Telkom 8 Mbps ADSL trial

Omg 8mb fails!!!!

The first couple of hours were fun and downloads were quick but I haven't been able to play a single round of MW2 in the last 3 days... It constantly looses the connection to the lobby and trying to join friend's games just gives me "attempting to join server#1, 2, 3, 4, etc." and then fails. None of my friends are having problems. I sat staring at the "Show statistics" page in my Netgear tonight and my line dropped quite a few times for a second or so.

I'm calling telkom tomorrow to tell them to put me back down to 4mb as this is driving me mad. Maybe I am the only one but for me 8mb fails badly!

Can you share with us your line attenuation stats ? Here is mine from my Netgear Router

Line Attenuation 13 db 2.5 db
Noise Margin 18 db 14 db

Hey Kilos, only saw this now. As requested:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8032 kbps 635 kbps
Line Attenuation 35.0 db 19.8 db
Noise Margin 13.3 db 13.3 db

I tried to get them to downgrade me today but they gave me some crap about nobody on duty with the authority to do it so I have to wait till monday... sigh, very annoyed with this crap line now. @ 4meg my line rocks, @ 8 it fails.

Line Attenuation figure is abit high, thats why the problem, problematic line

I wouldn't mind the upgrade, but if the line is unstable, it's pretty frustrating

sigh, finally managed to get them to drop me back down to 4 but my line attenuation is still sitting at 35db :( I'm guessing that because all 4meg lines are now 8 it has somehow affect the attenuation so now my speed doesn't matter... They first dropped me to 3meg and the line att was still 35db.....

Telkom needs to replace certain sections of your line.(impossible)
As I stated in another posting, look for the possible cause.
Is your line noisy , crackiling , mains humm due to induction
or is it due to corrosion

Apply for another line and drop the original noisy one

the frustrating thing is my line was perfect! I used to get 18ms when I played COD4... this whole 8meg thing buggered it up, literally since day 1 of being on 8meg it just sucked....

I would never have even tried to go to 8meg with those line stats. Get them to limit you speed to 6meg and it might be better. Most likely 4meg is the max you can have on that line.

Telkom is ignoring my open invite to test their new product :( :p

My line used to be perfect, I live a few blocks from the exchange and have always had one of the lowest pings when playing online. Only since they bumped me up to 8mbps has my line degraded and now even though I am back on 4mbps it still sucks

So, at the end of the day it wasn't the line...... It was my Netgear.

For some reason I forgot that about the same time as the 8meg upgrade I also updated the firmware on my Netgear, I was busy playing with ways of using traffic splitter and basically messing around. I updated the firmware and forgot all about it, tonight I remembered, found an older firmware version and reflashed my Netgear. Problem solved. My line attenuation and SNR is still exactly the same (35db and 13.1db) but I am again getting pings as low as 13ms if I join a SGS COD4 server. So looks like I could have stayed with 8meg and it would have worked fine but to be honest I don't actually mind, 4 meg is fine and the extra 4 is overkill for me (and my cap).

So ya, 8mbps doesn't fail, Netgear's firmware fails :) .... and so does my memory cos I completely forgot about updating the modem.

the 8mb line will be fairly useless without a complementing increase in the bandwidth available. Telkom should increase the 5gig accounts to a minimum of 15gig. with atleast 30gig local still.

over there behind the shed next Thursday between 1:45pm and 1:30 pm

And it's only for the first 10 customers who apply.

And you need to have been a member of mybb for the last 3 months and have 1000 posts to go with.

And did i mention that the selection process will be totally random and done using a dartboard?

And if you pay us an additional R 99 a month we will give you an additional speed upgrade for FREE!

And last but not least. The rules will be made up as I go along.

:D

The Telkom/SAIX notice board confirms the ADSL speed upgrades. A recent notice relating to the Constantia Park IMAX which took place over the weekend reads: “Implementation of the 8 Meg trial. All current 4 Meg customers on the 4 Meg sync profile will be upgraded to the 8 Meg sync profile”

Tight lipped, of course. So, 4Mbps users get their line speeds increased to 8Mbps "free of charge". What about 384kbps users? What do we get?

Telkom is tight lipped about the 8 Mbps ADSL trials, but did say that they are investigating higher ADSL speeds. “As part of our on-going drive to improve our product and service offerings to customers, Telkom is currently investigating improvements to its ADSL speeds. This includes the possibility of upgrading our 4Mbps offering to an 8 Mbps service”, said Marius Mostert, Telkom SA’s Managing Executive for Network Infrastructure Provisioning.

There are currently no time frames for a potential upgrade of all Telkom 4 Mbps ADSL subscribers, but Telkom’s executive of strategy Steve Lewis previously said that an early 2010 launch date is expected. He said that while the company’s 8 Mbps ADSL trials were successful, the limited footprint which can support the higher speed is holding a commercial launch back.

When will Telkom replace the country's ageing copper-wire infrastructure with Fibre-Optics, for free? Heck, we pay them enough every month for "line rental" but they do nothing to upgrade the lines! Protest action is coming ...
