TelkomInternet - Capped Users for May 2007

I am in no way agreeing with how Telkom operates, and I too am paying out of my ass for a simple broadband package. You ridicule me just because I have an opposing view on the "get what you pay for" concept, and based on that you generalise and tell me "bend over and take it". You clearly have a great immature insight in how the world operates, fool.

The forum is about people, both pro and against the local broadband situation who are here to express their views. I too am against this monopolistic situation, however just because I oppose one of your mindless views, you bring me down to a Telkom lover?

How is your comment brilliantly put? You seem to be so hooked in to the Telkom bashing that you can't separate an legitimate operation from an illegitimate one. Do you not see this by now, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR, regardless of how much we actually pay for broadband here, you're paying for 3gb, so stop bitching because you can't leech 30gb anymore.

Hehe, you need to chill out my man. It's nearly weekend.

But let me take the time to answer your post.

For starters, you attacked me and others in this thread first. Now it is fine to have a view contrary to that of many people here. When you support such a stance, however, you have to be prepared for many people to disagree with you.

To correct some of the many faults in your argument/statement.

If you read my few posts you will see that I am not with TelkomISP and never was with them.

I am not one of the people moaning about the fact that they are now hard-capping. I am all for it! It finally seems to level the playing field in respect of other local ISP's.

If you can buy 3GB bandwidth from anyone other than Telkom, why wouldn't you?

Many smaller ISP's have been superior to TelkomISP for years. All that was preventing people from switching to them was either the fact that they were tied into their email address for work purposes or, that hey were able to 'rape' TelkomISP accounts and get more than they paid for, sometimes getting as much as 20GB off a 3GB account.

I am glad that this is no longer the case, glad that people will now see Telkom for what they are and glad for every person that leaves TelkomISP in the wake of this.

I imagine you will not be one of the people leaving TelkomISP, but so be it. You cannot convince everyone of the right thing to do. Either way, your rant/attack will not dissuade me of my opinion, which I am just as entitled to as you are to yours.

Capped on 3GB account

I have TelkomInternet 3GB account.
My last usage e-mail said I was on 3.5GB or so,and I am now capped.
I signed up for TelkomInternet because I figure that paying R250 a month, and getting a bit more than 3GB was okay by me, because although other ISP's would charge less than R250 a month, you would be capped at the 3GB threshhold. This is unfair play by telkom, because they have that edge over other ISP's, but even though I know telkom is playing unfair, I will still use their service, because in the end, I am trying to get my money's worth. But now that I have been capped at 3.5GB (what happened to that 6GB that was mentioned?), I am thinking of jumping ship and PAYING LESS at another ISP. I will wait till next month, if I am capped again around 3GB, I will cancell my telkom ISP account and move to another where I will PAY LESS!!! What's the point in staying with telkom if you are paying more for the same cap as another ISP, who has much better service anyway.

Telkom Reps, please could you run this by the big guns...they are going to lose so many customers...or could you clarify why we are being capped around 3GB, but paying more than other ISP's...

At R250, having a 3GB TelkomInternet account that hardcaps makes little sense I would agree. But incorporating it into a doBroadband account (as I posted on the previous page) makes it very worthwhile. I think the 3GB comes in at about R160.

EDIT: bonobo informs me I was incorrectly capped and the situation has been rectified. I haven't checked if I am back online with that account but thanks again to him.

RPM,

couldn't you perhaps rally an official answer from Telkom on this one? It seems that deciding to effectively kill all soft caps leads to a number of issues, false advertising being one of them.

Please retry Noobzy. If you have a 3Gb account you should not have been capped at 3Gb. There may have been a bit of glitch.

Capped

In an earleir post I stated I was capped at around 3.5GB, I was mistaken, it was slightly more, an e-mail I got today was as follows:

According to our records your total online usage as at [2007-5-9 00:00:01] has reached and exceeded both your service threshold and our collective service threshold.

Username : .......................
Uploaded : 689MB or [0.67GB]
Downloaded : 3.65GB
Combined total : 4.32GB
Service threshold : 3.00GB
Percentage used : 144.33%

This action has resulted in your username being disabled until the end of the month.

Why was I not allowed 6GB?

Called telkom on 10219, they told me on all accounts you ONLY get 50% more cap, so basically on a 3gb cap you MIGHT get UP to 4.5gb. no more. davidr, thats about as high as they will let you go it seems.

Thanks for the reply crysis.

You know...most months, I dont even reach my allocated 3GB cap. Then the one month I decide...ok...im going to go a little over this month as I really want this download, Telkom decides to change policy, and I get capped not even a 3rd of the way into the month. So much for "making it fair for those users who don't abuse the system"...lol....murphy's law eh...
Lucky I have a Web Africa prepaid account from when I first got ADSL, and telkom claimed "you cant do a self install, we have to install it for you and charge you over R400 for it". And the second time I phoned they said "Self install is only available in one place in Cape Town", and the third time I phoned they said "There's no such thing as a self install". But imagine how not so surprised I was when I setup a Web Africa account and installed my modem and it all worked perfectly...and a week later a telkom techie rocked up at my place, said hey looks its working, and promptly charged me the R430 installation fee. Okay enough of my ranting about useless telkom service...I think im going to top up with Web Africa, and perhaps keep topping up each month from now on...

LoL.. Okay well i did not get a reply from you.. :) Must have gone missing along the line.. But you have a new pm. :)

Well, all I can say is...sad, very sad indeed. Not only must we be satisfied with a 2/3 gig cap but we have to be satisfied with a "best effort" service from them as well. Let's face it...all of us had problems with International latency lately and how would Telkom feel if we only pay them say...half of what we're suppose to cause their bladdy DSL is offline more than on? This sucks - I have decided to take out a private ad in a CT news paper to voice my dissatisfaction.

Hell, come to think of it...I'm cancelling as well and NO, not because I am a high bandwidth user but because I refuse to support a company that rips people off. Mmmm, that R1000.00 can pay for the box ad

Me off to cancel my TelkomInternet ;)
