Why were they given 5 years of exclusive access when the SNO was supposed to start up in that same period

That is the real question! Gubmint sold us down the river [again] looking out for themselves intead of SA. If Telkom has monopoly on SAT3 no-wonder the SNO is in no hurry to get things going.

Actually that's really interesting - because - take it that they did the sums - their stock return and return on profit tax - and gst on phone bills and... you get the picture:telkom is a cash cow for the government - a vehicle for raising money... (they raise money on the initial sale - and reap the profits of a listed company) - a multi win. And as usual a very small percentage of the population is supporting it (the edifice)... double whammy - income tax and phone bills - and... They make more money selling it - holding onto their shares - than if they had of retained control. Why would they possibly want to hold onto SAT3 - a primary asset to telkom - sell it with telkom - maximum return. Look for the sanity in the madness - we've been had.

Am I the only one to read something nefarious in the above statement? I've got this bad feeling that we're being setup for disappointment in the future and all Telkom will do is say: "See? Like we told you before, we can't change anything that wasn't already part of the Agreement. We'd like to provide access at cost and pass on the savings to consumers ... but we can't. Our hands are tied."

Well of course - that's the question - would complete liberalisation of the market yield equal return to the government? Can the market support it (open market free for all - with open leasing on external pipes?) Other governments and countries have done it (but icasa is rewriting the book - all 4 pages.)...

Everybody thinks they're slow (to liberalise) - but - that's the bunny in the hat...

Good news, even though they should have never been given exculsive rights from day 1.

It's only good news when it actually happens. The majority of telecoms announcements in SA are BS. We'll speak again April 2007.
