Samsung Galaxy S8

I took the plunge and did the update.
My reaction so far is lukewarm.
There aren't many changes, and I don't see much of a difference between Oreo and Nougat.
Perhaps with more hands-on usage I will discover some hidden gems.

@Ciferion, is there any downside to flashing my S8 with this non-carrier specific firmware instead of waiting for the official Vodacom firmware? Will it change anything that'll void the warranty on the device? It's obviously intended for a different country. Would I still be able to flash it with the proper one when Vodacom do release it?
Nope... you still flashing official Samsung Firmware. You dont have to root your device to do that, so you are not changing any file systems or messing with Knox. As far as i can remember, it wont cause any issues with your warranty, and you can flash the carrier firmware again.

So basically my phone has been stuck on slow charging for a couple of weeks. At first I thought it was the cable. Tried my sisters charger and cable no go still slow charging so I tried my brother in laws s9 cable and charger which is exactly the same as the s8 and still no go.

Always slow charging saying I should use the charger and cable provided with the device. Also can not transfer any files from my pc to my device via usb cable Windows is disabling the USB with an error saying there is a short on the USB plug and they have been disabled for safety reasons and only get them working after restarting....

What you guys thing actual port on the phone busted?

Is the below enabled?

Settings - Battery - Menu - Advanced Settings - Fast Cable Charging

Yes all enabled. It fast charges wireless but not fast charging on cable. Can not connect it via cable to pc at all. Started happening about 4 week back. Tried other cables but nothing. My cable and plug fast charges other phones but not mine.

I wanted to see if I can update the firmware with odin and see if that fixes it but does not connect to pc....

That does sound like port damage. You might want to get it looked at...

Sigh still under warranty but Vodacom will probably take ages and would probably need to explain it at the store......

Yeah looks like the port is broken. It's creating a short causing the type c connector to get hot when plugged into the charger and into my phone. The actual port and connector is getting very hot but not the phone it's still stuck on slow charging....

Plugging the phone into the pc with any cable even my micro b to type c adapter it's still shorting...

@Cavedog: This may seem silly but check in the port with a light if dirt got in. Happened to my fathers phone, took into samsung and they literally pulled out like fluff that got compacted into it and wasnt allowing it to fast charge as it wasnt fully seated.

I had that thought, but that wouldn't explain the short problem when plugging into a computer. If anything, it might suspect that the water resistance could have failed and the port then short circuited after getting wet.

@Dave: Did you check, because the cable is still not reaching the end technically if there is dirt. Take a toothpick and see with a torch. Literally nothing to lose.

I just cleaned it. The amount of dirt in that port I was shocked. I did not even notice it at all even when I used a torch. Will test it again and report back.

I know you shouldn't use compressed air but the port is sealed to be water resistant so I used compressed air with a regulated air blower to gentrly blow out the loose dirt I picked with the tooth pick.

Going to test it but I hope that was the issue not keen on giving my s8 in and waiting 1 month.

About firmware updates.

I've noticed both XFA and XFE has now received Oreo in South Africa. Just not XFV (Vodacom) yet. What is it they're actually doing that it's taking so long to push the update out? Cannot be just because of testing surely? Do they customize it the way they like to or something also?

And about testing it, is it all that necessary? Do all mobile service providers always test firmware that, in my opinion, should have been tested by Samsung in the first place already? I just like to know the process somewhat.

In the end it does not really bother me so much, because I could just manually install the update myself if it did, but this is interesting to me now. My estimation is that Vodacom will push it out sometime this week, or next week, anyway, looking at their history of roll out dates.

^ Thanks for the reminder - checked for updates and the OTA came through now on MTN

Any noticeable improvements?

Battery life etc?
Hard to say, saw some new stuff, haven't spent much time playing with it yet.
Had some app crashes (s-health this morning), not sure if it's related.

I don't believe this testing story.
Had volte and wifi calling issues, a while back, with my Note 8. Their excuse... we busy testing!
Over and over again, they gave me this excuse.
After +- 3 mths it was discovered that my no volte etc, was a technical admin error and fixed the error .
Testing is just a excuse.
Then...
Note 8 Oreo, also only has XFE.
No XFV.
