While regional qualifiers would reduce travel, I can't see CAF argeeing to that for the AFCON. They do it for smaller tournements though. Plus the 5 regions are nowhere near the smae strength.
 
Some more good news from Mozambique, the U23 team is through to the semifinals of the All Africa Games. They will play Cameroon or Senegal on Tuesday.

It's a nice venue, and tends to draw a good crowd, yes I'm looking at you Joburg and Rustenburg! I can only hope that Bafana get lucky and make it through to the 2012 AFCON.

Edit: Also, Bay Bafana (U23s) drew their semi 0-0 and won the shoot out 6-5. They play Ghana in the final tomorrow. Win or lose they are getting medals. Shakes need to be conmended for a great result with this rag tag team. I would hope that one of the players will give Shakes a medal, because he deserves one.

Afraid not, Bafana did not qualify. The SABC etv and a CAF official at the stadium all got it wrong! Niger are through not us. Will explain when at my pc but check wiki or bbc.

Niger, South Africa and Sierra Leone all ended with nine points, but Niger qualify thanks to their superior head-to-head record against their rivals.

"Niger have qualified," Confederation of African Football secretary-general Hicham El Amrani confirmed to BBC Sport.

South Africa joy in Nelspruit and around the country has turned to despair after the realisation that they cannot qualify as a best runner-up either.

Just as well we didn't qualify. Failing to win at home against Seara Leone means that we are not good enough to go through.

In case of equality of points between two or more teams, after all the group matches, the ranking of the teams shall be established according to the following criteria:
14.1 Greater number of points obtained in the matches between the concerned teams;
14.2. Best goal difference in the matches between the concerned teams;
14.3. Greater number of goals scored in the group matches between the concerned teams;
14.4. Greater number of away goals scored in the direct matches between the concerned teams;
14.5. Goal difference in all the group matches;
14.6. Greatest number of goals scored in all the group matches;
14.7. A drawing of lots by the Organising Committee of CAF.

I was clearly not the only one unaware of this.
 
This is not the first time our officials and SAUK get the arithmetic wrong on qualification. It happened at a world cup and Olympic qualifier.

In any other competition in the world it would be decided on goal difference first. (Otherwise there would be no point in playing eygpt).

We don't deserve to go through anyway, the "injuries" were a farce and a disgrace, and we should be winning our home games, not playing for 0-0 draws. What happened to the Bafana from a year ago? When we beat France and drew to Mexico. They played some quality football then. Now they just seem to kick it aimlessly around the field and cant keep possession for more than 5 touches.

In Spain it's head to head first for la liga. I'm sure there's something else in south American decided the same.

Nope, UEFA uses the same system for the Euro qualifiers.

1.Higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question
2.Superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question
3.Higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the teams in question
4.Higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question
5.If, after applying criteria 1) to 4) to several teams, two or more teams still have an equal ranking, the criteria 1) to 4) will be reapplied to determine the ranking of these teams. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria 6) and 7) will apply
6.Results of all group matches:
1.Superior goal difference
2.Higher number of goals scored
3.Higher number of goals scored away from home
4.Fair play conduct
7.Drawing of lots

It sucks, but SA are out. Also, a big idiot sticker to SAFA, the SABC, etv, Supersport, and anyone else who stated that SA were through. You guys suck more making me and the rest of the country think that we had made it!

Inconsistency has plagued us for years, and not qualifying for AfCON certainly doesn't help us.

But I'm stating the bleeding obvious here. :(

We suffer the England syndrome. Believing ourselves better than we are in reality. Down to earth for now. Some band aid gets applied and we forget our fundamental failures.
