The Huawei B593 LTE discussion thread

Received the same router as you. I tried to google information on the router but no information available in English. They should have brought the new version that supports all mobile networks.

Doesn't exist or am I missing something?

I received my xpol-0006 LTE antenna yesterday. This was recommended by Poynting for Telkom Mobile.

Plugging it in and using it indoors just to test, performed worse than the internal antenna. Signal was between 1 bar and nothing. I had 10mins to poke at this last night so perhaps it was just not physically connected. Will mount over the weekend and post some results. Really hoping I go from 2 signal bars to a solid 4.

May I ask what the cost was for the arial? I only get 1 bar and though the download speeds vary between 10 and 33, I would not mind 4 to 5 bars. :)
 
Poynting sell the XPOL-06 to the public at just under R1,300. You may need to extend the signal cable in which case HDF195 (5m * 2) will cost you just over R400. A small tripod bracket is just over R150 and a 2m mast is just under R175. So it could cost you up to R2,000.

You would need to plan your installation according to your LOS and incoming point into your house.

Thanks for that A. I already have a mast, a left over from a failed Neotel attempt some time ago, still attached to house. Will have to replace the cable though.
 
Might be a very silly question... but my SIM card I got with the Telkom package had 5Gig's of data on it which has now run out. How do I find out what the SIM card phone number is so I can recharge?
 
Simply access http://onnet.8ta.com/ while you're on WiFi (or on your phone) with the SIM still in the device.

Note you can recharge from the website. ;) You just need to fund the account.

I was really ticked off as of lately when I discovered my threads(downloads) were being throttle at the same speed across each download at the same time was very disappointed on wireless. Decided to try another method and connect directly to the router itself the speeds increased substantially by x 4.

After doing some troubleshooting and reading forums discovered it's my on board wireless card, no updated drivers available.

I would recommend if your downloads are slow on wireless then try connecting directly to the router via LAN port if problem persist then the router possibly needs a firmware update asap..

@Azi did mention this - inconsistent..

Quick question if I may on the B593u-12. I have the Vodafone branded B2000.
Has anyone got the DDNS to work ?. The Vodafone FW version I currently have (V100R001C19SP100) has the DDNS service providers as blank, and nothing can be filled in.

At least I have the menu option of manually selecting the antenna to be either internal or external (Being an issue I have read here on this thread). Other than the DDNS, I really can't complain about this device (except for the bad support and documentation). But then, it IS Chinese, isn't it.

Another Newbie Alert.

First, thanks to all who have already contributed to this thread. I'm based in Europe so my router is the B593s-22. No antennas in the box!

The 4G signal should be pretty decent but I have to test it yet. Like others here, I'm getting ready for using LTE which is entirely new here. Location wise, my apartment is in a decent size town. There is no fiber broadband available on our road and the exceptionally poor ADSL is overloaded, especially in the evenings. Streaming for one TV via the ADSL is simply not an option, not to mention wantiong two or three TV's. If I need external antennas I hope that an omnidirectional offering like the XPOL-A0001 will suffice. I have no idea where the tower is located and am not sure if our apartment even has a window or door facing in the right direction to see the tower. Being a condo, I cannot just erect an antenna on the roof.... Any advice would be appreciated.

From the scenario you describe, the XPOL-A0001 would be a good starting point. Being a cross polarised omni antenna solution, line of sight doesn't matter.

If you really want the best possible experience though, I'd go hunting for that tower. Once you know where it is, you can assess if you can use a directional antenna instead. Unfortunately part of the assessment will include purchasing a directional antenna to determine tower direction/location. Divide the landscape around you into four quadrants and aim the antenna in each direction, allowing 30-60s between direction changes. If signal bars don't give you a clear indication, then you may have to delve into signal strength readouts within the router configuration.

Once you get the best possible measurement, you can go hunting in that direction for the tower. Obviously doing this from a high site would be much easier, as once you have an idea you can use a mobile gps to take you to that point to confirm what branding (carrier) is on the tower. So I guess the whole assessment is a 50/50 experiment. I'd certainly take that risk....

Hi!

I just wanted to find out if some one might have an answer for me, since there is very little info online about this router.

I have one and tried to hook it up to external antennas. (I have 4 different ones at home now). But I can`t get it to switch to external antenna. I have done the diagnostics -> System check as suggested in this thread, but it always says Build-in. Am I missing something? Afaik there is no way to set it to external it should pick it up automatically? I have hooked up different combinations of antennas and still nothing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, living with constantly disconnecting internet is just terrible.
 
I'm assuming none of them are Poynting? Poynting build in a DC short to shunt from external to internal. This is a key difference between Poynting and cheapies.

If you have a B593u-91 then there isn't custom firmware to unlock the antenna menu. If you have a B593u-12, there is some European firmware floating around.

Looking around this forum has raised some more questions.

This router is sometimes called referred to as a 'gateway'. That gateway bit I do not understand.

I didn't think this router/gateway would be DD-WRT compatible - but on one of the threads it is suggested that it is. I see 4 ethernet ports but not the usual connection for DSL/ADSL. I thought a DD-WRT router would need a DSL/cable connection! Any suppliers of DD-WRT routers that I have reviewed have not mentioned any form of 2/3/4G mobile data services....

To explain my interest in the DD-WRT, I was looking first to use a Smart DNS service - but better again a VPN. If the ASDL cable was good enough locally, I would have just gone with one of the better DD-WRT routers.

To keep it short, I am led to believe that such services are not compatible with 4g LTE. But I bet that there are VPN options built into this piece of hardware. Again, no user manual.....

Suddenly, yes, today, - 'Le VPN' have confirmed that their service will work over 4g LTE. I hope so.

If only there was a proper user manual for this router. The Quick Start guide is about as useful as a boiled egg on Christmas day!

BTW, I live in Dublin but my planning refers to my holiday home on the Algarve (Portugal). Local TV just isn't my cup of tea! Not by a long shot.
 
The term 'gateway' refers more to configuration inside your network. It is the internet gateway in your network and has an address of 192.168.1.1, for example. The actual hardware is called a "LTE CPE". I've only ever seen MikroTik and Ubiquiti intelligent antennas referred to as CPEs but anyway. I suppose Client Premises Equipment can be almost anything.

This router is not DD-WRT compatible. The 4 ethernet ports are 10/100 LAN ports (RJ45) The router has no support for RJ11 or ADSL. It's purely for use with a carrier.

I personally use VPN services on the device needing VPN. I don't load it on the router as such. I don't see a VPN menu on the router config page, mind you.

Note there is a 61 page online manual accessible by click on the [?] top right after logging in. ;)

Hi! Thank you for the quick response. I`m not sure which of the 2 routers I have, i`l have a look tonight when im home. Maybe I can use the firmware upgrade to get it sorted. There is a link below of the antenna I have, it`s not pointing that one, the other 2 big ones might be though, got them from a friend. Can I add a DC short manually somehow to get it to switch over?

Bud, chuck that stuff. The Chinese knockoffs are notorious for this. Poynting is quality and they talk specifically about customers with these issues.

Unfortunately you can't modify the antennas to add a DC short, at least I don't know how.
