Nope. I spend most of my day actually talking to people "in real life" ;-P

Yeah I turned it off because most of my messages are in Afrikaans bro.

There are still some of us Affie's around in SA you know :)

So can one disable predictive text on the iPhone 3G - I hate using it.

Had a look at the iPhone 3G yesterday at the V&A iStore. I really want it but one feature that I need, GPS/Maps, doesn't work. The shop assistant actually said: "If you want mapping, get a Garmin"! And, of course already annoying is the lack of a local online support for iTunes. Are Vodacom and Core seriously committed? Or just opportunist?

The iphone 3g does have maps using gps and wps. It just has a very basic route generation and navigation system. I am sure over time google will improve that though. The data for most of SA is not up to scratch yet, but it does have some cool functions. like tel no and stuff.

As far as the gps goes, i am not that impressed with the accuracy. seems to be greater than 15 meters which is not at all good. I have a bt gps reciever thats tiny and that gets down to 2 meter accuracy. So any gps program you get at a later stage is def going to show lots of spikes!

That said its still cool to look maps up on your cell and be able to see whats happening..

Ha ha ha shame you poor man you have never heard of predictive text?!?! I bet I could type a message quicker with predictive text than you on your virtual keyboard.... and further I bet I could do it without looking at my keys.... can you?

Mate you sound like you're just jealous that you don't have one. Look each to their own, but after 3 days of using this virtual keyboard i can type fast with auto-correct disabled. Sure I agree that you can't type without looking as there is no way of knowing what you press, but quite honestly... most people who complain about this is because they use something like mxit and type while they are driving a car, which even though I've done it myself, is seriously not a good idea cause you aren't concentrating, maybe you can see what is happening in front of you while driving, but reading the replies to your messages requires looking at the screen anyway, which if driving is not a cool idea. People who text/chat while driving are worse than drunk drivers! A lot of accidents happen due to this, more than you'd think!

Rest of the message is just a general observation and not directed at LancelotSA:

On a different note. Yes the phone's specs aren't that great if you compare it to something like the Omnia. Take the camera for instance...a 5MP camera vs a 2MP camera (iphone) has and will always be a dumb argument in my eyes, for the simple reason that the lenses used in phones don't justify having these high quality sensors. If you're remotely serious about taking photos use a decent camera, with a lens that is thicker than 2mm!

Then there are other gripes that I have with the iPhone like it's inability to do bluetooth transfers, which well sucks. It's one of those things, you adapt and make other plans. Knowing how Apple operate, it's not impossible to see it sometime in the future.

Bottom line for me is... this phone's interface and the way it functions is really amazing. The iPhone was always going to get flack and was bound to be criticised in a similar way as windows vs os x and much like that argument it's down to personal taste, not one is better than the other.

All in all, if you're a high-end specs all out gadget freak... then go and get THAT phone/gadget instead and stop complaining. Most people who argue on the iphone topic is almost as bad as the traditional my d*** is bigger than yours type thing. It's boring by now, just get over it.

I don't know if I am being dense, but when I tried out a demo iPhone the other day, I went into the settings menu, couldn't return to the main menu. I couldn't find any option to return to the main menu.

Anyway, have decided on the Omnia for my upgrade! :D

Just press the "home" button to take you back to that screen, click it twice to make a call or when listening to music it brings up the desktop ipod controls.

So does it stay unlocked through firmware updates? All I think is involved is moving your serial number from AT&T to the Vodacom activation server and tadaa you can now activate it. Very curious to see what the cost will be.
