I have some very bad news for you, I also have a bad line and you won't like this. I went through hell with Telkom, had many technicians here etc. Chances are your line is old and not in great shape anymore. All that they told me is that they're not concentrating on copper anymore, they're busy with fiber. And if they upgrade the copper in my area, it'll be months. Oh and guess what, no planned fiber upgrades here. And worst of all, I live in a mid to high class area, but they just don't give a damn. So no, "ASAP" won't happen my friend.

Sad truth is, Telkom doesn't care about losing customers.

It's sad but true. That's the unfortunate bit. I'll just keep nagging, and banging down doors though.

Well that sucks. I live in an area that is practically in the middle of nowhere, (and also pretty run-down to be honest). So there is no chance that upgrading the lines in my area is anywhere on Telkom's to-do list.

I've been thinking, what if I just go with Wireless Internet? I know it's not ideal, but surely it's better than sitting with a wired connection that disconnects every 5 minutes, isn't it? What are my options for wireless Internet?

That's exactly what I wanted to do, was willing to pay more than R3000 p/m for Wireless, but there is absolutely no line of sight here (I live on the side of a mountain, many large trees in the way). This includes NeoBroadband (cheapest of the bunch) and various other WISPs in the area. Was considering LTE, but bad reception, and also the FUPs aren't acceptable for me, I use at least 200GB per month, mostly cloud storage related for work...

EDIT: But in your case, consider it! Do some research on WISPs and maybe LTE or 3G, depending if that will satisfy your needs.

If anyone else in the Pretoria North area is having extreme problems with speeds and ping, please share here.

I can't even do speedstests anymore, speedtest is literally timing out...

Unfortunately I'm not exactly well off when it comes to money. Anything more than R500 per month is definitely out of my price range. I don't need anything fancy. I'm happy with 4mbps, but would be willing to settle for 2mbps if needbe. I don't use a lot of bandwidth. It is extremely rare for me to use more than 50GB per month, and I almost never reach the 100GB mark. So around 50GB to 80GB per month should be fine for me.

There are Vodashops as well as MTN stores and Cell C stores in my area, and there are actually a whole bunch of private companies in my area that offer wireless Internet. Is it a good idea to use a private company? Because I've heard there are a lot of complaints about Vodacom's, MTN's and Cell C's wireless Internet services. And I sure as hell am not going to use Telkom for obvious reasons.

I understand, until recently my financial situation was also not too great, and I understand what pain it can be to get proper Internet in such circumstances.

First of all, I'd recommend staying away from CellC, I've heard too many horrendous stories about their service and reception. MTN I don't have much experience with (I do use their LTE network via Axxess though, and haven't had problems). Vodacom I only use for voice, their data prices are not great.

Maybe consider doing some research on wireless Internet service providers (WISPs) in your area. I'd start with looking at Neobroadband (mixed opinions but it seems generally acceptable). Their prices also aren't bad, and there aren't equipment costs since the equipment rental is included in the monthly bill. There are many companies though, the best will be to do research. Just remember, fair usage policies are generally tighter on wireless (although your needs shouldn't be a problem).

Try out http://www.wapa.org.za - they'll find out which WISPs operate in your area, at no cost to you :)

By the way, has anyone here seen this? http://www.yahclick.co.za/
I'm checking it out now. Wonder if it's an option...

What are your guys thoughts on this?

I spoke to a Telkom agent, and he told me he could get my VDSL connected fast, but instructed me to select 24 month contract on the form. When I requested month-to-month, he was unable to assist or process my order and told me to walk in a Telkom store. Is this legal?

They should be able to assist no matter what, whether month to month or contract, When you say that you spoke to a telkom agent do you mean via 10210?

lol! Walk in to a Telkom store. That's funny. Considering that it's completely useless information since Telkom closes down their stores. The Telkom store in my area closed down without warning. The closest Telkom store to me now is 155 km away. Telkom really is a bunch of useless sods. The only reason I got Telkom Internet in the first place was because there was always a Telkom store close to me, so that if I had any problems I could get hold of them fast. Now since the store in my area has packed up and left there really is no reason why I shouldn't just switch to a more reliable ISP. I've also heard from an inside source that Telkom is practically bankrupt.

Telkom = epic fail.

They most certainly do! That's the only explanation I can come to. I got in touch with the rep after the technician who installed the fixed line said he knows someone who can help. I'll paste a copy of his email. However, on the phone he said, 'well, unfortunately if you're going month-to-month, I am unable to assist as I only process contracts. Your EASIEST solution would be to wait in a line at the Telkom store.' He was trying to sign me up for 20mbps VDSL with a 50GB cap.

Think there is people like him, who only handle contracts. Much the same as cellular, where you might have a prepaid and postpaid department

Hello TelkomZa,

I have PM you as well, but just going to post it here as well.

My 2mb line been "upgraded" to 2560kbps which is cool and all, but my latency increased, and I asked around and people said that it's the design, that my line been change from fast path to interleaved, and I would like to change it back, since only thing that actually matters to me is latency. ( I use my line mainly just for gaming)

And hoping you can assist me.

Thanks in Advance.

My Adsl is down. Been 3 weeks. Problem reported to call centre 3 times in that time. Each time the problem is cleared but when I get to check it in the eve, the problem returns. Ie. slow and intermittent adsl. After last technician visit my voice line also stopped working! Please advise as the call centre is unable to confirm down time / time to repair.

Hi TelkomZA

I hope you can assist me, I have contacted the call center and they have no clue what i am talking to about.

For about a month now i have been experiencing abnormal latency and i have tried different ISPs and Cap and Uncapped accounts and all have the same results, I tried calling the call center and they have been nothing but unhelpful and have no clue what i am talking about.

My normal latency/ping normally was - 39ms - 45ms / Now its never below 95ms - 120ms

Obviously with this happening it is effecting all my online based games which is very frustrating I do not know where else to turn someone suggest i send you a message so here is my attempted.

Ill give you brief run down on games its affecting.

League of Legends EU - used to be between 190ms - 216ms / Now is 295ms - 340ms average
Local servers - used to be between 40ms - 55ms / Noe is 90ms - 115ms average

I have noticed some packet loss of 5% to 15%

I have tried different routers, different ISP and capped and uncapped / Shaped and Unshaped with no better results to what i used to get latency is still high with packet loss.

I have even asked the call center to reset my exchange, and they keep asking if the internet is slow when I am talking about latency and packet loss all they care about is if i can get on "Google" which isn't my problem.

My land line number - Sent via PM

I hope you can help me resolve this or give me some suggestions, i have even gone and bought a new router and they hasn't resolved the problem.

I did PM you if my problem along with my Line Number.

Thank you
