TelkomInternet - Capped Users for May 2007

If you plan on exceeding 6GB in the next couple of hours.. yes :)

What I have decided to do is cancel both TI 3GBs but get one 2GB TI account.. effective 4GB for R149 for me is still acceptable.. I can do everything else I want over IS

Been on OpenWeb MyADSL special since January (R1 199pm) but sadly this is coming to an end this month. I also have Telkom CLoser 5 (R699pm). So my total outlay is R1 898pm, R1 598pm if you strip out Closer.

I don't want to pay more for a service that is half (maybe even less) the speed. And it also seems that IS are crippling their service with thresholds, even on the 1024k service. R2500pm and you still get nobbled! Not acceptable.

So I reckon I will convert my Closer 5 to DoCloser 3 (R888pm), which effectively gives me 6Gb for R189pm. I'll continue using WebAfrica prepaid as backup. And I'll get a 30Gb (R130pm) Local IS account for the balance of my needs. So my total outlay will drop to a minumum of R1 018pm (R718pm if you strip out closer) depending on how much I dip into prepaid.

I just hope I haven't been too spoiled on uncapped... :o

Agreed with GateGrasher. For those of you wanting to jump to IS purely because Telkom are now more leniant, have you every had an IS account? It ranges from infuriating to ok at the best of times ( I have 1024 uncapped).

With my SAIX account I get my full 4Mbps all day and all night*, 95% of the time regardless of site I am downloading from.

* for a total of 2 hours a whole month, that's how long it takes to get to the 3Gb limit....

I am talking bout a Local Only account.

Setup will be as follows:

1) TelkomInternet 2GB (4GB) - International
2) WebAfrica 30GB Local Only - Local
3) WebAfrica Prepaid Unshaped - WoW

I used the IS uncapped service from OpenWeb in January and I must say the service was fantastic, I am not sure which account I had again, but it was full 4MBit speed :)
80% of my traffic can actually be routed through local sources so that saves me a lot of cash

How do I determine wether I'm capped or not?

My modem doesn't want to connect with my Telkom Internet accounts, IS works fine.

Telkom's usage tracker reports: 4.25GB
SAIX's usage tracker reports that my account doesn't exist???

I didn't get any mails from Telkom stating that my account has been disabled etc? How do I know if this is due to capping or something else/worse?

I had a similair problem the other day, but later that day it worked fine again. How long has telkom ISP been down for you? If only a few hours, just try again later incase its something on their side they are busy sorting out. If you have a 3GB account, you should apparently reach 6GB. I got capped at 3.4GB, then the next day I was uncapped, then I couldnt connect on day, but in the evening I could. Im currently still going strong at just over 5GB on my 3GB account.

I never have problems connecting to my Web Africa or openweb accounts and I always know how much I have used and how much I have left.

I really can't see the attraction of TelkomISP now that they do not allow you to go way over your 'cap'.

I just spoke to a telkom rep at Futurex today and his argument about the capping went like this 'We pay x amount for let's say 2TB of bandwidth so we cannot have the entire pool of users have unlimited bandwidth as we will far exceed our costs' - so I asked him 'I understand that argument about international but what about local?' - so he was stumped and gave me some BS answer. They own the freakin local bandwidth so why must they cap us locally?? Then I asked him 'how can the rest of africa give their users uncapped accounts' and he answered the same as ICASA 'show me those reports where morocco etc. give international uncapped' - lol I just laffed at him and moved on. They are trained well to talk BS. I wonder what the telkoms reps on this channel have to say.

3Gb telkom account got capped at 4.9Gb according to Saix userstats.

Telkomsa user stats says 6.5Gb but it is showing a extra 1.5Gb rollover from the previous month session which finished on the 1st.

Can i complain and to who as there is nothing official about the 3Gb will get you 6Gb ??

Yeah, I know what you mean. I said somewhere before that what I don't understand, is if Telkom spends R10 000 000 a month to pay for international usage, and assuming that there are at least 200 000 ADSL subscribers, that works off to around R500 per person. And if there are at least 500 000 ADSL subscribers, it works off to R20 per person. (Assuming that it's uncapped access).

Since I got the new tariffs this month, I pay R1000 a month for my 4mbps line with a 3GB and a 2GB account. What I don't understand, is if they just pay for the access to international bandwidth (which I thought is all they paid for) and that the access costs R10 000 000 (which seems like a safe amount, because I doubt it could be more, or even close to R10 000 000 a month) then shirking those costs to the subscribers and giving us all uncapped access, would be logical, affordable and damn well better.

And since I'm already handing out R1000 for my ADSL, I have no problem paying R500 on top of the R452 for the 4mbps line (until they finally come up with something faster) and getting uncapped access.

I'm sorry, but I just don't understand how this whole capping mentality works.

R10 000 000 divided by 200 000 users is R50/user.

**slaps head** Sorry, when punching in 10000000 on the funny little calculator thingie I put in one too many zeros :P

R50 huh? Even better XD

And thanks for correcting me :P

**skulks away feeling stupid**
