Telkom users hit by throttling issues

Telkom Internet uncapped customers have complained about being throttled unfairly due to incorrect Fair Usage Policy (FUP) implementation.

A number of customers reached out to MyBroadband and voiced their frustration as they claimed their real usage did not align with what Telkom shows on its online customer portal.
Sorry, come again..... "uncapped" and throttled because of usage ?

Never understood why anyone would use Telkom as their ADSL/Fibre ISP when there are so many other options.
I live in Jhb and my choice is basically Telkom fixed LTE or MTN fixed LTE. And Telkom is the fastest of the two. Both month by month.
P.S. Vumatel is too useless to extend to my street in spite of several signed expressions from the street.

Is it just Telkom? I have an ADSL Telkom line (4Mbps; supposedly) with MWeb as the service provider, uncapped. After about a month of Netflix (really the only change) an email titled Acceptable Usage Policy pops in. It warbles on, threatening to slow my connection unless I upgrade.to a Premium product. The main grumble appears to be downloads. I do not download anything except work stuff, ok, there have been some big files downloaded from Dropbox etc recently but no movies and not much has changed. I have not analysed my usage though.

So wot is going on? Genuine "fair usage policy", limitations due to faulty cables or just good old fashioned SA greed?

there's your problem. better to go with an isp that doesn't do that, there are plenty, for example vox etc.
maybe other users can post which isp's don't do this?

I wonder, if they are not using the FUP, as a means of getting folks to use less bandwidth, ( scare ) due to the heavy knock, Telkom is taking due to the cable break issues. Seems they do not have sufficient other routes on other cable systems to cover their rear ends.

I have had a Telkom account for years now and my problems started long time ago when I had an ADSL line. When LTE became available I moved over hoping to resolve my downtime problem. I even upgraded from capped to uncapped at huge monthly cost. Alas, the throttling problems mounted to an alarming level well before I reached the throttling threshold. My frustration has reached a critical level to the extent that, on my cell phone, at times I switch off Wifi to be able to connect to the internet. Telkom LTE is utter useless. I am now seriously looking for the alternative service provider but being in East London, we have limited choice here!!

Afrihost Pure LTE on MTN?

Might be an option.

Cell-C might also be an option, but is likely somewhat more expensive. Pity they don't re-sell via Afrihost anymore - was getting 70mbps on them.

Cool Ideas & Axxess on Vumatel have ZERO throttling or FUP on their Uncapped Services.
Openserve is a bit cheaper than Vumatel, but they implement a FUP & throttling.

Uncapped means just that, Uncapped(no limitations).
Only Telkom changes the English language to suit their greed.
Also, beware of their "Big Deal" promotions.
(Read the fine print carefully....)
It certainly isn't a Big Deal when you sign up, but becomes a Big(headache)Deal once you have it. And then try complaining or trying to get out of it. Good luck with that too!
Just another unethical business tactic to make money & keep the pockets of their executives bursting at the seams.

Axxess throttle on adsl by the way.

What to do with a 20/4 Telkom fibre deal when Fast.Com shows speeds of 1mb. Am I being throttled for only streaming? Calling to find out left me more puzzled and frustrated. After an hour of no joy I dropped off the call. I can't wait for Telkom to develop ethics so I decided to stream using my cell as wifi Hotspot - WOW! AMAZING how the cell streamed without interruption. On Telkom fibre it buffers heavy sometimes up to 3-4min. Is someone or some entity going to take them to task?

Telkom is suffering due to the double cable break, but yeah, seems they do not have enough capacity on their other routes ... :((
