Do you want/need an APN that allows connections initiated from outside the APN?

@ic or whom ever. Are any of these APN's chargeable if so why?
At this stage they are not charged at a premium rate. However - as vodacom3g points out - they do require additional resources to implement and could thus be considered a premium service. There are no current changes occurring that would affect the price - but as v3g mentions - the idea has been throw around.

Hey v3g, thanks for the swift reply...

It doesnt seem like I am running any firewall, I have deactivated the SP2 one and tested the ports before installing zonealarm.

I had quite a strange occurence though... I tested port 6112(warcraft), it was closed. Then I added it to the list of ports in IIS and voila! it was open. WTF?

But I think it only opening incoming connections as running telnet to a friends computer (who had that port opened) didnt work.

I am in the Eastern Cape, Port Alfred.

Thanks man

I am seeing some really strange stuff on the unrestricted apn tonight

C:>nslookup www.vodacom.co.za
Server: dns1-cba.3g.vodacom.co.za
Address: 196.207.40.165:53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: www.vodacom.co.za
Address: 41.192.255.27

C:>ping www.vodacom.co.za

Pinging www.vodacom.co.za [203.66.138.31] with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.
Reply from 203.66.138.31: bytes=32 time=445ms TTL=103
Reply from 203.66.138.31: bytes=32 time=423ms TTL=103

I disconnected and tried the internet apn, no problems. It seems that all sites I try to access get reditected to 203.66.138.31. Flaky router or gateway perhaps?

I am on PPDB and I have been provisioned for unrestricted.

It does sound like you need to play a bit more with firewall settings on both systems.

Don't you want to send me a detailed mail with all of this and I'll forward, so the guys can test directly with you?

I have just tested it all again, while getting you the info together and everything seems back to normal. Shall I keep in in drafts for now and see how it goes?

Aarrrg, apologies a false alarm it would seem.

My AP which is not supposed to be my default gateway, messed up my routing. I did some digging on the IP and found this:

Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.

Netname: GIGABYTE-TECHNOL-201-TW
Netblock: 203.66.138.24/29

Seeing as my AP is a Gigabyte it would seem that it was the culprit. They must have some default internal route which for some obscure reason uses a valid IP from their netblock.

So once again, apologies :)

Thanks

Thank you v3g for that incredibly enlightening reply.

I deactivated every process one by one until I had only the ones I needed. I shut-down every service that could block my access. I uninstalled zone-alarm. Should I still "play around with my firewall"? Unless im mistaken, I dont have a firewall anymore.

And I dont have two systems, I only have one. Does IIS count as a firewall? You tell me... You're the pro.

Thanks again for helping out.

VPN/Remote Desktop "into" 3G Linksys Router

Hi Everybody!

Heres my setup:

PTA Office, Small network with 2003 Server, and linksys 3g router. (Asked Vodacom to put me on the Unrestricted APN, Forwarded ports on the router to my server 2003 ip)

Went to www.canyouseeme.org, to check wether my ports are visible and they are...HOWEVER, they are not only visible on the server, but on any pc behind the linksys rouer. I thought this wouldnt be the case?

I can currently connect from behind the linksys router to other VPN servers, but connecting from ADSL clients onto my 2003 Server behind the Linksys router, doesnt seem to work.

Am i doing something wrong?
Please assist?
ANY help greatly appreciated.

You say you have asked Vodacom to put you on the unrestricted APN. Did you sign and send them the disclaimer form? Secondly have you changed the setup on the router to use the unrestricted APN? What IP address is dyndns getting from your router?

What are the charges for using the different APN's?

Have asked this question before but have not had an answer yet.

What are the charges for using the different APN's, if there is any.

Did this not answer that (2 pages back):

In other words - all APN's are charged at the same rate. And that would be whatever rate relates to the package/contract/bundle that you are on.

@ic, @ambo. That is why I asked.

Coz I had been charged a while ago for using the unrestricted APN on certain sites, so called unrestricted sites. I asked which sites and they could not tell me. I then wanted to get a detailed account & VC was going to charge me for it @ R 10 & I kindkly said no ways, which landed me in hot water on the Forum.

So then why was I charged?

Ummm, you seem to be confused about the purpose of the unrestricted APN, unrestricted does not mean that your data usage is free, the unrestricted APN allows unrestricted incoming connections to be established from outside of Vodacom's network.

Now, I am confused! Please explain your comment? I was not worried about the data usage but I had a couple of Rand in my prepaid account and they actually took some of the rands & cents. The usage wasn't taken off the data bundle.

I agree with ic on this, lot's of confusing info. You don't get charged for using an apn, only the data.

What are you doing with the unrestricted apn? Are you hosting a service?

What is a so-called 'unrestricted site'?

Exactly my question, to the call centre lady. Why did VC deduct money from the credit I have in my prepaid account & not from my prepaid data bundle. I was told it was because I had used the unrestricted APN to some site's. She really wasn't sure of herself & even asked her supervisor & she confirmed that coz I used the unrestricted APN etc. I had to pay from my credit. They eventually creditted my prepaid account. That is why I got peeved when I tried to get a detailed account & the system said I should pay R10 just coz the call centre people had no idea what they were doing. And v3g went up in arms coz I am always complaining & want everything for free ???

Unrestricted VC APN

Hi there

I don’t know whether this has been discussed yet, but it seems that Vodacom restricts the use of certain ports where a subscriber must fill in an indemnity form - and faxed back with copy of ID - before they can use the Unrestricted APN (attached).

The feedback we have received is from an online poker player which says this is a new occurrence. Was this discussed before?

Any feedback will be great.

Regards,

RPM
