Telkom drops local ADSL pricing

Are we, apart from China, the only country that has its bandwidth monitored to see what is local and what is from the evil outside ?

What will the cost per GB on Seacom be?

This could be seen as good news as we can carry bandwidth cheaply from Seacom internally, that in turn should cause a great reduction in the overall cost of international bandwidth.

We might see unshaped international bandwidth at a cost of <R30 per GB by the end of the year and <R10 per GB by the end of next year!

Being able to switch between local and international (without the international having to be depleted first) would be awesome (since I work from home a lot of the time...pretty much the only use I have for local).

I'd like to see the ADSL subs stay the same but with the following changes:
- Eliminate the 384kbps connection (upgrade all 384 users to the 512)
- Increase all 1GB caps to 5GB
- Increase all 2GB caps to 7GB
- Increase all 3GB caps to 10GB

Ok - with that though they would have to also introduce a drop in bandwidth cost...dropping from the +/-R70 per gig down to at least half would be nice...but I'd acept R40 per gig for internantional bandwidth.

I still fail to see why there is this need to distinguish between local traffic and international traffic... It feels like someone is making their problem our problem.

When are they going to properly separate international from local?

Also, the way I read it (hopefully incorrectly) is that the additional local bandwidth used will be charged at R15 a gig? Does that mean the packages remain priced the same until you go over your allocated allowance? (e.g do broadband levels 1,2 and whatever?)

You should realise that this definitely won't happen... especially with Telkom. The amount of SEACOM that is owned by Telkom or IS isn't nearly enough to cover that... you should remember that of the 1.28Tbps only about 5-10% will be owned by Telkom, IS or Neotel (Neotel owns 0.38% of that line).

*Yawn*
Local bandwidht pricing isnt going to light up the sky now is it...

ISPs are still sticking to their story of it's difficult to do so on an ISP-level due to the way in which they route their traffic. Currently ISPs buy from SAIX and IS and merely relable the accounts under their own names.

Splitting would mean that they'd have to use uncapped local and intl accounts (which are currently much more expensive than capped accounts) and have two accounts per account sold.

Yeah I know their story (and it's bull**** :() all the ISPs have very advanced and highly capable routers, all of which are capable of directing traffic through different proxies and pipes depending on their routing requirements. It's always been a ploy to sell more international bandwidth packages and oversell existing bundle packages. Hopefully this nonsense stops once we have genuine competition in this space. I won't hold my breath though.

Does ownership really matter with Seacom? The retail price has been published and the cost is fixed for now and it is allot cheaper than Sat 3! Anyone could connect to that retail cost and pass the reductions on to us the consumer.

With more competition the price will drop, I HOPE!

The biggest benefactors of this price decrease will be sme/me that are feel the pinch in these economic times blah blah blah, i think this product is perfectly suited for the following people

SME/ME as previously stated (interbranch communications VPN, VOIP),
the below average income bracket 'cheap' internet they can't afford high cost associated with blended traffic and I'm of the opinion it's more of to get people bitten by the internet bug very soon they will be sitting on forums complaining about high prices of ADSL in SA :D

I don't see how this is exciting news.... the prices were over-inflated in the first place, the caps are too low, and Telkom is simply taking advantage of ICASA's unclear ADSL regulations. There should simply be a flat rate for uncappped local internet. About R100 a month would be reasonable.

For a moment while reading there i thought they were talking about international...

Yeah time will tell with what happens with international (holding thumbs)

Who cares about local anyways. And dont telkom give you 30gig local for free, and then only charge you "if" you go over it. Sounds like a bargain to me.

From what I've heard, yes. This is exactly why Neotel, IS and Telkom has to buy into SEACOM to be able to provide lower costs... and someone has to pay for that $650m cable.
