Maybe this is the wrong place to ask but what's the best red wine under R100?
The closer to R50 the better and ideally something along the lines of a Ruby Cab Merlot but not too picky.
I’m looking for some daily plonk to quaff and also chuck in the stew.

This is not a bad wine for the price - R396 if you buy a case https://www.woolworths.co.za/prod/_/A-20071158

These 2 are both R100 on special at the moment and pretty decent https://www.makro.co.za/la-motte-millennium-merlot-red-wine/p/itm17e3a9b176ee4 & https://www.makro.co.za/bellevue-ma...INHFHDJEQSQGS6Y&lid=LSTWINHFHDJEQSQGS6Y2C4MRE

Van Loveren should fit right into that price bracket.

Wolftrap is a solid option, R60 at Makro

Any of you with knowledge of Portuguese wines?

I was in Rio recently and was served a dry white wine with a slight green tinge. It was THE BEST WHITE WINE I HAVE EVER HAD.

For some silly reason, I did not ask the waiter for the wine's name or to see the bottle. My assumptions lead me to believe that it is Vinho Verde. Is there any liquor store in JHB that would sell imported Portuguese wines?

PnP Online
Buy Any 6 Bottles Of Wine And Get The Cheapest Bottle Free (Smart Price)
Valid from Monday, 01 December 2025 until Saturday, 28 February 2026
Pity our PnP is so useless. At least 1/3 of the wines don’t have pricing or are mislabelled. Complained to the manager many times, improves for a short while and then back to this nonsense. I rather buy from Spar even though the eBucks are less at Spar vs PnP.

Having this tonight having inherited a few random bottles from my late father in law, who was a wine maker.

First sip was ludicrously fruity and I was not expecting to enjoy it, but it soon mellowed down.
