Please clarify this for us, are you saying Telkom will not provide 1Mb uncapped on a >=4Mb line?

Correct i phoned in and spoke to this woman who said they could not offer it, i thought bull**** so i phoned again got through to some guy who said no of course you can. So i applied something felt odd like getting full line speed on my line so i called in and asked them to check they had in fact signed me up for the 4mb account.

As for the rage thing i think they got it confused a friend of mine signed up there and he is still waiting so they most likely realize they screwed up.

Wow amazing, signing up tomorrow! >.<
Daytime restriction
Internet Speed --Up to 384kbps --Up to 1024kbps --Up to 4Mbps
6 am to 6 pm --Up to 295kbps --Up to 472kbps --No restrictions apply
6 pm to 10 pm --Up to 354kbps --Up to 767kbps
10 pm to 6 am --No restrictions apply

No idea if you're being sarcastic but this account performs better than any of the other uncapped products i have tried, and i have pretty much tried them all.

Well that is good to know, I think that I will be moving over to Telkom, I also want better line speeds and faster downloads

I spent a half hour at my local Telkom Direct shop this morning trying to ascertain if it was feasible to add a 1Mb uncapped account to my existing Telkom services (6Mb line, 16GB capped) at the end of this month and came away no wiser. The concept (and benefits in my case) of having a uncapped account in addition to a capped account on one ADSL line seemed to be beyond them plus they were upset that they hadn't been informed about the new accounts in advance thus their knowledge was limited solely to the pricing.

Tomorrow I'll try 10215 and see if they can clarify the issue.

I too had an argument with them, but according to them its linked to your sync rate and cannot be changed her words exactly were "These are our packages, this is what we offer"

No ways dude, those stats on the Telkom web page beat any offering Ive used thus far, normally daytime is 192K and then only full speed after 11pm (full speed for me is 400K) so from those stats I get full speed all day, fantastic! lol! ^.^

I've been using the 10mb uncapped telkom account and if they are shaping it, I sure cant tell...

Well if telkom carry's on not shaping there uncapped accounts, I can see a lot of people jumping from the other ISP's to telkom. At the moment the other ISP's are shaping downloads to death!

Wait till about 3 months have passed. There aren't really enough people using it now to put strain on the network. Once the heavy downloaders start coming to Telkom, it's over.

That would be true if their network was as small as the others. It will take a while before the mweb fan boys bite the bullet and begin moving over.

Uhmm, the 4MB/10MB uncapped account is a business account and has no restrictions :p that's why you can't tell :D.

The restriction speeds are advertised in kilobits not kilobytes. I think you got the two confused.

At the moment Telkom has a lot of small to medium business with them. They also have a lot of people that just have accounts with them for emails and browsing. So Telkom would have a good balance of heavy downloader's and light users. But like with all things in South Africa we will only know for sure after there uncapped adsl from Telkom has been tested over a period of time. Here is hoping that Telkom has turned over a new leaf and all goes well, because then all the other ISP's will have to stop shaping there customers to death, or lose all of there customers over time.

Hey guys, I just signed up with Telkom today and I can only seem to get 40KB on YouTube and the like (4MB line) is this normal? The lady was very confused and signed me up for the basic package for R369pm... thought the basic was 384 at R219? Just wondering if this is it or if there was a booboo? ^.^

Edit: Also is there some way I can check which service I am signed up for?

Aaah I see now, but 472kbps is still > 192kbps... Only problem is on other uncapped products YouTube is on a cached server so you get full speed there at least... Any chance of this happening here or some way I can force it to use local?

You won't get your true 4MB speed as the account limits that. To get full speed, you either upgrade or use another ISP account, this is from my understanding. Some users have indicated full speed so do test for us :).

40KB/s is pretty good.

If you paying R369.00, you are using the 1MB uncapped package (i initially thought it was the slower one :p). You should see speeds increasing in the evening but local full speed. I think if you signup for online billing, you can check your statement as to which service, not sure sorry.

You can contact or read Pada's guide to routing Youtube over here

I must warn, it gets technical however Pada is friendly so just shout if you need help :).

Edit: if you using Firefox, FlagFox shows where the server is located and helps to tell if you using the cached server. Accounts make no difference on whether you using the cached server or not. Its more to do with the IPs i think.

Thanks so much for the informative post, I will most certainly check it out and let you guys know if I get it working! Well it most certainly beats the IS offerings atm! ^.^ I only signed up today so I dont have this months account yet, I should know tonight if Im getting 354kbps or 767kbps ^.^

Well it certainly is the cheapest offering around so even if I get another daytime account I doubt Ill ever hit Mwebs R539! ^.^

Edit: yeah just tried to download from dogaming.co.za and can only get 40K there too so I dont think local will be full speed
