The Bafana Bafana Thread

Damn no idea why i thought top 2 from each group go through, "we definately be ****ed!"
 
It is now clear that Bafana Bafana has to destroy S. Leone to be safe.
 
Unfortunately not.

The top team in each group qualifies, as does the runner-up of Group K (which contains 5 teams) and the two best runners-up from the other groups

2 hosts, 11 group winners + runner up group K and 2 best runners up = 16 teams

Doesn't look likely we will make 1 of the top 2 runners up. So niger have to lose to egypt and we must draw or beat leone to go top.

Lol yea this whole time i thought we were cruising for at least a 2nd place and qualifying.
 
Yea Egypt better do us some favours. They are playing at home so should be able to if they up their game.

But Egypt are playing their under 23 team in that qualifying match, we can't hope for much from them.

There is some good news though, our All Africa games team (a weak U23 squad) beat Mozambique yesterday. Their other 2 group games are against Madagascar on Wednesday and Libya on Saturday.

I am not perturbed by this at all. We will still qualify at the top of our group. Egypt might be playing their under 23 but they are playing at home. The same under 23 narrowly lost to S.L away, so I don't see them losing to Niger at home. We could have beaten Niger at home with our under 23. The worst that can happen is a draw which will still suit us. I know that we will beat S.L. for sure. Checking the overall results over this campaign there is very little evidence to even suggest that NIGER are capable of winning away? In fact that is the norm in AFRICA, only the likes of Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria can go away and come back with wins. It is such a vast continent this and it's very difficult to get out of the group due to the disparate conditions that one has to travel to.

Do you think that the qualifying format is to blame? I agree that it leaves very little room for slip ups, but that has been how the qualifiers for AFCONs and WCs have worked for a long time.

The format is **** to begin with. What makes it even more **** is that one team left a random group and another random group got an extra team, like the idiots in charge couldn't reschedule **** before a match was even played. That ****ed up the entire qualifications campaign.

Going back to why it's **** to begin with, is because most of the 2nd placed teams don't stand a chance. It's time that CAF and FIFA at large learn that a system where the draw plays paramount to actual ability is ****. If Brazil was stuck in Africa they'd also fail to qualify for cups at times, luckily they have the most reasonable qualifying structure.

The five team group was set up and had played matches before Marutania withdraw. The format is harsh, but SA's results have not been amazing, 2 wins, 2 draws and a loss are not outstanding. Africa is too big (55 teams) to do the South American style qualifiers.

I know that in general playing more matches tends to get the best teams qualified, but their is a limit on match days. I suppose we could have had 7 groups of 6, for 42 teams in the main draw, and the top 2 from each group go through. However, that would require 10 matches in only 6 match days. Thus teams would need to play 2 qualifiers in a row on some matchdays, as in Europe. However, distances are far greater in Africa, and logistics are more difficult.

I think the size of the continent is a big problem. Also, the infrastructure in most African countries is sh#t. That makes it very hard to train and prepare in carpet like pitches only to have to play your most crucial matches on bumpy pitches in searing heat of 35 degrees or more. This system already favours teams that are used the harsh conditions as there is little time for the visitors to acclimatise.

CAF should rather have qualifications done at regional level i.e. COSAFA (South), CECAFA (East), WAFU (West), UNAF (North), UNIFFAC (Central). The best three teams in each region should qualify plus the host country to make 16 teams for the finals. This would eliminate the need to criss-cross the continent ending up with nothing to show for it. The current format makes it much harder to qualify than to win the actual tournament.
