Sim Sonke

Cant you just switch your prepaid plan to simsonke instead of buying a simsonke smartcard?

You can switch to sim sonke from 8ta more. You are however not able to change your price plan at all if you are on PSB Data priceplan.

Any free data?

Not necessarily you might want to consider 8ta more then. You can use the free airtime for data @ a charge for R1 per mb. However if you get free airtime with sim sonke which is not very often since they give free minutes you can use the free airtime @ 29c per mb.

So its a 50/50 between the 2.

how long does it take to switch from 8ta more to sim sonke? My contract just converted to prepaid today, and they put me on 8ta more by default :/

I have done that prior to asking how long it takes, because after doing it, it seems like I am still on 8ta more. That is why I am interested to know how long it takes to change over after following that USSD menu.

Hi Tinuva

Please PM the affected number for us to check which tariff plan you are using currently.

Tinuva - I had the same problem to convert once 8ta more to Sim Sonke, could only do it the following month but did follow up with the call centre they told me they had a problem with their system

Woah that was seriously fast response from Telkom Mobile to follow up. Super impressed by the support from TelkomMobile :)

Tinuva - did they manage to resolve the problem
Not yet, but they also said I should give it 24-72hours. The same happened when I asked why my account is still stuck on contract even though cancellation was already sent in 2nd of May. And that did resolve within the then 24-72hours. Annoying that it takes that long every time, but it does seem to get fixed eventually every time.

If it is not fixed by 72 hours from the call, then I will obviously get really annoyed and throw my toys. However thus far I have mostly had a pleasant time with TelkomMobile, and I joined them in 2012 May 12th.

ok update.

In just less than 24 hours later, I received an sms about topping up air time to buy bundles. Checking again I am now on the Sim Sonke price plan. Thus my issue did get resolved.

Thus I can say, I am still a happy camper on the TelkomMobile network :)

I can't remember if I asked this, don't think I got a response either, but is it still possible to go out and buy one of the internet starter packs, then port my existing mobile number to it, and change the tariff to Sim Sonke?

Yes. Buy IS, RICA and tell the attendant that you want port your number. You will be advised to not open a package yet. Use the old SIM till it stops working. Then insert your new SIM and change a tariff as you wish.

On contract, make sure that your account is not in areas, otherwise porting will fail.

No longer needed. You can now buy the "Internet Staterpack Bundles" if you are on Telkom More price plan. So move to Telkom More price plan. Buy the bundle you wish to have. You can also buy more than one and simply migrate back to Sim Sonke price plan. ;)
