Router Battery Backup

Does anyone have one of these? Futurelight has a discount code, 50% off for today only

Code: FEB50

Would not recommend, based on these comments. It is not a 'UPS' as it cannot be used while charging, so is not 'set and forget.

Anyone know whether a single Gizzu 36W will provide sufficient power to power the following for 2.5 hours

1. MikroTik RB2011UiAS-2HnD and
2. Ubiquiti UAP-LR

The plan during loadshedding is to run the AP in low power mode (and 2.4GHz only) powered off the Gizzu PoE port. During loadshedding the AP will be the only connected device.

Because I trust you guys so much, I thought I'd ask a question here.
I bought this Vizia UPS for fibre.

But in my wisdom , I see the router and ONT are both 1.5amp at 12V.
The UPS is max 24W and if I understand correctly, I need 36W.
Correct?

I'm thinking of returning it, are there any other recommendations?

Soooo...
Had a reason to use the UPS yesterday.
The UPS powers router fine.
The ONT however was not happy, even with UPS/ONT only, so it's not a power issue.
UPS flashes a red light (I'm thinking this is 'bad'). ONT showed no lights, nothing.

The documentation on the UPS is pretty crap, not sure what the issue is.
I can only assume it might be a polarity issue?
Returning it to Takealot...

On the hunt again for a USP, battery pack...
Maybe something where you can swap polarity?

Edit:
Ok it's not a polarity issue. Checked the adapters for both ONT and router and they match.
The ONT adapter does however say Alternating Power Supply, and the UPS says "...for DC Devices..."
I assume this is the problem?

I assume this is the problem.

The adapters supplied with (most) devices convert 220v AC (alternating current) into the required DC (direct current) voltage

Some devices do use low voltage AC, but I'd be very surprised if your ONT requires AC. Check you're supplying it with the correct voltage

Yep, this is really confusing...
I found the datasheet for the ONT

The ONT is 12v 1.5a - according to the data sheet, doesn't this make it the DC unit?

The power adapter does not have any DC/AC markings for Input/Output, just text saying Alternating Power Supply.

Just coming back to issue again, UPS power on but then starts blinking red light when plugged in to ONT.
If it's not a polarity issue or power issue can I assume it's a DC/AC issue?

Followup: Gizzu 36W working very nicely. Powering the Miktotik RB2011 (via DC connector) and UAP-LR (via PoE).

Haven't tested how long it will run for
Mine lasted about 30 months, then the battery was going flat 90 minutes into load shedding. I replaced the batteries with these Samsung's. Now it lasts more than 4 hours . Using a fibre ONT, Ubiquity Edge Router X and a Unify AC Lite.

Check this out on takealot: Samsung 30Q 18650 3000mah - 2 Pack

Either post a pic of the power adapters data sticker, or get a multimeter out and check what's coming out of it

Or buy from Takealot on a decent daily deal - NEVER at the normal list price...

Did you DIY the batteries together into a 4x pack?

Thanks.

30 months for an R800 outlay is pretty good imo.

If you bored and feel like a project, I made a battery backup that powers my router + fibre box and well anything you plug into it. I bought the following :
a plastic waterproof clip box for easy access
in line fuse
40amp 12v battery (chose 40amp because its not too heavy)
2x 12v DC cigarette lighter, mounted one each side.
some wire

Now I can use 12v DC, and I can also use AC when I plug my little invertor (like a camping one as it has a cigareete lighter attachment on it) which is half the size of a tissue box and its 150w. I plug my modems etc into that and have run my fibre for like the whole day. When I want to charge the battery I use the same charger I use for my car, its a Optimate 6.

Yep. I carefully pulled the spot-welded ribbon wires from the old battery pack, then soldered the new cells in. Just be careful that none of the wires touch another one while working...

The data sheet shows both AC and DC. We need a picture of your ONT power brick sticker.
I actually had to use a magnifying glass and a torch to read it, it's branded in to the plastic and extremely difficult to read.

I think I might actually go the full UPS route.
Something like this. I know it's kind of overkill but whatever...

That's not designed to keep anything running for more than a couple of minutes. It's possible to hack it to get it to work (adding bigger batteries etc), but the 12V lithium options (Ratel / Gizzu etc) are far superior solutions for loadshedding backup.

It's only to run a router and ONT.

I bought a Vizia UPS (similar to Gizzu) but ONT doesn't like it, I'm assuming it's because it works on AC power.

Maybe best way to get the assumption out of the way is to stick a multimeter on it?
