The only tricky thing most people miss(who is oblivious to email) to getting Gmail working in Outlook is that in your account you have to have "POP enabled for all mail" otherwise you wont be able to recieve any mail. And Gmail uses the SSL port for its incoming.
 
smtp down

Vodacom smtp still broken recieved some selftest mail but then it stopped again. :mad:

155 Technical support just confirmed that smtp e-mail is still broken. :mad:

I can ping it but it still pongs. (Ag nee sies man):rolleyes:

Vodacom smtp server

There must be thousands of e-mails stuck on this server. What are the hardware specs on this server & what operating system is it running. 1 Machine for pop & smtp ???? No 2 seperate IP's thank goodness for that.

It must be working it's gwava off.:eek:

If you are using a email client such as Outlook Express isn't it possible to set the pop3 server as Vodacom and the smtp server as Gmail (provided you have a Gmail account) using your Gmail login and password for authentication?:confused:

I don't have VC mail so I can't test this theory out.

While I think some of the delays was due to caching during the problem period, imposing delays in delivering mail is nowadays often used to prevent spam.

The receiving server will not accept the incoming mail the first time, if it does not know the sending server. The sending server will retry and then the mail will go through. This is called grey-listing, afaik.

Since spammers normally don't retry failed deliveries, it cuts out a lot of initial spam.
 
I know the very basics concept of email and how it works, but is it really possible for mail to just... vanish? Recieved test mails from a customer i helped yesterday this morning. But he also said that most mails he sent never reached their destinations.

Nothing is impossible. All things being equal it shouldn't happen. Emails I sent during the AM period also didn't reach there destination. This kind of problem hardly ever ever happens.

O by the way I was just told by a family member that works at a corporate managment desk using outlook + exchange with delgation setup between 4 users could see how mail went into the inbox similtaneously on all 4 workstations & to seconds later see how they just disappear right in front of there eyes. They had to change all passwords, to stop the funny etc. Was it a hacker or a Virus that nobody knows of yet, including VC. :eek:

This service is either down or there is a major delay in sending of mail. I have now been waiting for an email I sent to myself. :eek:

155 says they have heard of it. The lights aren't flashing red yet so it isn't that urgent, yet, but they are taking note of it.:eek:

I concur, smtp.vodacom.co.za appears to be constipated again. Someone didn't have their all-bran this morning.
