Have you guys ever tried using fring without WIFI?

What are the charges like using GSM per minute lets say?

Just gave fring a try...

GPRS is a no go.. Havent tried it using EDGE but id say it was also a no go..
I tried it with 2 iPhones connected to the same WiFi network (SAIX 4Mbps) and there was a slight delay (id say about a second or so) so i doubt GPRS/EDGE could handle it.. Just to test, i turned WiFi off and tried it with GPRS. I still logged me in, but it notified me to enable WiFi if i wanted to make Voice Calls..

Very impressed nevertheless... But i dont know about the practicality of it in South Africa

Unfortunately there arent that many WiFi zones in South Africa and where there are, they arent free... So it would probably work out to the same rates as GSM anyways not to mention the time it takes to login / pay for use of the Wifi Zone.. I mean in USA where the network providers (AT&T etc) have their own Wifi spots everywhere this would be a dream!

But besides that, for home its like a Cordless Skype Handset which i can use with SkypeOut if i wanted to (havent tried that yet thought)

Yeah I used it yesterday with WIFI (capped iBurst line) and I was quite impressed it worked well =)

That what it's basically only going to be used for, like you said: Cordless Skype Handset.

Hi all.

How about we start mentioning some interesting apps we have downloaded, as well as extra sources. Would be nice to know what's out there that we might have missed.

Thx

iBuilder - Make Your Own Custom Firmware | Windows

iBuilder, a nifty new project by rotem25, allows you to select from a large list of items for your iPhone, and create a package which can then be added to your internalPackages in iPwnage and used to create a custom firmware for your iPhone.

You can then use iTunes to simply restore your iPhone to the new firmware, with all your favorite apps, sources, or packages already in there. Not too bad...

HWPen brings handwriting recognition

Originally posted here, Hanwang.com.cn has developed a handwriting recognition app for the iPhone.

Still in beta, Latin and Chinese characters are both recognized, and the input is currently done with the finger. Of course you could also use the Pogo Stylus or TapRight as well, if you're more of a stylus folk.

ToggleBackLight 0.0.1-2

Icon debatable, but certainly a convenience to many. I am talking about togglebacklight that simply with a lower tap on the brightness of your display, and with another click, the report exactly as it was before. And ‘very comfortable at night, when you are “blinded” by too much light. We all know that you can adjust the brightness settings menu, but togglebacklight certainly shortens the time! You can download it from the category of Utilities by repoistory of ModMyiFone

Some other apps i have downloaded:

Genesis4iPhone
Zodttd, creator of snes4iPhone, gpSPhone, and psx4iPhone, now brings you Genesis4iPhone. So far it runs Sega Genesis (MegaDrive) games and Sega CD games, although the latter are still a tad on the slow side.

The app is still in beta, which is only available to donating beta members of Zodttd's site, but a 1.0 release will be on the MMi Installer and Cydia sources for free to anyone by Friday. (http://modmyifone.com/installer.xml)

Zodttd keeps bringing us some great game apps - thanks

Snapture 1.3
Snapture is probably one the top favorites among iPhone apps. So, what could possibly make it more functional? Well, how about the ability to hide the Zoom Slider…you got it! Version 1.3 adds an option to the Settings menu that allows you to turn on/off the Zoom Slider. Not only that, but Snapture is now available in four languages; English, French, German, and Italian. Pretty nice update to an app that is already pretty sweet! Snapture is available through the BigBoss source.

But i usually check out this site for the latest apps being released: http://www.appleiphoneschool.com/

Thx. Will have a look at those sites.

I am going to ask a total noob question - why would you want to create your own firmware? And what do you use pwnage for? Saw the other thread on it, but don't really get it? Is it only for Mac users.

Thx

Mostly its not about creating custom firmwares but patching it so that you can do a restore in iTunes with your patched firmware so it wont be locked again and you still end up with clean restored iPhone, to do this you need the PwnageTool.

A bonus is that you can add you favourite apps and custom boot logos if you wish but this is optional.

Carrier Bundle Generator for Pwnage

sufferwell & fxit_man - gonna need your help on this one....

I've been using iBuilder in Windows to create my own bundles and then adding them into PwnageTool1.1 as my custom packages.

My last bundle I need to create is the Vodacom one.

Please would you guys go here, fill in the details and create a Vodacom Bundle... (Don't know what to fill in 'Supported SIM') and send it to me.

TIA!

Edit: Okay if you type in *3001#12345#* and dial, Cell Info you can find it there... I think I have all the entries correct for Vodacom - will test and let you know.

MCC/MNC code is 65501 for Vodacom.

PM and i will email you the .bundle file for Vodacom as a carrier.

Very simple and easy to use. You need a Wind0zzeee machine though to use it - bummer!

I managed to add Vodacom SA to the bundle(APN,Voicemail and MCC Settings) and a bunch of other necessaties i.e: AppSupport, BSD, SSH, Fring, Installer, BossPrefs...

I don't want to install any other apps as it won't look for updates! (It is possible but i'm not sure yet on how to do this)

Another thing is, and i'm sure you guys have experienced this with Pwnage, is that after a Custom Restore your Installer.app doesn't have BSD Subsystem in it and therefore you have to download it again, even after you selected it as a Custom Package.

Apparently you need 'Fake BSD Subsystem', which for the hell of me i cannot find on the net, in order for the installer to 'see' where the actual BSD files are located.

Not that impressed with iBuilder dudes.

Half the packages that i added into Pwnage don't show up after my restore...

I must say the Vodacom bundle I made was pretty useful..

Will play around and see if there is a fix for it.

http://www.modmyifone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=136451

This is awesome! Look through that thread for more vid downloads..

Only bugs so far are:

-No listening to music in the background (only in the iPod app)
-Auto-lock is disabled

Other than that, awesome app!!

P.S. Check the Lingerie Stripper vid from that thread ;)

Very awesome app! Don't think i'll keep it thought.

There's a horrible bug that displays the vWallpaper over my Springboard, not allowing me to click on any icons.
