Telkom Speed upgrades

thankfully my 1mb was done way before the freeze. So nice to finally have a 2mb line.

So you have to phone in to get your line upgraded for real because my line is still syncing at 1MB and telkom rep does not respond to PMs

Response from TelkomZA when asking to be put on 4mb(old 2mb)

Hi, the 4meg up to 10 meg service in one price regardless of whether you can or cannot get 10 meg. At the moment the exchange you are connecting to can only go up to 4meg. There is no price difference between the 4 meg and 10 meg service. It is one service called the 4meg up to 10 meg service.

Kind Regards
^NC

Yes he is, but it just takes a bit of time. Imagine they are running around like headless chickens with all the requests :D

Fair enough. It's been almost 48 hours...

I'll call the call centre again. I'm not sure why they waste their breath arguing/denying us the upgrade if it truly is available. That take ~5min. Then I call in again for another ~5min discussion. I've tried all the angles, kept the temper down and have failed to get the line upgraded 3 times now. Waste of time!

I don't know if they've clamped down on this since Monday, but I also didn't get the upgrade the first time I called. Try a fourth time.

I was just about to when I noticed I had a PM! :)

All's sorted- I've checked back home via TeamViewer.

Keep up the good work TelkomZA- I hope you're being recognised internally for all your efforts!

It's refreshing for Telkom to have a representative here that's empowered to get things done :D

Great :) TelkomZA is a group of 3 or so reps, but yes - kudos to them. It's great having them here, which saves us from going through the call center.

A 10 minute wait on hold at the call centre, but 1 friendly and efficient rep, and I was upgraded from 1 to 2Mbps with no hassles at all :)

My line (Sunnyside, Pretoria) has been upgraded from 1 Mbps to 2 Mbps for almost a week now. During that time my speed tests fluctuate like crazy. From a high of 1.81 Mbps to a low of 0.36 Mbps. At 10210 the people has already reset my port 4 times, but I still get these terrible download fluctuations. All that I can think of is that the technicians are still busy with the upgrading progress at the Sunnyside Exchange. My quess is that the lines are not yet fine tuned, if that is the correct word to use. Any of you guys have a similar experience?

Anyone know what's happening with Mweb? Are they going to release the new pricing soon? My line was upgraded a week ago,but I assume calling telkom for a profile update won't do anything as they are not my isp.

This image is a screen capture of SpeedTest.Net results I gave done on speedtest.net, from 01 April - today, 28 November, and it includes the speedtests done since the Telkom upgrade from my previous 2Mbps to 4Mbps (the last third of the graph)

Speedtest.net by Ookla Results.jpg

I am concerned about the variance in speedtest results in since the recent upgrade of my former 2Mbps, to 4Mbps. From the graph shown in attached image, my line seems less consistent i.r.o. speeds. The graph shows download results only.

Uploads (not shown on graph here) are more stable, i.e. a graph with less 'spikes' than my download tests show.

I always test to the Telkom Cape town server (my two closest servers are CT, and George .. I live in between those two places. (Although the best DL speed result was actually to the George server, but pings were very high)

Should I expect better speed results from those shown above? Or even just less speed variances?

Or am I living in a dream world as far as data stability goes. It pees me off that my 91 year-old Dad, living in the UK (and who has just bought himself a new HP laptop, running Win 8.1) gets uncapped ADSL data, at 16mbps, for around GBP 20 per month, and that includes unlimited phone calls within the UK

So I am furious!!! Because of mweb & my own stupidity I will not be getting a free upgrade to 4MB – This is how it happened – We had a 1MB line which got a free upgrade to 2MB in 2012. I then moved my line to mweb in 2013 as a 1MB package they of course changed the line speed back to 1MB. I decided to move my line back to Telkom so I could get the free upgrade to 4MB not realizing that I only qualify for the upgrade back from 1MB to 2MB so I could kick myself!!! (and mweb!!)

You can always call Telkom to up your line to 4M at R299pm?

What??

You don't miss out on anything.
Anyone can upgrade to the 4mb.
Regardless of which package you are on, their is a minor price impact.
Either way, you will pay the price published.

Oh dear I think I misunderstood the whole thing - "runs away & hides in the corner" :o

I Apologize if the following is a repeat question.
I am trying to understand this whole "free" upgrade process. The people, who until recently, were on the "old" 2Mbps package paid a total of R616 per month, correct? After the "free" upgrade, are you now going to pay R705 (new advertised price on do Telkom) or keep paying R616 per month? i.e. the adsl line rental stays the same (with upgraded speed) and the data portion is now higher in price.
I am trying to figure out what the situation is as I am one of the unlucky ones who got upgraded to the 10Mbps package from the 4Mbps package but my exchange only supports 4Mbps. I just phoned Telkom who explained to me that I now have to downgrade to the 2Mbps package so that I can be back on my 4Mbps package (amount of R705). If I did not phone them, I would not be aware that i need to downgrade to pay the same as my neighbour. No one contacted me regarding this.
