Telkom drops local ADSL pricing

Let's hope that this is the start of the inevitable snowball.

I hear ya but really what options are there? Personally I use a wireless provider but it is very expensive compared to Telkon and that does'nt suit everyone...

Same here, put it's cheaper going wireless if you dont need more than say 3gigs and dont buy extra, cause with telkom its line retal plus actual telkom line rental and so forth,

Do any wireless SP's have local browsing?????

making it cheaper than R15/GB would mean they are competing with their own resellers of their own product. ROFL

IF they lower it, the resellers complain. If they make it too high, the users complain.

Resellers must provide their own back haul, and stop reselling. Then everyone can win. I prefer win win situations.

my 2c.

What Local?

Pardon my ignorance but from TELKOM Internet tracking tool I have never seen any Local usage. So how does one know how much usuage there is and what deduction. Maybe someone can help

Friendly reminder: As you will not be capped on local bandwidth, we reserve the right to bill you for usage exceeding the allocated local bandwidth on promotion. The charge for local bandwidth is R25.55 per gig. This is with effect from 1 February 2008. To read more please visit our website www.telkomsa.net

I also seem to be getting more then 3GB a month without being capped

uhm webafrica is still 130R for 30 GB's! or R4 per GB

Telkom what a joke LOL

PS the first 3 GB is international Bandwidth :)

they can shove it, drop the price on something to a point where it's still more expensive than it already is somewhere else.

up yours telkom

That's right, TI allows you to go to around 4 or 5GB (depending on when in the month) before they cap international, only then does your local start.

I've got two accounts, and I downloaded the IS BGP routes so that I can force local traffic over one of the ADSL's, all international goes over the other...

Webafrica is R220 for 3GB international and 27GB local. on IS, so where does the R130 come from .

At R239, Telkom is more expensive, but I'm getting around 35GB a month in local traffic (The first 4 to 5 is blended international)...

I don't see how Telkom is a joke?

If you get the Local 30 GB account for R130 you get 3 GB international with it...they have a glitch in the system...try it if it doesn't work I'll give you your money back...

i hope no one from IS is reading this :)

They are currently capping blended use at +-4.5 Gigs. As for local, you just need to know how to use it:

Been like that for a long time. There is a pool of international data available to those accounts on a first come, first serve basis. So if you are greedy, and quick off the mark, you could probably get more than that on the 1st of a month. But the pool gets depleted very fast.

Being able to switch between local and international (without the international having to be depleted first) would be awesome (since I work from home a lot of the time...pretty much the only use I have for local).

I'd like to see the ADSL subs stay the same but with the following changes:
- Eliminate the 384kbps connection (upgrade all 384 users to the 512)
- Increase all 1GB caps to 5GB
- Increase all 2GB caps to 7GB
- Increase all 3GB caps to 10GB

Ok - with that though they would have to also introduce a drop in bandwidth cost...dropping from the +/-R70 per gig down to at least half would be nice...but I'd acept R40 per gig for internantional bandwidth.

Webafrica currently sell 10 gigs for R490 so I would hope to see a better reduction than R40 per gig personally.

This is silly.
If you have a Telkom accound + ISP, you get 2gig blended and 20gig local or 3 Gig blended + 30gig local, depending on what you pay.

I certainly NEVER need to buy more local, because I cannot use that much as it is. So in effect they are giving me nothing in this reduction.

Agreed..

Yep, I agree - this article should not even invoke this level of discussion, as the whole thing is a fat w@nk.

There is a marked difference between my understanding of UNCAPPED and that of Telkom. UNCAPPED in my view means simply one price and unlimited usage. It does NOT mean buy once and again as many times as you like every time it runs out? Which ****NUT thought that up?

But taking into account the criminal intent and the fact that we've gotten used to being ****ed over, this reduction is welcome. It is like being ****ed by a smaller guy in prison rather than his body building 7 foot brother...

NOTE: CHANGE THE SWEAR WORDS INTO WHATEVER IS SUITABLE TO YOUR TASTE. :D
