So anyway, i chose Rootbox. I see he's implemented the Paranoid hybrid tablet UI, which is always interesting. I especially like the Mail interface. The rest seems perfect.

Using the stock kernel isn't so impressive, benchmarks are low and it isn't too smooth, but atleast the wifi connection doesnt seem so slow and keeps dropping (like with Dorimanx 7.4). So i'm going to try the new Siyah 5 b2.

Anyone care to comment on RR3.1.0?

EDIT: Seems like Dorimanx made some fixes for WIFI in 7.4.1.

Remember guys, the main difference to these two ROMs is that RootBox is vanilla, and RR is bloated much more(although less than stock), so Rootbox has NO apps that come with it, not even Gmail/playstore. So you have to flash Gapps separately. And now the Paranoid settings obviously, which works amazing on hybrid dpi225 for me btw.

I was in RR from 3.0.2-3.0.9 and then on Rootbox 2.9 and 3.0. Rootbox is more stable than RR and has less glitches, and Bajee updates and fixes problems very quickly. So my vote goes to rootbox .

Try 7.4.1 before you go to 5b2, I had some SODs on 5b2.

Oh, and 150mb vs 400mb to download.

I did a clean install of RR 3.1.0 today. So far so good but too soon to tell. RR 3.0.9 was becoming very slow and buggy so I hope they refined it a bit. I am also trying out dorimax kernel now instead of the siyah kernel which I was using for v3.0.6 -> v3.0.9.

Will report back when I've used it a bit longer.
 
RR 3.0.9 ended up quite slow and laggy for me as well - I was on Dorimanx 5.89 and 5.90 - the battery was OK but I just couldn't handle the lag with balanced kernel settings especially with my swiftkey keyboard. On my Galaxy S the keyboard was quicker than with 3.0.9

- so I've now switched to Jellybam after hearing some good things about it - well right off the bat it is smoother than JB RR ever was for me. That was on the stock CM kernel too. Now I've flashed to Dori 7.4.1 with Mali and its even better! Will have to cycle the battery to see what I get but I'm sure its good too. So all in all pretty happy with Jellybam. I wanted to go with Rootbox but in the end I tried jellybam - I will try and dual boot RB with Siyah to see what its like. But yeah from my side so far Jellybam is a pleasurable experience for any one whose curious :)

Thanks for the feedback. If RR 3.1.0 fails I will give Jellybam a try.
 
So out of interest, and in the spirit of nostalgia, I flashed WanamLite's 4.0.4 ROM. Which kernel is best for ICS? DorimanX 7.2 doesn't boot. I'm currently running it on Siyah 3.5.2, as it was the only one I have sitting on my phone.

No problem - let us know how RR 3.1.0 works out too - 3.0.9 wasn't too bad just the slight lag on the kb was killing me. 3.1.0 with Mali might be pretty good.

Well Dorimanx and Siyah the most popular ones - Dorimanx is based on Siyah though it can be experimental at times, he tries some cutting edge stuff but he does pick up on bugs pretty quickly and attempts to sort them out. Its what I've been using for a while now and its pretty stable and the battery life is OK. I haven't used Siyah for a while but it was rock stable when I did use it and balanced in terms of performance/battery. The dual boot worked for me with Siyah, didn't work with Dori 5.x and is not available in 7.x so far. I haven't tried out other kernels on xda yet, maybe someone here has some experience!

What launcher are you using?

So far so good on my side btw. Phone been on since yesterday, still responsive, and battery sitting at 74% since this mornings charge.
 
Went back to my MIUI and Siyah Kernel. CM has too many things running in the background and check it out.

So much smoother and battery lasts so mucccch longer. Almost got a 5er.

Been back on cm 9.1 stable for about a week now, and it's going well. It is stable which is nice, battery life is pretty good, but there appear to be a few kernel wake locks that are inherent in the rom, and they chew up a fair bit of juice.
 
Sort of a step away from ROMS, but has anyone managed to allow the S2 to connect to ad-hoc networks using ICS? My Ubuntu machine won't let me setup an AP, so it has to be ad-hoc... :cry:
 
Well, I have a confession to make...

It has been nearly a month and I haven't even rooted my phone yet.

The default 4.0.3 is everything I need and later in November 4.1.x will be released for the S2, so there is no need for me to flash a rom on this beaut of a phone at this stage. The only downside is, of course, poor Linux support, but I'm used to that.

My tablet is also gathering dust, this phone has now become my default everything and I no longer need my tablet as before.

I also refrained from rooting my 4.0.3 phone, cos I know Jelly Bean is on its way & my DSTV Drifta app hates a rooted phone.

If you want to have a preview of what Jelly Bean will be like, download Nova Launcher. ;)

I'll be using Nova till we get the official JB ROM for South Africa.
