Hello everyone, first post the forums.
Can someone please help me sort out this problem:
I'm a n00b when it comes to irc so please have some patience. The thing is when I try to download from XDCC bots my downloads are slow, as in <2kB/s slow.
I have opened up the following ports on my router:
6667 for chat
4090 - 4095 for DCC
as well as 113 for ident and 59 for DCC server.
Is this correct? Do I really need all these open ports?
I'm using Telkom internet btw, 512k line.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi mp man ;)

Check out www.portforward.com to make sure which ports you have to forward.

Also, I wouldn't advise downloading via IRC, it's bound to be slow. In the old days, I used XDCC as well and barely completed downloads of 10mb, so it's useless really.

Rather use Frostwire (freeware limewire) or get Bearshare or some other P2P application, torrents are good as well, but you need plenty of seeds (guys who share the file).

Hope you get sorted bro ;)

DCC is normally slow, try increasing your bit rates to 8192 in IRC and to (I think) enable DCC pump

DCC is so 1999 dude...

I also have a similer problem.

Although I hav't set anything yet on my router, I get speeds that range from 0.79kbps to 11kbps.

What could I do to increase the speed to at least 14kbps?

I'm with Sainet at the moment by the way, 6gb shaped.
On their trial, I got the 14kbps that I was looking for.
Since switching over to my bought account, I get lower speeds.

I'm using a Billion 5102S ADSL Modem/Router.

AcidRaZor, DCC may be 1999, but thats where I get a lot of good stuff to download :)

I've yet to try the news servers though.

Remember that any port except for port 25/445/110/80/21 etc are lower priority than any other port.

The reason why its so slow could also be because they shape the **** out of it. DCC is a 1 to 1 connection, meaning you have 1 thread downloading @ x.

If you download from any source connected with more than 5 threads, you can see a considerable amount of speed increase. This is why torrents are so popular for P2P type transfers for big files. You literally get 100's of threads download simultaneously, they can shape the **** out of your ports, but if you have a 100 connections doing 0.1kb/s it means you're downloading much faster than you could have with only 1 measly thread going.

No amount of port forwarding or tweaking from your side would help prevent this.

Try torrents. I'm sure the file you want to get is available elsewhere other than IRC

If only things were that simple, AcidRaZor :/

Still does't explain while the Trail Access performed better speeds than the actual account.

Even now, when I download off IRC I have to babysit it since it times out after awhile.

Mabey I should have gotten unshaped after all. :/

My biggest problem is, most of this stuff will only appear on BT when it's been completely released. Even then, the Cape Town Boys will download it before me since they have uncapped and faster lines. Meh.

Would I have the same problem if I used a unshaped account?

Man, that does't help me out at all.

All that Sainet tells me is that it's not them that does it, all they do is give out access and not control the speed.

Found the problem. It's a Mirc setting that I have no idea how to solve.

using TurboIRC, I get good speeds of 14kbps and above (even hitting 37kbps if I let it). While Mirc just gets a max of 8kbps and drops to 0.89kbps sometimes.

So give that a try.

Xchat also works well. It can even resume downloads. TurboIRC can't resume at all, sadly.
