Telkom Mobile LTE Uncapped Feedback Thread (June 2015)

I wonder when Cape Town is going to get this...

and what are the pings like to EU? and US? If someone could post a ping to www.bbc.co.uk that would be useful :)

Sorry no picture did one to Vodacom London, this is what I got using Speed Net.
Ping: 219ms
Download speed: 20.60Mbps
Upload speed: 4.13Mbps

Hope this helps.

So what sort of throttling are users seeing post 50gb?

Absolutely no throttling to date on streaming (Netflix, Kodi, Youtube), gaming or http downloads. There may be throttling happening on P2P services but I never make use of those so I can't confirm unfortunately.

Good to hear. You have any idea what your current usage rates are?

And what sort of speeds are you achieving?

Usage totals aren't displayed on the Telkom website for LTE Uncapped but I tracked it personally just to get an idea of how much bandwidth I'd end up using. I'm sitting at close to 60GB right now (I streamed a lot of sport in full HD which quickly adds up). Our usage tends to spike over weekends at the moment due to the rugby world cup, my wife and I streaming movies and it also happens to be when our daughter's allowed some screen time on Youtube on our iPad.

Speeds vary according to time of day but I've never seen it dropping to below 20Mbps on speed tests and the maximum I've seen was somewhere around 55Mbps. 20Mbps is more than enough for our needs so I'm not complaining. Uploads are more consistent at 5 - 8Mbps. Uncapped LTE accounts also come with an antennae and free installation. The antennae boosted my signal from 3 bars to 5 bars but 3 bars was still completely usable (my max speed never went higher than 30Mbps on 3 bars).

What I enjoy most about LTE is how it allows more than one activity on the internet at once. I streamed rugby on a number of occasions while my daughter watches Youtube next to me with no perceivable drop in quality. I've also played a few rounds of Heroes of the Storm while my wife streams and latency seemed fine. I was on a 2Mbps ADSL connection before LTE and one would literally have to kick every family member off the router before trying to stream or game.

Have the service for almost a month now and I am super happy with it! Get a consistent 15Mbps on 3 bars (lost of trees in my line of site to the BTS which is about 600m away from me). At R599 (even at R799) no one can beat the value for money this product offers. I use Netflix, Hulu, Youtube etc extensively on 4 screens in my house. No issues at all. Keep my "other" downloads to between 12am and 6am and no hassles yet. I have used 94GB since Oct 1 when I reset the counter.

Keep up the good work Telkom!

Great to hear I'm not alone. My SIM for the product died (for a lack of a better term) the other day. Went to a Telkom store and got a sim swap. The new sim was tested in store and I was on my way within 20 odd minutes. I know Telkom still faces major service-related challenges but they're certainly taking some step in the right direction.

As an aside, my wife and I also switched to Telkom prepaid two months ago and there coverage and call quality has been really impressive in Gauteng so far.

has anyone tested any online gaming platforms? particularly PS4?
how has the latency been?

I've played some Heroes of the Storm on Blizzard's European servers. Ping was 200 - 300ms. Local pings have been in the 20 - 30ms ranges. It's comparable to my latencies on ADSL but being wireless I'd suspect it's a little more inconsistent than fixed line broadband. It's fine for MOBA's but I've no idea how suitable it would be for FPS type games.

Thanks for the response Martin,
If anyone is looking for feedback on latency for gaming with the Uncapped LTE, see link below

works.

Wondering when Midrand will get the goods...
Midrand telkom LTE reception is not really that good in the area I am in (summerset) . I just tested Cell C's LTE in the area and it is blazingly fast. 47 Mbps ping of 25ms and upload of 18 Mbps and 4 to 5 bars signal. I had telkom come home and do a demo. Struggled for signal and speeds were only slightly more faster than the 9Mbps of my 3G. I just hope their LTE quality can be sustained.

A neighbor has a discounted package (Telkom employee) and has a B593, and each time I've been there I got in excess of 50Mbps (Noordwyk), and I have the Cell C 100GB and stuggle with 3G even at times, best I got is around 15Mbps.

I played Destiny on 3G and it was fine. Tried MGS online with LTE and it ran quite well. Many people have said it's quite close to DSL.

I actually prefer using my LTE for gaming on the PS4 and it works much better than my ADSL, FPS and all other game types. I'd say to anyone if you have the coverage go along and grab LTE with no doubt
