Dropped my phone like 30cm from the floor and screen is smashed... :cry:

I have not. But I did figure it out. It's called Smart view and it's built into the os. One can use it to miracast to windows 10, no additional software required.

It's pretty cool, and now with Oreo the screen on the phone automatically goes dark in order to save battery. Will post more info later.

Camera problem:

I noticed that most time I'm unable to use video recording. The button is just grayed out. I can still take photos though. Only way so far to fix this issue is to restart the phone, then I'm able to record again. This pretty much happens all the time. I have 34GB of storage left available, and have tried clearing the cache for the camera app.

I once got a notification that said: "Unable to record video during a call". Obviously I was not on a call. Only got that notification once.

Any ideas?

Fixed it. It was caused by an app (Play Store app), after I forced stopped it, the camera works fine again. Guess that app hijacks the phone.

Has anyone that applied the oreo update to their MTN S8's had an issue with the power button?
My dad's phone won't turn the screen off with a single short press anymore, he says since the update.
Double-tap still opens camera, and long press still brings up the power off options.
I don't find any options in the settings menu that may affect it.

I have powered off, but the problem still persists! Any ideas?

The current build is CRB7 and baseband is CRAP (sic).

I am downloading the XFA firmware from Sammobile, and I'll try reflash the firmware to see if it solves the problem.

Updated to Oreo on Telkom Mobile

When I double tap the power buttons to launch camera. Once in a while when it launches the camera it also launches my SOS, sent my emergency contacts my location, a 5 second audio recording and pictures from the front and back camera.
 
Problem solved by factory reset and reflash Oreo ROM...
Pain in the @$$, but I couldn't find a setting to control the behaviour anywhere.

The SOS feature works with 3 presses. Maybe you just press it once too many? The camera is 2. And my medical aid app (discovery) is 5 presses SOS feature.

Did the OTA the Thursday before Easter Weekend. No issues. I just have a constant issue with the camera's focus. If I do not use it for a while, I have to focus it on something really close for a few seconds before it will focus on what ever I am taking a picture.
 
Dropping off my S8 to have the screen replaced today, R8800.00 with platinum repairs in Rivonia. Discovery preffered provider, they assessed the phone last week and came to the conclusion that the battery is fine and does not need to be replaced. Will post feedback once done.

Will drop off around 9 this morning and pick up around 12.

Fingers crossed they don't mess this up.

R8800 to replace a screen?
 
Yes that was the quote that platinum repairs submitted to Discovery Insure for a Samsung S8+ 64GB. DIscovery called me and said they will process the claim and I need to take the phone in today. The phone fell on its side which took most of the impact but there was 2 cracks that ran across the screen at the bottom was not that bad but it was irritating. It got worse when I put the phone in a friends cars cupholder and as I went over a bump on the road I heard the sound of cracking glass I thought it was the windscreen but it came from lower down and I looked at the fone and saw the cracks expanded.

will go collect it at 12 and will report back on the work carried out by Platinum Repairs.
 
Just picked up the phone and pretty decent job feels so much better without that screen crack. Looks similar to the old screen in terms of the quality just feels more slippery though but I was assured its a genuine Samsung Screen, any idea how one could tell if its not?

No idea how you'd be able to tell but perhaps it's more slippery because the oleophobic coating is new vs a bit worn down on the old screen?

I wonder how much the S8+ is worth right now?

R8800 should be enough for the ensure to have written off the phone and just paid out for a new one.

Guess it's all down to how much the phone was valued at, which is probably closer to double the R8800. The pains of owning expensive Flagships.

This makes me worry about if I drop and break my Note8.


When I damaged my Galaxy S3 back in early 2013, insurance took it in for assessment at a phone repair preferred by them, within a few hours of the phone arriving they came back and said they will pay out for a new one, take note this was a phone where the Display Glass had broken but still worked just fine.

I have no Idea. Its Discovery Prefferred Provider BTW my new review about them is stay away from them. Phone is now heating up much more than before and also constantly loosing signal I reported this to Discovery and they took it up to the provider who tells me they need the phone in for 2 days to assess it.

I think it would have been less of a hassle and might have been cheaper if it went to Samsng directly.
 
Getting an S8 second hand. I'm notroiously good at cracking my screen. any covers you could suggest?
