TopTV installation, decoder, dish pricing revealed

Wouldn't it be easier just to rather point your dish in a different direction (get the degrees somewhere) and plug it in your PC with a tuner card and decoding software and then you have free international TV?

I know one guy has about 6 or 7 different dishes pointing in different directions that has done this.

I see news is slow on MyBB - so why not re-hash old news so we can keep the advertisers happy....
I must have missed this announcement elsewhere - can you point me in the right direction to see where it has been published before (anywhere online will be good) ;)

I recommend this company for the installation. Their Website also shows the seperate bouqets that are on offer from ODM:

http://www.sats-r-us.co.za/odm.html

On another page they also specify that the entire setup will retail for R699 which includes the STB, dish, bracket, LNB, remote control, smartcard, cable, user manual and installation.

All you have to do is buy the STB at a retailer, call ODM who will give you a choice of three installers in your area, select one, and schedule the installation date & time.

I wonder what the chances are of them offering XMLTV or similar scheduling for MythTV etc.?

To pay or not to pay

Some people really do just love to whine...

Some people live and love to whine. Get a better paying job so you won't have to b1tch about R249pm.

The reason I am wealthy today is not because I pay because I can............

Well, I wish them the best of luck. Whilst I don't see us moving away from DStv immediately, hopefully there will be an impact on their revenues that will be hard enough to get them to change their tune w.r.t. what packages we can get.

Personally we could do with just MNET, SS1 and SkyNEWS.

At last. thank you, i will be supporting Toptv all the way until they launch a pvr and i will buy that too. im sick and tired of Monochoice, they can kiss my compact package money goodbye.

Is it at all possible for two networks to carry the same channel?

In otherwords, allowed to? Or does the first buy all right for that country?

Depends purely on what the parties agree on. The channel could include all rights as part of the deal or just the right to use the channel. Costs more for exclusivity. TopTV does have some of the same channels that are on DSTV, like BBC World...

I have decided that I am leaving DSTV and going to start with TOPTV; as the current pricing is brilliant especially since I am not a sports fanatic!

Yes...but many people seems to think otherwise.

This is how the channels make money...to sell them to the most networks they can.The channel and the network close what they call in the industry,a carriage deal. They're are paid per sub,and this is where it is harder for
toptv to get some onboard, they don't have numbers in subs yet.

It doesn't matter if dstv is a high end service, that means nothing for channel owners, only subs count.Once toptv start getting real numbers they'll be in a better position
for channels, however for premium content its the wallet that counts.

The channel names are pretty meaningless without knowing what the content is going to be. I mean, are they going to be screening series 1 of Grey's Anatomy and M*A*S*H re-runs or will be be getting current series?

Good point although I doubt they will be able to show more repeats than DSTV currently is.

Enough to keep me interested and entertained... I don't have a Telkom line therefore no ADSL therefore no uncapped... @R699 + subs VS spending >R1K DSTV + more tha R400 subs.

This sounds cheap enough just to try - in case this turns out to be a lemon in their early days.

i'm not so sure bout your link.
1) there are only 4 packages.. and TopTV said(stand to be corrected) that there are 7 different packages
2) the packages you refer to looks more like categories than packages

Lancelot's link is correct. There is a basic group and a further 3 additional groups to add.

The basic is R99 (mandatory), but then you can:
- add any of 1 of the other 3 = about R159?
- add any of 2 of the other 3 = about R200
- add all of the other 3 = R250

The various combos of those packages/channel groups make '7' different choices.

Just wondering why no package and installation details are available on their website. They say 4 days to launch - is that starting to broadcast or starting to take orders for installation? Would have thought they would have already started installations if they start broadcasting in a few days time.

Whats the benefit?

I've managed without DSTV quite fine for all these years.
Will it be beneficial for me to spend more time in front of the tv? I dont think so.
They dont even have an updated website. The last press release is from 2007. This does not bode well for a company that plans to launch in the next month.
I'll pass - and continue going to the gym in my spare time.
