Do you want/need an APN that allows connections initiated from outside the APN?

Was using unrestricted APN in JHB, flew down to DBN and it connects but cant get anywhere?

Took me a while to figure out why street searches on my E71's GPS were coming back with "Not found". Switched to internet APN and all is fine.

V3G any idea ?

The APN's are regional, so something's different/broken in Durbs. Will escalate, tx!

I see this thread is rather old, so really hope I'll get a reply...

I have two modems that I would like to connect together in a peer to peer type relationship, using GPRS.

I have figured out how to connect a modem to a webserver, etc, but can't connect one modem to another.

From this posting it seems that it is not possible, unless there is some special arrangement from Vodacom for the unrestricted access...

Just some questions:

1) Does this mean a new simcard, or do they "unblock" my existing sims?
2) Can a prepaid card be unrestricted.
3) and, finally, where can I get this form from? I can only imagine trying to call VC's normal help desk for that....

Thank you for a great post, it did clear up this connection error for me....

Regards,

John

1) No any Vodacom SIM will work
2) Yes
3) You can call 155 or download it here: http://www.vodacom.co.za/services/unrestricted_apn/unrestricted_apn.jsp

Unrestricted APN on Vodacom 3G

Was wondering if anyone (perhaps Mr. Voda3G?) can give me some advice on how to open up an unrestricted APN on my one number.

I (eventually) got an XBOX Live subscription last night and the lag was terrible. Read that one of the solutions was to open up an unrestricted APN. Also, I read there's some disclaimer form to be filled out? If I open up the APN, will I still be able to use the (safer) "internet" APN for normal browsing and just use the "unrestricted" for when I connect to Live?

EDIT: For anyone who has connected to Live with an unrestricted APN on Vodacom: Does it really make a difference?

That's correct, there's information on Vodacom's website here, and you can download the form by clicking on the 'How do I get it?' link on that page.

You can switch between APNs, but can only connect to one at a time.

Before you go with the unrestricted APN, first make sure it is not just the network that is overcrowded.

I tried playing WoW last night and had pings between 1500ms and 3000ms.

There are times, now and then, that I get 350ms to 500ms, so at the moment the network is buggered. (or it is just me, even though nothing has changed my side)

An urestricted APN will give you an open nat in xbox live which will improve your gameplay and voice chat t a certain degree. If you join an international multiplayer match you will still have lag that will severly influence your gameplay but local games (within SA) will be playable.

Make sure you have a secondary firewall in place and that it is updated before you attempt to use the "unrestricted APN"

Yeah, I read your (quite long) post on the XBox-360 forums. ;) What firewall do you recommend? Also, is it really necessary to have a secondary firewall if I use the unrestricted APN only when I'm on Live, but use the normal internet APN when browsing / emailing / etc?

Vodacom removed NAT on the internet APN a while ago. They do still block unsolicited inbound connections. I doubt that you will see a speed difference. Latency will always be high and unpredictable on wireless technology.

It will be fine as long as it is up to date and as long as it's not the windows firewall.

I use zonealarm security suite as my anti virus and firewall as well as nod32 antivirus.

I do the exact same thing as what youre planning to do and i only use "unrestricted APN" when on live.

As morks indicated, the only thing the unrestricted APN will give you is open incoming ports. Is this required to play games? Gut feel would say no, but it's not impossible.

You will not see any performance improvement though and you'll just open yourself up for attacks.

Oh well, I'll give it a shot anyways. Last night I tried playing with 2 buddies of mine (both with unrestricted APNs) and they had no trouble at all joining in on games. I, on the other hand, struggled to death to get any games working. My HSDPA signal strength is FULL the whole time and I'm quite close to a tower or two (hey, I can almost see Vodaworld from my bedroom window!). Like I indicated, I will only be using the internet APN when browsing and checking mails - I actually have 2 SIM cards I use: one dedicated to online gaming and one for browsing / email. I'm only opening up the unrestricted APN on the "gaming" SIM card.

Is it worth paying the extra R50 a month to get the 3.6mbps connections viz a viz the 1.8mbps? I have a Huawei e220 external USB modem and read up that they support up to 3.6mbps download and 384kbps upload. Is this correct? Will TRUE download and upload speeds of that nature be near attainable with the extra R50 p/m on top of my monthly subscription?

Sorry for all the questions and uncertainty - I just need to get this sorted out.

If you consistently get 1.8-1.9Mbps on the normal HSDPA service then you may benefit from the 3.6 service. If you get less than that, your tower doesn't have the capacity, so the 3.6 service won't benefit you.

Bear in mind that the E220 is not HSUPA capable, so you won't be able to take advantage of the other benefit of the 3.6 service which is being able to upload at 1.2MBps.

My connection is usually in the region of 1.6 - 1.8mpbs, so the upgrade might be worth it then? I know the E220 isn't HSUPA, so yes, the 1.2mbps upload will be unattainable for now. :(

An update though - I opened up my unrestricted APN yesterday and quickly ran a test with Call of Duty this morning. I could connect effortlessly to ANY available game with minimal lag. I could even score a few kills along the way! I will test it again tonight round about the same time as I tried gaming with my buddies earlier this week. I'll also phone for the 3.6mbps upgrade today and see if it makes a difference tonight. Just a few final questions: If I DO activate the 3.6mbps, is it possible to deactivate it again if I see no notable difference? Also, how long does it take to activate? I read you just phone 155 to activate this service, is this also correct?

Thanks for all the info people!

It sounds then as if there is a component of unsolicited inbound connections when it comes to gaming.

You can deactivate 3.6, but you will still pay for the one month. Not sure how long it takes to activate, but best to use speed.vodacom.co.za to test it. 155 should sort you out, you can also activate it from vodacom4me.co.za.

You can also activate the 3.6 service through the *111# USSD menu, IIRC activation was practically instant.

If you use MDMA you will see your 'assigned profile' values change the next time you connect.

There used to be a one month free trial of the 3.6 service, but Vodacom did away with it , now you'll have to pay for the first month to see if it's worth it. If you cancel the service it will take effect at the end of the month.

Cool! Thank you very much for the help. I'll try it a bit later (just need to swap SIM-cards on my phone to do the *111# thingy). Will let you all know over the weekend (or next week) what my findings are with regards to XBOX Live.

Leave your SIM Cards where they are and [post=756106]download MDMA[/post] - you can thank ginggs for changing the life of your E220 once you've tried MDMA with your E220.

OK, downloaded and it's pretty cool. Used the USSD interface but got the response for 3G 3.6 to contact the service provider to enable it... So I gotta phone Vodacom now? 155?

EDIT: Done via Vodacom4me.co.za... Does it really take 24 hours to activate? Sheesh...
