I am seriously considering changing my ISP from Telkom to Afrihost. As a matter of fact, I have subscribed to their 1G free account to see how it goes.

At the moment, I am paying as follows, excluding VAT, me being a pensioner and all!

Your Telephone Line 24 May 14 - 23 Jun 14 R92.27
DSL Fast Bundle 24 May 14 - 23 Jun 14 R144.74
Closer CallCatcher 24 May 14 - 23 Jun 14 R8.64
Telkom Evening W/Ender Plan 24 May 14 - 23 Jun 14 R23.82
TI-MailBox Jun 14 R13.76 (This is an extra mail box which will fall away)
TI-AllAccess 10GB 24 May 14 - 23 Jun 14 R130.70
Then there is a discount, Do Broadband 2 -R49.12

Am I correct therefore that I am paying R289.20 less R49.12 = R240.08 per month excl VAT for internet excluding line rental and telephone service?

Now. If I change over to Afrihost, their 30+30 GB capped package will only cost me R129 incl VAT. Is this possible, or is it the biggest bargain you can get?

You are semi correct. The R129 from Afrihost does not include the Telkom line rental(the actual copper) and the DSL service payment. You will have to keep paying that to telkom or get a dsl plus data bundle from Afrihost but even then you WILL still pay telkom the line rental. Note that the bundle does not include 30 + 30 data and is only for the amount you buy.

The bottom line is that if you want to use ADSL you will never be able to get away from Telkom completely as they are the only company in South Africa that provides the physical infrastructure necessary for ADSL.

I understand the line rental part but I did not know that the DSL service payment, R144.47, was a fixed charge, so to speak. That means that I am paying R130.70 excl VAT for 10 GB data. That is 13.07 per GB if my reckoning is correct.

What is the meaning of the "R129....bundle does not include 30 + 30 data and is only for the amount you buy" ?
Are you saying that I will have to pay Afrihost R129 (what is this for?) plus let's say 10 GB data, which equals R40 as per their site, totaling R169 where my data at Telkom presently, 10 GB, works out to R130.70.

Your account will consist of 3 items:
1. POTS line rental (plain old telephone system)
2. ADSL line rental
3. ISP cost

Here's your options:
1. Leave everything at Telkom
2. POTS and ADSL line rental from Telkom , ISP from Afrihost
3. POTS rental from Telkom with a ADSL line rental + ISP bundle from Afrihost.

In terms of cost, option 3 is the cheapest.

Do you use your telephone to make many calls?

Hiya... unless you are a serious "techie" or gamer... stay with Telkom... I have switched back after 9 months of throttled frustration with Afrihost. Very pleasant people, but not a great service :-)
