Tata set to reveal … a mid-engined sportscar?


If there’s one manufacturer we thought wouldn’t being entering the performance car game anytime soon, it would be Tata Motors. But it seems we may have underestimated the Indian manufacturer.

Yes, Tata has announced that it will be revealing a mid-engined sportscar at Geneva next month.

The new sportscar, reportedly called the Futuro, will be built under the newly announced Tamo sub-brand, which Tata says will “act as an incubating centre of innovation towards new technologies, business models and partnerships in order to define future mobility solutions”.

The Futuro teased in the image above will reportedly be the halo model for the brand and limited to just 250 units. Reports out of India suggest the Futuro will be priced at Rs 25 lakh (about R500 000) and will go on sale by mid-2018.

Autocar India says the Futuro will be powered by Tata’s turbocharged 1,2-litre Revotron engine (currently found in the Tata Bolt), boosted to develop 134 kW. Although this figure may seem relatively meagre, the Futuro will apparently be quite lightweight, with a target kerb weight of 800 kg.

The automaker will reportedly use a mix of composite plastics and aluminium to achieve this target weight, with carbon-fibre and other high-end materials having been ruled out in order to cut costs.

Interestingly, there are rumours hinting that the chassis was designed by the one and only Marcello Gandini.

I'll eat humble pie for a week if they can successfully do that.

I wonder how they will be doing this? I am assuming that the physical dimensions etc of the engine will remain as is seeing that they say it will be tha same engine as from the Bolt. So that leaves software and changing how the engine behaves and perhaps even do something with the timing of the engine to increase the compression ratio? That would turn it into a rather highly strung little engine I assume. Is that a good idea?

Biggest change is just upping the boost, most likely with a different turbo. Will be interesting to see how a high boost, yet tiny engine runs.

A small capacity engine and a high boost turbo does not bode well for reliability in my humble opinion, maybe the engineering boffins at Tata knows better, but take the masters of reliability Honda and their 1.5l turbo engine in the new Civic, it only develops 127kW from that 1.5l engine, there is a good reason why they opted to do that which Tata will quickly learn when they decide to squeeze 134kW out of that 1.2l engine.

Ford is doing wonders with their little 1.0l engine, apparently their latest Fiesta will be churning out an impressive 103kW, so anything is possible but i am not very optimistic on that 134kW Tata claim.

And Mercedes Benz, crank 280-odd kw out of a 2l, so this will have less boost than that. If you design a engine to handle high-boost it should be reliable.

Had to take my sist to the airport yesterday afternoon, and on my way home the highway was nice and quiet. Normally I just go about 100 on the highway, but decided to go for it a bit. 120 / 130 in places. Very happy. Stable like a big car, no rattles or anything bad at higher speeds. I was surprised though at the low revs at that speed? Was at 3000 rpm. In the mini it would be 4000? Any idea why? Even at the lower revs though, the car responded very quickly still to giving more gas.

Sorry for the late reply Ockie. Like the late reply that you were in the area and didn't stop for coffee?

Perhaps coz you'd learned to use the 5th gear now?
