Telkom Speed Upgrades

The big question is who is subsidising the line speed increase .Why should I pay the same price for a 4mbps as someone on the promo who is getting 8mbps. We both are customers of Telkom? Telkom need to explain and I still cannot understand why MyBroadband has not asked them to explain?

It's sort of a reward for existing customers that they get a speed upgrade. It's like what Vox has done with their promo data packages. People are paying R 164 for more than 300GB data. It's not just those on the promo deals. People who had 4Mbps do uncapped will be paying R 599 for 8 or 10Mbps as well.

An article on this would really answer some of the questions.

If we should get the upgrade, but our exchange can only do 4M, do we get automatically updated at a later stage?

If I'm not mistaken the upgrades only apply to 1mb-2mb ,2mb-4mb and 8mb-10mb lines. 4mb was never mentioned. If you run a 4mb line, ASSIA (telkoms piece of K@K line monitoring system will bump you up 5120 but with atleast 30ms added to your pre-ASSIA line speed/latancy. Got mine removed after nearly 5 months of non stop issues...Most exchanges now run on MSAN: https://ssl-1.ipact.telkom-ipnet.co.za/pubcgi/internal/NBView.pl click on DSLAM lookup and enter your number there, it will tel you what you are connected to.

"Automatic upgrades

Telkom added that from 31 August, existing uncapped customers will automatically be upgraded to the new unlimited packages.

“Customers will be upgraded from 2Mbps to 4Mbps and from 4Mbps to 8Mbps or 10Mbps respectively,” said Telkom. "

As mentioned by the article posted in the broadband section, here, at MyBroadband. :)

I received an SMS from telkom about my uncapped promo now including voice calls, etc. nothing about it being upgraded to 8 or 10Mbps. Anyone received the SMS or any SMS about being upgraded?

Yeah, I got the same thing.

Dear customer, great news! Your 4Mbps uncapped promo bundle now includes unlimited calls on the Telkom network! This means free calls to all Telkom fixed line and Telkom mobile numbers. Your bundle name will also change to UNLIMITEDhome Fibre 4Mpbs. ....

On ADSL, not sure where they get the fibre part.

Hope we get the upgrade. :(

Can anyone else confirm that this means that it is being upgraded?
My exchange is apparently being upgraded tonight.
Yes, you're getting a MSAN.

Maybe log into your modem and take a screenshot if your stats now and one tomorrow night and compare.

Just to verify will a 4mb go to 10mb?and a 10mb go to 20mb etc.....? It carries on like that ?

I foresee a lot of complain about people who want 10mbps even though they are 100km from the closest exchange.

No real change in my stats to be honest. Am I supposed to see an immediate change after the migration or will that only happen after the cutover?

When I was upgraded to an MSAN the internet was off for a couple of hours and when it came back my stats were amazing.

I always synced at around 7Mbps on a 10Mbps line, I now have 40Mbps.

As of this morning, my line is syncing at 5117kbps from 4096kbps. I have attached my stats.

I feel like it should be syncing at 8Mbps but Telkom is being dumb again.
