Telkom drops local ADSL pricing

Being able to switch between local and international (without the international having to be depleted first) would be awesome (since I work from home a lot of the time...pretty much the only use I have for local).

I'd like to see the ADSL subs stay the same but with the following changes:
- Eliminate the 384kbps connection (upgrade all 384 users to the 512)
- Increase all 1GB caps to 5GB
- Increase all 2GB caps to 7GB
- Increase all 3GB caps to 10GB

Ok - with that though they would have to also introduce a drop in bandwidth cost...dropping from the +/-R70 per gig down to at least half would be nice...but I'd acept R40 per gig for internantional bandwidth.

Why on earth would you think that the above is acceptable?

1. This pathetic less than 1Mbps connection is unacceptable.
2. A 4Mbps connection (that actually achieves 4Mbps) is where broadband should actually start.
3. 8Mbps+ should also be available, all with "unlimited access" (at a cost) but with an Acceptable Usage Policy (AUP) of 50-100Gb/month as the minimum.
4. The minimum "international cap" on a capped account should be approximately 30Gb (and yes, this is realistic) and there should be no additional cost for local bandwidth at all.

Lastly, why are you willing to settle for something so far behind what is actually appropriate with current technology if the large corporations weren't trying to just violate the consumer all the time?

Its not really a price reduction. Its still costing me the same! It will only cost me less if I use up my 30GB local (which I never do as the saix news servers suck so much) and then Telkom will start charging me.

I'm a telkom ADSL level 1 subscriber, and I haven't received any e-mail mentioning the price cuts, but anyway makes no difference to me, I never deplete my local cap, if they drop prices on international bandwith or increase the cap to at least 3gb now that would be something to celebrate

According my calculations, if we have 4Mbps line for weekend. Two days = 48hrs, plus 6hrs from Friday. We have a 3,5Mbps line as practical maximum. We run computer for 54hrs total.

1) 3500 / 8 = 437,5KBs -> data downloaded per second
2) 3600 * 437,5 = 1'575'000KBh = 1,575GBh -> data downloaded per hour
3) 54 * 1'575'000 = 85'050'000KB = 85,050GB -> total data downloaded for 54hrs.
Oh, I didn't included various losses, except line losses.
Can you please tell how you got that?
Possible to get it before 6pm (start at 00.00 of friday, at full 500KBs) and get like 129GB.

Telkom doesn't cap you on local. They give you a certain amount for free and charge for the rest. ICASA failed to mention that local should be free.....

To be fair, I don't see any reason why it should be free. Even local bandwidth has an overhead cost to provide, albeit much lower than international bandwidth, and the provider has a right to recover that cost. While it'd be nice to have that free lunch, it's not entirely realistic...

ICASA should have mentioned that the pricing should depend on the speed of the data connectivity and not the usage of the line and no shaping for local at a fixed. Period! No free lunch, just realistic prices. What ever you do with that local is up to you as the consumer. But I'm pretty sure they allowed these loop holes so that VoIP couldn't kill the existing monolithic telecommunication monster.

Point taken. I completely agree. But with the profit they currently make on international it wouldn't affect them in too much a negative manner.
What would be nice though was if we had access to faster local resources, ie 10Mbps local and still kept our "384/512/4096 international (it is thus only our international that is limited at the moment).
