TopTV installation, decoder, dish pricing revealed

I've managed without DSTV quite fine for all these years.
Will it be beneficial for me to spend more time in front of the tv? I dont think so.
They dont even have an updated website. The last press release is from 2007. This does not bode well for a company that plans to launch in the next month.
I'll pass - and continue going to the gym in my spare time.

Huh? I see stories from March 2010 on their website.... lay off the juice at gym man! ;)

The Premium package includes: (from http://www.techcentral.co.za/toptv-the-full-list-of-channels/13438/ )

Top Sport
Top Sport is a premium sports channel featuring sports preferred by SA audiences.
Now to just find out what they mean by sport preferred by SA audiences....

Since they already have Fox FX and Fox Retro, wonder what the chances are of them ever having Fox Sport (which I know also have the Super 14).

Wouldn't it be easier just to rather point your dish in a different direction (get the degrees somewhere) and plug it in your PC with a tuner card and decoding software and then you have free international TV?

I know one guy has about 6 or 7 different dishes pointing in different directions that has done this.

For free satellite channels, sure. But for getting pay TV for free - not trivial.

I'd still prefer only paying for 2 channels if I am only going to be watching 2.

OMG!!! Now we're pushing it!! I don't think you can find such a package anywhere in the world!! from DirectTV (USA's biggest paytv provider) To BskyB (UK's paytv leader.) Most Providers have a set basic package Just like Toptv!!!

Plus, if you've never seen DSTV before, it's clear that you're a muscle loving dude with no TV interest! Tough Luck!

I think ODM has done a great job sourcing all these channels and bringing such American channels for the first time to SA! Nevertheless, I'm getting worried on how they are going to cope if they make their promised launch date in three days time; their site www.toptv.co.za has a count down but still no indication on where would be clients can buy their decoders from. even if they announce they stores to buy from in the next two days, customers will still have to wait for their licensed installers to install the equipment.

Then their is the finalization for local content for their nice in house Channels like Top learn that they have to source local content for. At the moment, ODM has not commissioned any local programing so they'll have to buy programs from local productions firms. Not that I care for local content, one can easily get an over dose on that from the SABC but it would be great to see ODM do it right the firms time!

I Hope ODM is not cutting itself too thin and been overly ambitious about the set launch date!

What ever the out come, I'll the first subscriber to sign up for TopTV, my favorite package; BASIC + ENTERTAINMENT + DOCUMENTARIES = R199 Can't Wiat!!!;)

Some decent channels there...But very little sport other than psl. I'll stick to my live streaming and uncapped adsl. Looks good though if you have kids!

From the teeveetee blog.........

****"I can exclusively reveal first that the new TopTV decoders which I showed you RIGHT HERE first have been received by shops who will start to sell them from this Saturday.

Shops are under strict orders and super embargo's by On Digital Media (ODM) NOT to display the TopTV set top boxes (STB) before this Saturday, 1 May, which is the first date that they can go on sale. I can tell you that the TopTV STB will be sold by outlets like Checkers, Hi-Fi Corporation, Jet, Checkers etc. from Saturday.

What potential new satellite TV subscribers to TopTV needs to do is go to one of these shops selling a TopTV STB and buy one of the decoders. A subscriber then needs to call On Digital Media who will send a subscriber a list of three installers to choose from. A subscriber then choose an installer. The accredited installer - which the subscriber will not be paying at this point - goes out and does the standard installation. The accredited installer will supply a 90cm satellite TV dish, as well as a cable up to 20 metres. It's also the installer who will activate the service once the installation is completed."******

It has been posted all over and is available on their website!! Here is is again :

Look at BASIC

I dont think you are correct (or I hope you are not) when you say that the R99 offering is everything under Basic- those seem to be the categories that the channels are grouped under.
Top tv said the 99 offering will include a good mix from every category- there are no kiddies channels, but 5 news and 5 Christian channels....
