Skyfi WISP

I am indeed. The local sites/streams are fine, but international is a bit of an issue. Support in general is much better though.

Anyone in the Brackenhurst area experiencing problems with their Skyfi Conection from about Tuesday?

Hey everyone. I would definitely stay away from Skyfi. I have been with them since August 2016. I had fantastic internet for 3 months and since then have received substandard connectivity. For the last 2 months i have had an upload of between 0.01 - 0.05Mbs and a download of anything between 6mb - 14mb. I am currently on 10mb account with them. I stay in Verwoerdpark area. The latency is pretty good when the connection is up, however I have been experiencing very unstable synchronization to their high site.

I have had to call them between 3 - 5 days a week to reset and re sync my dish to their high site. I have been waiting for over a month for a technician to come through to address the upload issue without success despite having spoke to 6 different people and leaving countless messages at the office.

The sad thing is that the R4k you spend on the hardware upfront is useless if you cancel with them so you are kind stuck with them.

Call center support staff are always polite and try to help but it appears that their technical team and escalation procedures are seriously lacking.

I have been unable to use my line for email, gaming, skype, and most importantly remote sessions for work which makes paying the R740 bucks a month pretty moot. I can download files but even that is inconsistent and 60% of the time fails due to connection drops / link instability. ADSL was my first go to but Telkom do not have ports available and are not upgrading for some time in our area.

This may come across as mudslinging but I have been more than patient with these guys always tried to be polite and friendly but i'm past my wits end.

Hope this helps people not get trapped as I have.

I have had the worst experience with Skyfi.

It is the most useless, backward company. They do not communicate with each other and they take forever to do anything (if at all).

I get the impression that they are just a bunch of high school kids playing with wireless equipment.

The messed up the installation, they messed up the connection and they even messed up the invoicing - I honestly cannot believe this company is in business.

To everyone here - stay away from these morons, they will just cost you money, time and a constant headache.
You will get more support and service from your local KFC.

Hi

Can anyone assist with the settings for the router? I factory reset the router by accident.

Their office line stays engaged.

Thanks

Sorry, if I had seen this earlier I would have helped. Unfortunately at work now.

My Skyfi has been off the whole night - apparently the high-site is having issues. Don't know how long it's going to be down for.

These guys are seriously testing my resolve.

My connection has been unstable for a week and nobody gives a ****. Emails get ignored, phone calls go to voicemail and "management" gets back to you just as you would expect management from Telkom to get back to you - never. I am so frustrated I don't know what to do with myself. I reckon it is a matter of time before I go back to my ****ty 4mb line and tell these guys to go **** themselves. Over it.

Hi guys, does anyone know if SkyFi's wireless is symmetrical?

No it's not. On a good day when there are no issues and the stars have aligned to give me a proper connection I will get about 25mb/s down but never as much up. I will get maybe 15 up if I am lucky.

Hi, Is there someone in Elspark area that got Skyfi-wifi?
The Telkom Exchange is old and very slow. (lot of headaches) So I'm looking into Skyfi-wifi.

If you could, rather look into www.fibrestream.co.za - save yourself some headaches. The service provided by Skyfi is getting better, but it is nowhere where it should be. I sit with crap/no service at least one day a week. Save yourself the heartache and try someone else. Heard good things about fibrestream and their prices are as low as Skyfi's.

So, to back this statement up here is my experience since Monday.

On Monday evening I noticed my speeds getting a little wonky - nothing serious but dropping below the 15mb threshold that I believe points to something being wrong. It was quite late so I didn't bother too much with it. On Tuesday I worked from home, but had issues with my VPN, so couldn't exactly tell whether there was anything sinister going on with my connection. Tuesday evening however is a different story then the connection basically timed out. I couldn't even get to speedtest in order to do a test to prove that something was going on.

So I did what I was told to do in these situations, I emailed support telling them something was up with either my connection or the high site. Switch off PC and enjoy a movie with the wifey. Wednesday morning I get a couple of notifications that my call has been merged with another call, so I assume they are working on it. So I go to work and look forward to playing some games with my buds, seeing as I haven't played the whole week. Get home on Wednesday and the connection is K@K. Basically zero throughput. So I call Skyfi.

Here is what happens next...
I get told the connection will be investigated and they will get back to me. I notice my connection dropping a couple of times the next 30 - 45 minutes - so at least I know they are working on it. My cell phone rings, so I pick up and its Skyfi - there is something wrong at the high site, they will send out a tech to the high site tomorrow (today) to have a look at what is going on.

So my question:
Why on earth if something is wrong at the high site do I have to report it from the client side? Surely there are monitoring tools, etc. that should tell them something is wrong? And more worryingly:
Why if I had logged the call on Tuesday already has nobody noticed there was something wrong at the high site, and why wait until I phone before you look at my connection?

These okes are stealing my money...

I just called Fibrestream because I had some questions over their coverage map. I spoke with Wes who happens to be the MD of the company (not sure why he's picking up sales calls but anyway). There's a highsite 1km from me and their offering is pretty spectacular. No FUP/AUP, guaranteed synchronous up and down speeds with a 1:1 contention ratio for outstanding prices. The 10Mbps offering is R799 per month.

A once off setup fee of R3299 is a little steep but you're buying the equipment rather than renting so I'm ok with it.

In addition to that, when one of their fibre partners (eventually) comes to my area, they'll move me over to one of their fibre offerings at no extra charge. If I'm willing to allow them to reclaim the Wifi equipment they'll switch it out for a fibre router and include installation.

Just need to convince the wife that this is the way to go and then I'll sign up. I'll keep this thread updated with progress, thought and opinions...

Thanks to Slaught3r for suggesting them!!

Wesley is also on our whatsapp group. Couple of people on there using their services and not many complaints. I think it is better to start a new thread though, if you want to keep us posted, as this is the Skyfi  thread.

Also, find out from Wesley if they don't have a 2nd hand kit from a previous subscriber @ a better price or find out what equipment you need to get and look on www.carbonite.co.za if you can't find it there for cheaper. I know they don't really mind using "used" equipment, unless they struggle with your connection.
