Uncapped ADSL prices compared: Telkom versus other ISPs

HI MickeyD or anyone else please..

I am on some form of package DoBroadband 5 that has 4mb line, but only 20gb data cap. Do i have to unbundle this to get the unlimmited deal?

at the moment i pay around R1170 per month for my entire internet experience..telkom adsl line and voice for 6mb line and R539 for mweb uncapped.

if i take telkom 4mb deal, its 699+148 for voice = 847

thats a saving of R323!

incredible.

Am in the same situation and have the same products. If Mweb doesn't announce any savings by end of months I am giving them my 1 months notice and switching. R323 is a good amount

Just had a look on gconnect website not sure if this is correct or what????

1 Mbps + Free Wi-Fi 100Min

R 49.50

up to 1024 kbps uncapped.

how on earth do they offer this or am I reading something wrong?

Isn't the Vanilla heavily shaped or something? Maybe they want to compare similar products?

nope, not at all :) Did 450GB in Nov and speedtests were constant 10mbps during business hours. Going to get a second account next month to download all the Action Pack/SPLA software from Microsoft, should allow me to hit 1TB :D

Yes the Do Uncapped 4mbps option on the web still reflects a +R1100 total cost per month. So I will check in from time to time.

Pricing is updated.
http://www.do.co.za/broadband/offerings/telkom-internet-plans/uncapped/do-uncapped-up-to-4mbps/

4mbps package total pricing is now R847, including Phone Line + ADSL Line + 4Mbps uncapped. Don't ask about it on the Telkom Helpdesk though, they have no idea what the websites says.

Mweb is suddenly as expensive as they were before their whole uncapped shakeup. In all the years Mweb was always rather slow and behind, with a burst of activity every 5 years and then they slumber.

Jeez, those prices are good - @170 saving on the 4 meg line that is a real saving

So, lets see what Mweb does, they didn't jump for Afrihost or Openweb - wonder if they will stick to being the most expensive

I'm waiting to see what the do uncapped performance is like after 1feb. Might be worth moving from Mweb uncapped 2mb to telkom uncapped 4mb for an extra R100.
Or maybe change to telkom uncapped 2mb and save R150 a month.

If you apply for a bundled uncapped account they will do all the necessary amendments to convert your account. You must specify and stress this...

It would save me about R150 per month ...

This is probably a stupid question: I presume that Telkom would throttle at the connection, i.e. the line would still synch at 10Mb but actual download speeds would max out at 4Mb ?

Yep, pretty much. Since you are throttled at 4Mb the line would give a small speed boost compared to a actual 4Mb line (due to protocol overheads, etc...).

Pity ... since Telkom's ADSL service is a "4Mb best effort" it boils down to "we are doing too much 'best effort'" :)

Cancellation letter sent to MWEB this morning. Reason: Out of date pricing model.

I will give Telkom a chance but the guys I know who use Telkom say their service (as an ISP) is excellent.
+1

Want to jump the Mweb ship now but Telkom's website is not working. cant order the 2meg uncapped deal.

Thanks, the package is called CLOSER 5. Maybe antiquated. I will go with it for a month to see the effect of the new service.

LOL :) >>> "Celine: "I'm not saying you're stupid, I just think you have bad luck when it comes to thinking."!!

Marketing 101

I agree 100 percent. It speaks for itself that if the system changes February 2013, the system will reflect the current pricing model and limitations of January 2013. So that is what the Telkom lady read. Now how difficult is that? Besides there are credible sources to back up the claim that that the limitations will fall away in February. I am a very happy Openweb customer, otherwise I would have seriously considered this offer. I just feel unhappy for the Mweb guys. Naspers is taking them to to the cleaners.
I suppose you have never heard of pre-launch marketing ????? ( preparing the market )

You only get certainty on the product the day it is launched ?
Come on ...........

IF
This is the way Telkom marketing works then perhaps they ALL need to go back to school !

Weell
My 10GB cap ran out over the weekend
Can no longer connect to any of the Telkom Cacheing servers ( 196.43.9.21 , 196.25.255.3 )
Can only surf local

Using another Telkom account now for "blended" !

The Telkom Direct lady told me that topping up is R75.00 per GB <eina>

The link to the updated Do package details is also not working.
w.e.f. 1 February 2013. Did you miss that part?

Its amazing how so many people, especially the last few days make comments on articles without reading the damn things.

I am gonna have real problems staying with Mweb if they don't do something with their 4 Meg accounts. R200 saving per month is just so tempting.
