA it. When I gave her my EU passport, she asked for my postal code, and, when I gave her the first letter (not a number) she promptly made up an address... hey presto! The card was RICA'ed and activated 5 minutes later, with totally bogus information! :D

im so happy at this moment!!!! i am rica`ed according to all info and yet i have been disconnected. or so the very friendly lady on the phone tells me \o/

MTN confused

I checked the MTN website checker a few months ago - confirmed both my wife's and my cards RICAed

Suddenly today getting message on phones when making calls that must RICA

Checked on the website checker again - not RICAed

Had this account since 1995.

Did the verification thing a year ago when renewing one of the contracts in store (or so we thought)

WTF MTN????

How NOT to RICA / How to RICA over the phone

OK so MTN phones me over and over again last month to RICA my 3 Contracts. I tell them that if they want me RICA'd they must come to my door and do it, cos I aint got the time and if I'm such a "valued customer" they'll do that. Of course I'm looking for a way to p155 them off the way they have ripped me off for years, so I also say that "if they cut me off, I'll stop paying, simple. I entered into a contract stating I pay X for Cell Service Y, and if you don't deliver that service, contaract breached". They say it's govt legislation blah blah and I say "well I didn't sign a contract with govt and I don't pay govt for my cell service, do I?".

Anyway, I tell the lady all this and with much "mmmming" and "aaahing" the phonecall ends.

Guess what? Check on RICA Site (2 of them plus SMSM service) a couple wees later and TA DAAA!!! all phone numbers RICAd! They say they got my details in 2009!

HA HA! I have moved since then so that's worthless - just shows you, obviously they are so desperate to not cut people off they hit the "RICA" button without all the needed government papers! So MTN obviously broke the govt ruling by RICA-ing me just because I told them to get knotted. I am sure I am not the only one that got "AutoRICAd"

Go MTN! Hope a RICA govt official reads this and shuts you down...
