:D Watching this with great interest. I restored my phone back to Stock ICS this weekend, rooted and installed JKay Deluxe. Does everything I want, with some nice tweaks, and with the Samsung camera and FM Radio working perfectly. Add Apex launcher Pro to the mix, and we're away!

I do miss Google Now - can't wait for Samsung to release the 4.1 update to make that official. Once we have that the custom ROMs will probably use that as a base to get it up to 4.2 with less hassle than 4.0->4.1.

For now, however, I am going to let my phone be a phone. :) (Until the bug bites again)
 
SO... I need some help,
I have just spent the better part of 2 hours trying to figure out how to flash correctly.

I have used ODIN before to install ICS on my S2 as I couldnt get the update any other way. Didnt root the phone but, not it has started that irritating "voltage too high issue" and I am hoping that rooting will help.

I understand the process (using ODIN) but am at a loss with how to find the correct kernel and ROM.

Sounds like Rootbox with DorimanX is the way to go... where the hell do I find the images/files? I have the new DorimanX but cant get the rootbox img??

I know this is noob but XDA is helluva confusing!

since your are noob. just install jKay deluxe and use dorimanX kernel. stay away from custom roms for now until you know more.

Take a look at this link for rooting your S2.

You use the same Odin method to root your phone. The right kernel, is the one that corresponds with your build number, i.e. the one kernel that ends with 'LP7'. Now that your phone is rooted...

You can boot into CWM recovery. You should now backup your phone, choose that option in CWM. (you will also need to backup your apps using Titanium Backup, an app, before flashing a brand new ROM).

Before you flash your new ROM, download the DorimanX and Rootbox files, transfer them to a place on your phone where you will remember them to be. Boot into CWM, wipe data (don't worry about something going wrong - since you now have CWM and a backup of your current ROM state, you can always flash it back very easily. You can always access Clock Work Mod recovery), wipe cache partition, install zip from sd card (I think you will need to choose 'install zip from internal sd'), select your Rootbox file where you placed it, wait for it to complete, and then flash your DorimanX file the same way. I always wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik and fix permissions at this point, before I choose to 'reboot phone' in CWM.

After reboot, restore only user apps with Titanium Backup.

You should now be ready to go...

Have a look at my extended steps for flashing a brand new ROM. If anybody would like to graciously suggest an improvement to the list, please tell me :)

If anyone thinks I made a mistake otherwise, please correct me ASAP :)

But if you do feel too unsure, this is good advice also!

In the beginning, I must add, I did feel poepbang, but I made it through, and felt like a super hacker dude afterwards. Nevermind that I am not really a super hacker dude.

I felt so scared first time, get less with each flash but still nerve racking.

With Android phones from the past 2 year, I believe it is very hard to brick your phone. So with regards to flashing, I am actually not scared one bit anymore. There is no reason to be...(just make backups ;) )

One must just check with your particular phone...I know one must first flash a different kernel prior to other flashing with the Galaxy Note.

I'm always terrified factory reset/data wipe clears my internal SD card...

LOL...it does give a jolty feeling when doing it, hey? :o

You can always copy your whole phone's content to your pc, if that makes you feel better.

But it just wipes the data from the ROM state; all data on the external and internal SD card are always kept fully and equally intact.

Copy to PC via USB and then you don't need to worry about that anymore. Best tool for Android in my opinion is Titanium Backup. I swear by it. Also do CWM or Nandroid backup before flashing anything.

I am no techno doofus but this stuff gets hecticly complicated.

I will download all the apps/files you have mentioned and just do a proper backup. I like the notion that battery life may be better...

It would also be great to get rid of all the bloatware on the phone. The charging issue has since fixed itself but I am still going to try flash the thing!

We are all here to help, lloydkayak. My extended steps I posted earlier might seem more intimidating than it is.

Battery life is better, and phone is MUCH faster.

In my opinion, getting phone rooted is the most important thing, because then you can backup your phone and do whatever else you want. Just follow the instructions on the cf-root web page very closely and ask if you need. Even if it takes you long to do due to being careful...it took me half a day the first time I did it because I was double-checking everything...now I (and all the other veterans here) do it in 5 minutes. :)

This was all very intimidating for me too in the beginning and I work in IT. The problem is that there are so many different articles out there that have slightly different instructions on how to do the same thing that it can really confuse a newbie. Add the fact that you don't want to brick your phone and this isn't a good combination.

I've got the basics down now, but I'm still pretty clueless on how everything actually works.

Good luck and just post here with any questions if you are unsure of anything, there are plenty of seasoned pros here :)
 
I am battling to find the Rootbox ROM.

The CM Roms also seem great. thinking either CM9 or 10? will these then work with the Dorimanx kernal (seems to be very good).

As I understand I flash the kernal, then go through the whole process again to flash the ROM.

I will get the relevant zip files then go painstakingly through the xda thread you linked
 
I am looking for a super stable ROM and kernal that will allow better batt life and speed because I can control the "samsung defined" running apps!

Rootbox and Dorimanx seemed to be this...

Maybe CM is better?

I use CM10 nightlies, and they work great for me...I used to experiment with different ROMS and kernels, but now I just easily flash the latest CM10 nightly, and you don't need to follow those extended steps after you've flashed the first one. Then, you just boot into CWM, flash zip, and reboot. Voila. You are rid of all bloatware, and you can freeze or uninstall any app you wish with Titanium Backup (just be careful of freezing system apps, and don't uninstall them!)

The 'seasoned pros' over here (LOL OGroteKoning) will discern the slightest of speed improvement of the Rootbox ROM and Dorimanx kernel combo over CM10, but let me tell you, CM10 is very fast and very stable. Don't fret with the Dorimanx kernel yet...just flash the CM10 ROM, it comes with its own kernel, and it's very good as well. When you too become a 'seasoned pro', you can start flashing kernels (although it is just as easy as flashing a ROM or anything else). You have even greater certainty over stability with the kernel CM10 comes with, and for now, I suspect this is what you'll want. Cyanogenmod (CM10) is also the most widely used ROM, so you can be sure of great support from the forums. (that's not to say it is the 'best' ROM, that is up to personal preference). But it is fast, stable, and light.

After you have rooted with CF-root (that's the XDA link I posted before), look at the above url's. Read the first one, the second one is just to download the ROM (choose the latest nightly, that's the most updated one).
