The Huawei B593 LTE discussion thread

No internet service. I can't figure it out either totally weird.

If you've got weird DNS and no throughput, then I'd say it's a SIM or SIM provisioning problem.
To the best of my knowledge you should always get two SAIX DNS addresses from Telkom.
Perhaps time to grit your teeth and call Telkom customer support

@Dazzla:
What is SSID "R2-D2"? You can verify by MAC address (from the photo). Where it comes from? It doesn't seem to originate from Huawei. It looks like Huawei tries to attach as a client to some other access point. It could be PC or other router. In such situation it is logical that it will obtain DNS server from other router. Discovering some hidden features of B593. ;)

I suggest to temporary disable WiFi on B593, connect to PC by cable (no other device plugged-in) and see how it change things. Even if PC is wrongly configured, it will be accepting settings from router's DHCP server (you say it is set to auto configuration) and use the wired connection as a primary one.

Thanks will try it out. Its actually my friends router he has the problem. He asked me to help him out but I couldn't figure out what was causing the DNS issue so came here for help. I noticed the "R2-D2" just thought he named it that didn't check the mac address. I have the same router with telkom and mine has no problems.

The "overview" screen just confirms the name (SSID) that's been given to the primary WLAN on the (different) WLAN configuration screen (Wi-Fi / Wi-Fi Multi-SSID). The B593 normally assigns defaults of the form "HUAWEI-B593-4662-Sx", but these can be changed. The usefulness of having multiple virtual WLANs is that you can configure them differently (eg different security protocols).
"R2-D2" is just what your buddy decided to name his primary WLAN, I guess.

The problem is not the DNS address that's being assigned to the downstream PCs by the B593 DHCP server; it's the DNS that's being assigned to the B593 by Telkom (?) on the WAN side. That is unrelated to how the client PCs connect to the B593 on the LAN side.

You are right, it is regular, probably renamed "HUAWEI-B593-4662-S0" (the first SSID), so my comment was not appropriate.

If it is a new router, bring it back. Otherwise try to flash firmware (even the same version). I never seen cellular provider auto configuring Google DNS IP, so it must be a faulty router or SIM. Maybe he should try prepaid SIM first to see if it is working. Telkom new starter packs (blue SIM) come with LTE enabled. He can test connection to the telkom.co.za web site with no airtime loaded.

How can I set this modem to passthrough or bridge mode? I use unotelly for Netflix and Hulu on my Roku 3 and cannot change the dns of the router, so I want to connect it to my old Buffalo adsl router and let that manage the dns.

What is the model number of your old Adsl router? Depending on the configurable dhcp options on your old router (most importantly gateway&dns servers), you could try disbale dhcp on the B593, let your old adsl router run dhcp on the same subnet as the B593 and point your clients to use the B593 as the gateway and unotelly DNS servers. That's what i do with mine , i have a TPLink router that does my addressing with the B593 being the gateway

It's a Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH. I'm running ddwrt firmware on it.
Please can you explain how to configure it?

The B593 does not have a bridge mode. You can use the DMZ feature on the B593 set to the IP of your router. I have also disabled the DHCP and WIFI on mine. Basically using the B593 as a bridged modem to my existing Mikrotik router. Only change I had to make on the Mikrotik was to set a default route with the B593 IP address as the gateway.

With the DMZ function active on the B593 it will forward all incoming packets received on the public IP to the specified IP (your router) where it is handled according to your firewall and routing tables. You can find this option under: Security/DMZ. Enable and set the router IP.

Hope this helps.

My friend has the router B5953s-601 with telkom mobile uncapped lte. His IPv4 Dns is showing 8.8.8.8. Pdp type set to auto. Reset router to factory settings and still the same. Router connected to his PC only via wifi. PC ipv4 settings is set to obtain dns on auto. I cant figure out why any help would be appreciated.

@Dazzla: Not sure if this issue has been resolved? My B593 did the same. I received a non routable 10.150.x.x IP on the public interface with a DNS 8.8.8.8. After speaking to about 3 telkom call center staff they all wanted me to reset the router etc. The modem did actually work corectly with a SIM SONKE sim card. I gave up on the telephone support!

Long story short, I believe the SIM was in the process of being provisioned and started working a few hours after I contacted TelkomZA (Charl) and explained to him the IP that the modem was issued with. Believe it was a telkom provisioning/activation issue.

You should be getting a class B routable IP in the range 41.15x.x.x and IPv4 DNS IPs: 196.43.45.190,196.43.50.190 as indicated under the router Internet Status page.

HTH

It is exactly what I would do.
On the note: Obvious to me, but Huawei LAN port must be connected to the Buffalo WAN port using cable.

And thanks for clarifying/solving Dazzla case. I suspected SIM problem on second thought, but you are a wizard. :)

Thanks for the feedback. I'll have to try and figure this out.
Is there a limit to the length of ethernet cable between the modem and router. Unfortunately they are not in the same room. It's about 20 meters apart.

100m is a limit. :)

If you are gong this route, here is short guide for bridging Huawei "Gateway Router" (GR) and better router:

1: Disable WLAN and DHCP on the GR
2: Enable DMZ on the GR
3: Setup WAN interface IP address of the router
4: Change LAN interface IP address of the router, it must a different LAN segment than GR
5. Set default gateway on the router and point it to the GR

Example:
GR IP=192.168.1.1 [default] (connect LAN port GR to the WAN port of the router)
Router's WAN port IP=192.168.1.2
Router's LAN interface IP=192.168.2.1
Default Gateway on the router 192.168.1.1
Netmask 255.255.255.0 (everywhere)

New Huawei router model B315s-936 from Cell C support all SA LTE networks. Networks.PNG
I got it few days ago free with Giga200 SIM valid for one year for R999. The same LTE speed (CAT4), but firmware has more features comparing to B593. Important options: disable firewall and [-]manual DNS[/-]. You don't need a 'real' router anymore for home entertainment Netflix/Hulu/etc... On the hardware side - Gigabit Ethernet switch, so transfering movies to the media server will not interrupt streaming.
However for all still interested in B593 there is Telkom special @CNA R999:

EDIT: Manual DNS? NOT! So bad. :(
Sorry. Manual DNS is only possible on RJ45 WAN connection, not cellular.
