Telkom 8 Mbps ADSL trial

I guess this is the next gen network I've been hearing about on the radio that will allow us to do things we have not yet imagined.

Sigh...... I get 2 use WiMax 512 cause my DSL is soooooo **** it never sync's :-/

Some of you guys really give Telkom a hard time, some comments are true others are just from a lack of knowledge. Telkom did not invent ADSL, its a technology that has its boundries. It must work on copper and the length of the copper from the DSLAM is limited to 5KM. The closer you are situated to the DSLAM the faster your line can be. Some of us already cannot have 4mb because of these limitations, not because Telkom is being funny, so goodluck to those who will be able to have 8mb, I am limited to 384k because I live on the border of my exchange area, if they had to scrap 384k many people will not have ADSL because of the technical limitations.

Our neighbourhood has a couple of millionaires, there're at least 40 households utilising some wireless connexion at R1000pm (R3000 for equipment) yet the neighbourhood down the road where you'd be hard pressed to find a pc has adsl.

So excuse me for wishing 1000 plagues upon the leech that is telkom.

Screw this ima develop my own technology

So, for those of us not on 4mb, what will we be upgraded to when this thing is rolled out?

Btw, I'm primarily asking Garyvdh here:p

Called them and asked them to reset my line to 8Mb, and the lady said to me that the 8Mb trial hasn't started yet...So they reset my line, and still on 4Mb :( Hope they will do my line soon...cos i'm on the same exchange as Friggs as far as i can tell...

Don't hope to much, I've been having major problems tonight with my line. I tried joining various MW2 games for almost an hour with no luck, the closest I got was loading the map and then steam would disconnect. Initially thought everyone may be having problems but it was just me. Also my browsing tonight has been hit and miss, have to reload some pages 3 or 4 times before actually getting the page to open. Used both my WA account and my Afrihost account so not isp related. Hope it's temporary cos it's driving me mad!
Guess that's the downside of being part of a trial...

I have no idea. Guys have been asking me for months now... but all I ever knew was that it was going to happen. I have no idea of the actual mechanics of it. Sorry! :p

I did post my guess in another thread... can't remember what I said before... but here goes again...

You have to remember that speeds above 1 mbps are not really profitable for Telkom. Their break even point is 1 mbps. any customers above that point require more Tech Support and more hardware. So it is in Telkom's interest to keep only one segment of the population above 1 mbps.

Fastest = 1 to 8 mbps
Faster = 512 to 1 mbps
Fast = 384 to 512 kbps

So the fastest guys will be at 8 mbps, the middle will be 1 mbps and the slowest will be 512. But that's just my guess. Obviously if you have synch problems you will be at the slower speed in your category. Telkom's way of hedging their bet against the really poor state of their copper network.

by the time LLU happens there may not be much life left in the copper.

Pity you did try
Obviously call center do not know about the 8Mb trial, I am sure they saw the 8Mb sync profile and just did not know what it is for, I wonder how Telkom
choose their trial clients, I am sure it based on LIFO (last in first out) :D
As friggs got his upgrade 3 odd weeks ago from 384k - 4Mb

Surely they selling bandwidth? So the greater the speeds the greater the propensity to sell bandwidth?

Ok, thanks. That isn't what I hoped for but only time will tell.

Yes, that's what I thought as well. But they have to work out if they'll sell enough bandwidth to make up for the reduction in profits from upgrading lines (as pointed out by Garyvdh).

How do I check the attainable rate on the NetGear DG834GUV5 router?

I used to be able to check it on my old Siemens router...

PS: Can I flash the router with any of the DGTeams firmware, if yes, which model number to choose from, as DG834GUV5 doesn't exist?

Well some try give the call center a ring and just be like "Hi, do you have any idea or estimate when the 8mbit trial will being in my area" I would do it myself but im at work at the moment

Damn it, my exchange only supports up to 7200kbps so until it's upgraded I aint going to smell 8mbps!!!!

I did. They don't even know about it. :rolleyes:

Call centre: "Has it started already? We were not briefed on it yet, let me call my supervisor, please hold the line"

Supervisor: "Hi Sir. Unfortunately we have no idea about the 8mb trial but your exchange and number does support 4mb"

Omg 8mb fails!!!!

The first couple of hours were fun and downloads were quick but I haven't been able to play a single round of MW2 in the last 3 days... It constantly looses the connection to the lobby and trying to join friend's games just gives me "attempting to join server#1, 2, 3, 4, etc." and then fails. None of my friends are having problems. I sat staring at the "Show statistics" page in my Netgear tonight and my line dropped quite a few times for a second or so.

I'm calling telkom tomorrow to tell them to put me back down to 4mb as this is driving me mad. Maybe I am the only one but for me 8mb fails badly!
